Craft: Memory Bank

I lost my dad awhile back. I like to have reminders of him throughout our home. I made this memory bank, I used a bread crumb can. I hot glued the picture to the can, on the other side is a picture of me and him. I had to glue the cover on so my kids won't take my change. I wanted to paint the cover blue, but thought of it after I had already glued it on.

Add Decorations to Sliding Glass Doors for Safety

Add a decoration to sliding doors so you are aware the door is closed and not open.

I have heard of people walking through the glass because they think the door is open and it's really closed. In my patio. I have hung a little bird nest wreath with a suction cup hanger to remind people the door is closed. Do not walk into the glass.

Peanut (Dachshund/Chihuahua)

Peanut, also known as Mr. Peanut, is 11 years young and a Dachshund/Chihuahua mix. I adopted Peanut one year ago from the St Louis Senior Dog Project (www.stlseniordogproject.typepad.com).

Peanut likes to sleep, chase squirrels with his adopted brother (a year old Chihuahua/Poodle mix named Charlie).

I am so proud of the amazing progress Peanut has made in just a year, from a shy shivering heap to a sweet "puppy like" lap dog. He has inspired me to help other senior dogs get the second chance they deserve. There is no senior rescue specific to my area, so I recently founded the Middle Tennessee Senior Dog Project. We are currently applying for non-profit status.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Plan Ahead When Shopping

Plan every shopping trip, especially those to the grocery store. Learn the prices of items, so you'll know what is a good buy and what isn't. The more coupons, the better prepared grocery list, the less that has to come out of our wallets. It's money that can be used for other purposes.

Repairing Shoe Straps With "Insta Fix" Glue

I have some rubber after sport sandals that I find to be very comfortable. Unfortunately, the straps disengage long before the sole wears out, rendering them useless. I have used them a lot, and am not complaining about how long they've lasted, only about how I wish they'd last even longer! As I have a very difficult time finding shoes that fit, I need to keep these few pairs going as long as possible.

I actually solved the problem and will be able to use the sandals a bit more. I don't know how long the glue will hold, but it's been a few days with a lot of use, and so far, holding tightly. The glue was purchased from HSN and is called "Insta Fix". It binds many different surfaces together within seconds, so there's no time to fiddle with the fit - you must know what to do in advance. I also glued the knob back on a cabinet door after the screw broke in half - certainly much less expensive than replacing all the matching knobs.

The wonderful discontinued sandals are called R Max 2 and at http://www.ridersandals.com I have posted this address so that you can be aware of the material used in their construction.

Organizing Financial Information

I have a 3 ring binder for each of us (my husband and I) to organize our financial information and I also have a binder for joint financial information. In each of our binders I have a section for such as Social Security statements that come one time a year, a section for retirement information, section for life insurance, section for CD and savings and so on.

I use clear separator sheets that I insert contact information for each section. For instance my life insurance I have the name, address and telephone number of who to contact and how much the life insurance pay out should be.

My husband and I are not the only ones that know about these binders. I have shared our binders with each of our grown kids. That way if one of us passes away or we are not able to handle our own business and the other is not able to handle the financial side the thought is one of our kids can step in and assist. They have thought this is such a good idea that they have started their own binders.

Redistribute Leftovers After an Event

After an event, in the rush to clean up, many things may just be tossed out because everyone is too tired to think of anything else. But it's better to re-distribute the leftover food, cake, drinks, water bottles, napkins and so on among those who worked so hard to put the event together. Think of it as a non-cash tip! It's amazing how much people appreciate being able to take some food or drink home with them.

Plug Extension Cords Into Outlets Blocked By Furniture

When placing furniture in front of an electrical outlet, always plug in an extension cord into the outlet. You can hide the cord then when you need the outlet it is in easy reach. Extension cords are $1 at Dollar stores so you can have one in every blocked outlet.

Use a Hairbrush on Carpet Before Vacuuming

If you sew, knit, do crafts or have long hair, you understand how many threads can get caught up in your vacuum's roller. I've found the easiest way to prevent this is to take a regular bristle hair brush and quickly brush the carpet in the bad areas before vacuuming. In the past I used a lint roller but found the hairbrush works much better, costs less and is more efficient because it goes deeper down into the carpeting. Your vacuum will thank you!

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

Three preachers sat discussing the best positions for prayer while a telephone repairman worked nearby. "Kneeling is definitely best," claimed one.

"No," another contended. "I get the best results standing with my hands outstretched to Heaven."

"You're both wrong," the third insisted. "The most effective prayer position is lying prostrate, face down on the floor."

The repairman could contain himself no longer. "Hey, fellas, " he interrupted, "the most powerful prayin' I ever did was while hangin' upside down from a power pole."

Killing Mange Mites with Bleach

Does bleach kill mange mites? I have a small pool for my kids (15ftx2ft) and my 2 black Labs have mange that I am treating. Being Labs, they keep getting in the pool. I need to know if it's okay for my girls to still swim in it since I keep liquid bleach and Algae Guard in it?

I'm not trying to be lazy. It's just that it's hard to clean out and uses a lot of water and it would have to be done daily.

I painted my living room lamp burgundy and dry brushed the design in gold. I also painted the shade a brown. What a mistake! Distributing Estate Items to Family

My parent's left me their home and all of their 66 yrs of household and personal items! Activities for Someone With Parkinson's Disease

My father is a victim of Parkinson's Disease, and recently his condition has taken a turn for the worse. He is now unable to go to work or do any of the active things that he used to love to do. My mom has a full time job so my dad has to sit at home all day bored with nothing to do. Any suggestions on things to keep my father's mind engaged and to give him something fun to do?

Here's a little more information on my father. He does not really have very many hobbies. He was a man who loved work, being active (swimming, running, etc.), and coaching his kids (we are all moved out of the house now). The thing is that these are all things that my father cannot do anymore. Thank you very much.

Cleaning Espadrille Shoes

I have a used pair of little girl's Gymboree espadrilles. They have a pretty floral (cotton?) print bow over the top of the foot area that has quite a bit of dirt on it, as does the heel of the shoe. These shoes match a beautiful swiss dot sundress, so I really want to clean them. I know I could make them sparkle if I could soak them, but I'm afraid to do that. I realize they are scary looking, but I know they can be improved. Any ideas on how best to bring them back to life safely? Thanks very much!
