Distress with paint or distress texture wise? If you want the texture, get some chain from the hardware store and take the table outside and hit it with the chain. Use a hammer, nails in an old pillowcase or towel - and just take out your aggressions. You may need to lightly sand down any spots that splinter, but you will get good texture.

If you want to distress with paint, you should paint it, then go over the paint with a watered down stain, wipe that off, then sand the raised areas, edges, etc... to make it look old.

Good luck!
