Dog Odors Might Be a Symptom of a Medical Problem

I just wanted to let everyone know that my "stinky dog"ended up having a skin infection from swimming in her doggy pool and being matted in her hind quarters. Her skin is "stained" with either a fungus or bacterium (I am taking her to the vet tomorrow since we just got back from the groomer today).

So your stinky dog may not be that way because of his food, or because he needs a bath! Investigate the smell. Look all over his body. Use your nose and find out exactly where it's coming from before you decide it's nothing. My pup may have to be on antibiotics because I didn't notice it sooner (although she has smelled for over a month now).

Asia (Pitbull) and Lucky (Cat)

We got Asia from a friend she is 15 months old and a pitbull. Lucky was found in a cold air duct about 2 weeks of age. I had to bottle feed him, there were 3 of them and he was the only one that lived.

They like to run and play. Asia thinks all the kittens are her babies.

Nova (Pekingese/ShihTzu)

This is Nova, she is 6 months old. She is a Shinese (Pekingnese ShihTzu). We adopted Nova from the Humane Society. She was born in a vet's care after her mother (and many other dogs) was rescued from a puppy mill. We stood in line at 5:30 in the morning to get the option to adopt her.

Nova enjoys playing with her squeaky toys, as well as shoes and any bits of paper she can yank out of a nearby garbage bin. She plays with our older dog, Mally, and holds her own in every competition. Nova has a princess attitude about her, thinking she can take what she wants and those cushions are specifically designed to be used as her own personal perch.

Today's Tips:

Make a Trivia Christmas Jar

Around Christmas I make my sisters something like a memory jar. Instead of memories with them, I put in inside jokes, movie lines, pictures, random facts, and drawings on little pieces of paper with colorful backgrounds. Then I decorate the jar.

Movie quotes, random facts, and cute or funny pictures were mostly found online. You can use Snapple caps or fortune cookie fortunes, anything. Just an idea for a little something extra along with their real Christmas presents. They like the jars better than jewelry or clothes. It is more personal and shows that you put a little thought into the gift. :)

Homemade Dishwasher Detergent

I never buy dishwasher soap anymore. I buy a large box of 20 mule team borax, a large baking soda, and a large bottle of white vinegar. I keep them on hand just for dishwasher soap.

I mix 2 cups of borax, 1 cup of baking soda together and keep in a large jar. I add this to the dishwasher dispenser as usual. Then I add white vinegar to the rinse dispenser.

It lasts quite a long time and is certainly much cheaper than buying it at the store all the time and I almost never run out.

Spray Cooking Oil for Removing Sap on Dog Paws

I have used butter in the past, but decided to try spray cooking oil. It is less of a mess. Just spray on the paws and wipe off with a paper towel. Not only less mess but less licking :)

Create a Wedding Bouquet from Your Love Notes

Confused by all of the choices there are for a bridal bouquet? I have tried hard to make each wedding I ever designed (34 years designing) special and unique to each bride.

If you are not sure what type of bouquet to carry or trying to save some on cost, take all of the cards and love letters and notes that you saved from your groom and tie them together. Have some one make a fabric "envelope" to match your colors. Slide in all of the cards and letters, use a button to close it off. Have the florist make a larger "corsage" with trailing ribbons and attach it to the top of the "envelope" with corsage pins. This will truly give you a bouquet unique to you alone as no one else has the cards and love notes as you do from your beloved.

This is sentimental and very elegant, all the while being very cost effective as well! Say nothing to your groom until you are at the altar or after the ceremony. Tell him that you carried these items with you as they mean more than any bridal bouquet ever would AND you get to keep them as well, secure in their special "envelope"! You may even choose to have the envelope embroidered with your names, initials, a sentiment, your wedding date etc.

Best of luck on your wedding day.

Source: It was my idea, you have to be creative when dealing with brides that all want a wedding unique to themselves.

Know Where Your Water Shut Off Valves Are Located

Now that we are doing more of our own home improvement, everyone should be aware that there are cut off valves easily accessible to cut off the water source until the repair is done, or in case of an emergency leak. They are located under the sink or bathroom commode, It pays to know ahead of time where they are located in order to avoid confusion and water damage.

Egg White To Draw Out Boils

A way to treat and draw out boils. crack an egg, take the egg white and put it on the boil. Put a bandage on it and leave overnight. When you wake up, you will see a big change. Do this as often as you like until the boil has gotten the core out. Thanks. Good luck!

Sharpen Your Scissors With Aluminum Foil

Scissors will not be sharp after many times of usage. To make it sharp again, you can get a sheet of tinfoil, fold it until you have 5-6 layers. Use scissors to cut the tinfoil to small stripes, repeat the cutting for ten to fifteen times.

Test the scissors buy cutting a piece of paper to see the sharpness, if still not up to your satisfaction, repeat the steps by cutting more tinfoil until the scissors are really sharp.

Keeping Gel Pills From Getting Sticky In Hot Weather

I found a simple way to keep my pills from sticking together in my weekly pill holder. I have 3 or 4 gel caps and, in this hotter weather, they stick together or to the container. I have to dig them out. I found if I just put a pinch of cornstarch in with them, they don't stick together for about a year.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

Right outside her front door, Joe's mother had a thermometer that never seemed to tell the correct temperature. One chilly day, we all noticed that the thermometer, which was in direct sunlight, read a balmy 72 degrees.

"Mom," Joe's wife suggested without thinking, "you should stick that thing where the sun doesn't shine."

Difficulty Styling Hair

I have always wore my hair the same style. It is really frizzy and coarse and always has been even when I was young before ever using any styling aids. The back is long and naturally curly and I let it air dry. But the top I have always blown dry and used a curling iron. I don't part it just wear it curled back and with bangs curled forward.

Over the last year I have noticed more gray (even though I am only 38), but the real problem is over the last few months it has decided to part no matter what I do to try and make it not. Any suggestions on what to do? Thanks.

Nothing Is Working To Get Rid Of The Fleas

I have 5 dogs in my house as well as 5 children. I have a flea problem. My question is: how to I kill the fleas, eggs, whatever that are on all the piles of clothes in my kids room. They leave all their clothes on the floor and I'm sure they are loaded with fleas, because they are everywhere else. Also what do I do with their stuffed animals?

I am about to go crazy. I have a very large house also (3600 sq. ft. 2 floors) so bombing and spraying is very expensive, and I'm not sure it is working. At the moment, I am sitting with a towel on my head with Dawn detergent rubbed into my head and hair. Please help.

Fall Is Apple Season
By Debra Frick

When I think of fall, my mind goes to new pencils and pumpkins and, of course, apples. If you are lucky enough to have an orchard near you, this is the time of year to go and get yourself a bushel of apples. You will need to set aside a weekend and gather some good friends but it will be well worth the work and effort that you put into your apples. In this article, I am going to give you directions for making applesauce and some other goodies. But first let's talk about apples.
