Buttercup (Pekingese) Our Precious Pup!

Hi! This is Buttercup, our new pekingese puppy. She is 4 months old in this picture. She enjoys getting in trouble any chance she gets! Her face is so cute, that we have a hard time staying mad at her!She makes our heart melt everytime she looks up at us with those big bulgy eyes. She is also adored by my 8 yr. old son, Jacob, who named her Buttercup, because he said her soft fur is the color of butter!

Today's Tips

Removing a Bandage

You can reduce the pain of removing an adhesive bandage by applying baby oil to the adhesive portion of the bandage. Let the baby oil soak for 5 to 10 minutes before trying to remove. It will be easier to remove and much less painful.

Honey Oatmeal Facial

Put 1/2 cup oats and 1/2 cup honey in a blender and mix until it becomes a paste. To use, massage 2 tablespoons of the mixture on your face. Let the mixture sit on your face for a few minutes, then rinse well. It helps remove dead skin and leaves your face feeling refreshed and clean. Store in a jar with a tight lid and refrigerate. Microwave for 10 seconds before using the refrigerated mixture.

Shopping Joke

The husband was browsing in a souvenir shop when another man next to him struck up a conversation.

Just as the man was telling him that his wife was getting carried away with her shopping, a brief power shortage caused the lights to flicker overhead. "Ah, " he sighed, "that must be her checking out at the register."

Draining Juice from Cans

When opening a can of ANYTHING with juice in it (such as tuna or vegetables), only open 1/3 of can with can opener and grip the handle firmly, then tip over can above sink to drain the juice. Then finish opening the can- with no spills! (Only works with a manual can opener!)

Home Prepared Meals

Don't waste money on prepared foods. Instead, prepare meals ahead of time and freeze them, or double a recipe when cooking, and freeze the second for a hectic day coming up.

Removing Splinters

When you get a splinter, reach for the scotch tape before resorting to tweezers or a needle. Simply put the scotch tape over the splinter, then pull it off. Scotch tape removes most splinters painlessly and easily

Tips for Dealing With Icy Steps

Ideas for dealing with icy steps. Post your ideas.

Dawn

For icy door steps in freezing temperatures: get warm water and put Dawn dishwashing liquid in it. Pour it all over the steps. They won't refreeze. (wish I had known this for the last 10 years!)

Storing Onions In Pantyhose

To store onions, use an old clean pair of pantyhose, cut the legs at the top and drop your onion in the leg. This can be stored and onions will stay fresh for 10-12 weeks. It works great with Valdailias

By Leslie Griner

Editor's Note: We've also heard that if you tie between each onion you can just cut off one when you want to use it and if one goes bad, it won't spoil the others.

Planter Bedroom Wastebasket

Last weekend, when we purchased a new-to-us oak bedroom suite, I thought it would be a great idea to get a new wastebasket that also would look as great in the room as the new furniture. NOT... There are no wastebaskets to be found in our town that are an oak finish.

I found green, blue, red, pink, white, light brown wicker, dark brown wicker, tin, etc. But not anything that would blend in and complement the new oak furniture until... I walked through the garden center and found a clay pot that is glazed on the inside and took it home to find that it looks great beside my new dresser.

I will now make a liner for it, with an elastic top to fit over the rim of the pot (some of the wicker basket sets in the stores have those liners, just not with elastic, usually a tie instead). Now... on to the laundry basket.

Buying Out of Season Can Save BIG

I know it is only March, but I am finding HUGE sales on sweaters, since stores want to get in the spring fashion. For those friends or family members I know I will be getting a fall/winter/Christmas/Birthday gift for - I have bought a number of very expensive sweaters for just a few dollars each. I also do this in the fall for picking up spring/summer gifts. Just don't forget to put a tag on them and remember where you hide them.

Food TV Currently On "Economical" Kick

For some reason this month FoodTV is doing a lot of recipes that are economical. Even if you don't have cable, go to Foodtv.com. One recipe I tried and was excellent was Osso Bucco Stoup (thick, but not too thick). I figured it costs about $6.00 for approximately 10 adult servings. It can be found in the show "30 Minute Meals". I know it aired at least on 2/26/05, but other times too, I'm sure. If you don't find it, I'm happy to submit it.

Salt-and-Pepper Shrimp

Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients:

  • 2 Tbsp. Salt
  • 1 lb. Large shrimp-peeled and deveined
  • 2 tsp. Coarse, sea or kosher salt
  • 1 tsp. crushed or ground peppercorns
  • 1 tsp. Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. Finely chopped garlic
  • 2 tsp. Minced peeled fresh ginger
  • 2 Tbsp. Finely chopped scallions
  • 2 cups oil; for deep frying

Directions:

In a small bowl, combine the coarse salt, peppercorns, and sugar and set aside. In another small bowl, combine the garlic, ginger, scallions and the chopped chilies. Heat a wok or deep skillet until it is hot and add the oil. When the oil is very hot and smoking, add the shrimp and deep-fry for about 1 minute or until they are pink. Remove them immediately with a slotted spoon and drain well. Pour off all but 1 1/2 tablespoons of the oil and reheat the wok. Add the salt-peppercorns-sugar mixture and stir-fry for 10 seconds. Add the garlic-ginger-scallion mixture and stir-fry for 10 seconds. Return the shrimp to the wok and stir-fry over high heat for about 2 minutes until the spices have thoroughly coated the outer shell of the shrimp. Transfer the shrimp to a serving platter and serve at once.

Oven Rack Height When Baking

After all these years I wondered if I am bakig my cookies on the right oven height. I have been using the 2nd notch from the bottom and today tried the 1st notch on the bottom. I know some recipes call for using the middle rack. I never have known if the top notch was for broiling or if the 2nd from the top was for broiling. Anyone know?

Frugal Tips For a Convenience Food Addict

My fiancee is the pickiest eater ever! He really only likes convenience foods which are costing me a small fortune! He likes chips and dip, frozen waffles, pizza and french fries. He won't eat any vegetables, except potatoes or un-cooked celery and carrots. I want to make good, healthy, inexpensive food for us in our tiny dorm room "kitchenette" but his picky-ness is ruining everything! This week alone I made him 4 boxes of mac n cheese, because he won't eat anything else! Do y'all have some frugal tips to please a picky eater, that don't contain lots of veggies (which i dearly love) thanks in advance!

Wealth of Wisdom
By Steve Goodier

One man said, "I had a brain scan and was told not worry --there was nothing there!" Which is all right because some of my best ideas over the years have come from others, anyway. And I have discovered that wisdom can be found in most any place and from most any person -- even the youngest of us.

How to Get Rid of Pesky High Interest Student Loans
By Jona E. Kessans & Terry Rigg

Currently student loans are at an all time low interest rate, which is a great deal for those currently attending college. But, if you're like me and attended college in the nineties or in the eighties then you know that there was no such thing as a low interest rate. The best you could hope for was around 8.25% and usually 9 or 10%.

The Art of Asking
By Jeffrey Strain

One of the most potent saving tools you possess as a consumer is the ability to ask. This ability can easily save you thousands of dollars a year, yet the majority of people fail to use it. Most of us are used to walking into an establishment and handing over the amount of money indicated for the item or service we want to purchase. Some may spend hours researching the best deal by going through sale advertisements, comparing prices and doing other research, but few will try to change the price once they walk into the establishment itself. This is not so for those who are trained in the art of asking.
