Should bearded irises be mulched for the winter?

There very winter hardy plants indeed I do mulch mine with mowed over leaves though out the year here in Zone 6 I have a very shady spot where I store my extras these ones don't flower at all from the lack of sun but they still grow and they don't get any winterizing in that area.

I have iris and do not mulch them. Their bulbs show a little above the ground as is natural and I've never lost any from exposure to our zone through the winter and had a lot to transplant this year.
