Balloon Fruit Bowl Centerpiece

This is a picture of a balloon "fruit bowl" centerpiece I made for a 50th birthday party. Everyone thought it was so cute!

It's very easy to do. I used a pack of mixed balloons, and used a round orange one, a round red one (tie on a piece of ribbon for the apple leaf), an oblong yellow for a pear.

Then, I added some of those long animal twisty balloons. You can buy them individually at most party stores. You'll probably have to blow them up with a hand pump, though.

For the bananas, blow up a yellow one about half way, and twist it in half. Tie the nozzle to the nipple. This makes two bananas. Do it again for a "bunch" of four bananas.

For the grapes, use a purple or green balloon, and blow it up halfway. Start twisting one inch bubbles, one after another, till you use up all the balloon. Bring the last bubble back and twist it around the first. Voila. Grapes.

Or, do it in red and it will look like cherries.

Put all your balloon fruit in a clear glass bowl, and wait for the laughter.

Today's Tips

Planning Your Garden

Take time to plan your garden, on paper, to make the most of what space you have available. Keep track of the brands and varieties you use, that you might like to plant again, next year. Make notes on what kinds didn't work as well as you'd have liked, so you don't make the same mistake another time.

Address Labels and Stamps

I carry stamps and address labels in my car's glove box. You never know when you might need them. One of our local stores charges extra for postage stamps. They're high enough already!

Cheeses with Less Fat

If you're not choosy about what cheeses you have on your sandwich, salad, etc. White cheeses have less fat in them than yellow cheeses. I was told this by a nurse.

Get Rid of Monthly Storage Fees

If you have things in a storage unit, get into it, keep what you want. But sell or give the rest to the needy. Get out of paying those monthly storage fees! That's money wasted, that you could have invested or went on vacation with.

By Terri

Storing Crochet Patterns

I always store my crochet patterns in a binder and I put them in sheet protectors. That way they don't get dirty at all and it helps me keep them organized.

Keeping Carrots, Celery and Radishes Fresh

My grandma grew up on a farm and always kept her cleaned and sliced carrot sticks, celery sticks, and radishes submerged in water in closed containers in her refrigerator. This has worked great for me and will keep these items crisp and fresh for about 2 weeks.

Saving Money on Utilites

Tips for saving money on utilities. Post your ideas.

Keeping Power Bills Down

To keep your power bill down, use your electric clothes dryer as little as possible. Either hang your clothes outside, or hang your clothes on hangers in your shower to drip dry or get a clothes rack (this can be set up both, outdoors or indoors). I hang most of our clothes and let drip dry in the shower. Also, I use the nails I put up on our deck to use for hanging Christmas lights to hang clothes on hangers to dry in the light summer breeze. We sure can tell a difference in our power bill if I forget and toss a few loads of wash in the dryer!

Sock Bottle Dog Toy

My dog loves to chew on empty 20-ounce pop bottles, so I made an inexpensive variation of that. Take a 20-ounce pop bottle, drop a couple of dried beans inside, and put the cap on tightly. Slip the bottle inside an old tube sock and tie a knot in the top of the sock. My dog loves to chew on these and toss them around.

Denim Dog Toy

I had some leftover denim from shortening a pair of jeans, so I stitched up two pieces which made a tube about 3-inches by 6-inches. I stuffed this tube with some craft stuffing I already had and stitched the last side closed. My dog had a good time chewing on this and shaking it around in her teeth. Plus, the denim was so durable, it took a while before she was able to puncture the denim.

Cleaning Dishes and Wooden Cutting Boards

When visiting my elderly father recently I noticed that his dishes, glasses and everything in his kitchen were covered with a grimy film. He explained that to save money he was cutting his dishwashing liquid with water (1/4 soap and 3/4 wanter) and using much less than the recommended amount dishwasher detergent. I say this waste of money, because there is no savings if you become ill from the germs accumulating in a dirty kitchen! You don't have to use a huge amount of soap, but please use full it strength to kill germs!

Also he uses a wooden cutting board for everything and rather than cleaning it with soap, he uses only wanter and then oils it. This is an old-fashioned and dangerous practice. Germs get in to the wood. Oil becomes rancid when out in the air. Best to use a non-porous plastic or glass cutting surface and clean it with soap and vinegar after each use. Food poisoning is more than unpleasant -- it can often be life threatening! Why take risks?

Dry Cleaner Clothing Sales

Lots of dry cleaners will have a sale a couple times a year to sell off clothing that has never been picked up. It can be a good place to find some nice things and many times they are only sold for what it cost to clean the item.

Get An Energy Audit

If you're paying more for utilities than you think you should, maybe a home energy audit is what you need. It can identify ways to save hundreds of dollars a year on heating and cooling. Ask your local utility company if they can do one for free or for little cost to you, if not see if they can refer someone who can.

Energy Piggy Bank

I got tired of finding unneeded lights on so we developed a penalty piggy bank for offenders in the family. Every time someone leaves a light on (that they no longer need,) and another family member notices, they have to put a nickel in the piggy bank (I have young children, you could use a dime, a quarter or whatever penalty you want.)

For the littlest member of the family, I gave him permission to turn off the light switches if they are on and no one is using them. Through this, we have increased the energy awareness in our household and I find far fewer lights left on. Because they have to pay it from their allowance, they seem to get the point a lot quicker.

Carry address labels in your wallet/purse to use for sweepstakes entries you might encounter during shopping. Do everyone you can, you never know. You can't win, if you don't enter. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Compost

Reducing, reusing, recycling and composting saves energy, landfill space, and natural resources. These measures also keep our air cleaner because they help reduce pollution, when compared to manufacturing with raw, virgin materials. Compost when possible. Personal Advice About a Parent with Alzheimers

Onset of Alzheimers in elderly parents is not easily recognized. Personally I feel that depression is one of the first noticible signs, often brought on by death of a loved one (In my Mothers case she lost a husband and 9 year old grandson within 40 days of each other.) She chose to move to a small apartment to make a new start but the change seemed to sink her into deeper depression. If I could change anything I'd have tried to keep her in her own familiar environment.

Lack of mental challenge seems to contribute to its onset. Encourage elderly to read or to sew or quilt or bring them puzzles, anything they have an interest in to keep their mind challanged. The hardest thing I found, as did many of our family is recognizing that the remarks they make or the strange things they may do are not typical of the parent that we are used to.

Don't take things personally. They really have no control over the personality changes they are going through. You MUST keep this in the back of your mind. Hopefully someday there will be help for those elderly suffering from this disease. I hope this article will offer some helpful advice to others who may be living through this and maybe my experience can benefit someone else.

Clean Games for Adult and Teen Parties

What's In The Bag?

Fill a brown paper bag with SILLY clothes, glasses, hats, etc. and pass it around a circle to music as you would musical chairs. The one stuck with the bag, takes something out and has to put it on. Gets a lot of laughs!

Gift Take Away

Another fun game is to have 4 wrapped gifts. Each person writes their name on 4 scrap pieces of paper and you draw names. When all 4 are claimed it becomes a TAKE AWAY. EX: I want Jane Doe's gift. The last 4 drawn gets to keep theirs.

Guess The Definition

One last fun game is to use the dictionary. Divide into teams of 3. Find a definition of a word not commonly used. 2 of the team makes up a false definition and the 3rd tells the correct one. Others guess who gave the correct definition. Example: tintinabulation (the tinkling sound of bells pealing). This sort of quietens down things but is a lot of fun.

Using a Spin Dryer

Besides using the "solar dryer" (clothesline) you can get a spin dryer. They spin at 3000 RPM to wring as much as an additional liter out of your clothes.

I have twins and use cloth diapers. Air drying makes them scratchy and stiff. Plus, in the winter it often rains several days in a row.

Use a Trusted Camera When Travelling

NEVER buy a new camera when you plan to take pictures you will not be able to replace. Last year we bought a new camera for my Daughter to take on her senior trip to Washington DC. She didn't clearly understand how to use it and ended up ruining her pictures of Arlington Cemetary, etc. ALL the important things she wanted to keep photos of. She also took along a couple of $5 disposable ones and did manage to get ones of friends. Fortunately friends loaned her negatives of things they had and we paid out the NOSE having them copied.

50th Anniversary Advice

My parents will be celebrating their 50th anniversary on 7/2/2005. I am planning on having a 2pm-5pm "event", with finger foods, cake, and punch. Cat Smell Coming From Under Mobile Home

I need some serious help here. We are planning on selling our house but we have a huge problem. About 3 weeks ago this god awful smell came through the whole house. We thought maybe a mouse had died in our registers or something like that, so a couple days later we had someone come in and clean our registers and put a spray into all of them to get rid of the smell. Well guess what, that didn't help.

So days go by and we couldn't figure out what the smell was or what had caused it. We live in a mobile home so my husband went under the house and all in the insulation there was cat feces and it wreaked of urine. So we bought cat spray's and sprayed it all under the house... the smell still came in. Someone suggested bleach, well that worked for a bit because your nose was so immune to the bleach you couldn't smell anything else and the smell is still here.

My husband sprayed it on the wood under the house and replaced all the insulation that was wrecked but the smell still returns. I've bought some of those battery operated fan smelly things and put them in the registers... THE SMELL IS STILL HERE.

I need some major help ,it wreaks in our house but it's coming from under the house and in through the vents, what do we do? I need another solution that's going to work, we are going to be selling our house and I don't think people will want to buy it with this awful smell. What next?

Alternatives to Pesticides
By Susan Sanders-Kinzel

Instant solutions to pest problems can be harmful to the environment, pets, wild birds, fish (when the run off goes downstream) and beneficial insects (ladybugs, honey bees). Pesticides are poisons, they can kill or harm more than just insects. Using pesticides are like taking prescription drugs. Sometimes the benefits must be weighed against the side effects. Using pesticides also is responsible for developing genetically resistant insect species.
