Use a coat of Kilz as a primer, then paint any color you like. If using a bright or deep color, have the Kilz tinted to a close color.

Is that faux walnut finish like a plastic type of contact paper? My mom's (l980-ish) kitchen had that. I would think that the Krylon plastic paint would do a nice job. Take your cabinet doors off and spray outside to keep the fumes down. I have used the Krylon paint on outdoor furniture and it has withstood two summers and is still looking good, so surely it would withstand use in a kitchen. Or, maybe a light sanding and a really good primer and enamel paint would do the job. I am always willing to take a chance on projects because usually even if it turns out not exactly like I planned, it is still better than what I started with! Good luck on your project and make sure you take before and after pictures to share with us.

Check your local hardware store for advice, Kathy. (People who work there are usually most helpful.) It may involve not only cleaning the cabinets thoroughly, but also sanding them a bit before applying paint.

Good luck!
