Starlight - Star (Miniature Cocker Spaniel)

This is a picture of the newest member of our family. Her name is Star and she is a miniature cocker spaniel that we got from the pound last October. They said she is about 7 years old. She is the most loving dog you have ever seen. Her favorite thing to do this hot summer is lick ice cubes until they are gone! This picture of her has been nicknamed Willy (for Willie Nelson) by my sister.

African Gray Parrots

I would share with you my two little babys. These are African Grays - they are 4 months old. I am still hand feeding them. The biggest one is a male and the smaller one is a female. He is always standing over her just like he is protecting her. It is so cute.

They are such a joy to handle and start to train them. They know on how to climb a latter. I am starting to lay the male on his back like a baby. I will miss it when I can't feed them anymore.

Straining Goats Milk

For straining goat milk I use a NEW plastic transmission funnel, only $1.00, and push a large cotton ball in it, loosely so the milk can flow easily. Because of the long funnel it holds a lot of milk at one time and doesn't turn over. No more buying exspensive milk filters, the milk is even cleaner too. This method can be used to strain any liquid.

Water Saving Tips

Tips for saving water. Post your ideas.

# Keep an empty gallon jug near the kitchen sink, and pour any leftover water from cooking or drinking into it. Once the jug is full, use the water on plants in the garden or home. House plants should be watered in the evening to reduce loss to evaporation.

# Install water saving shower heads, faucets, etc., and for long-term savings, a low-flush toilet.

# When you are waiting for hot water to warm up put a watering can under the faucet. Once full use it for gardening. Place a bucket in your shower to catch water that is wasted while you wait for it to warm up.

# Mulch around plants with grass clippings, compost, straw or ground bark. Mulch will hold moisture in the soil and reduce evaporation. Overtime, mulching will increase your soil's water holding capacity.

# Don't leave the water on while you are brushing your teeth. Turn it off after rinsing your toothbrush and wait to turn it on again when you need to rinse the sink and brush when you are done.

# Take dirty water from bird baths, flower vases, or pet dishes and reuse on potted plants.

Making Good Yard Sale Signs

Tips for making good yard sale signs. Post your ideas.

Signs for Neighborhood Sales

My neighborhood is having garage sales, but are disapointed in the turn out of people. Put up some signs on the highway. If you are having any kind of sale, try to promote it with lots of color, Tack up signs where permissable. When your sale is through, save the signs for next time.

Use Lids When Cooking

When cooking on the stove, put lids on your pans. The food will heat up much faster than if not using a lid. Thus, saving you money on your power bill.

Newspaper Toy for Kittens

Rip up the Sunday Paper and put the strips in a shallow cardboard box. I have kittens and this is their favorite toy. At night the kittens sleep in my daughter's room and we can't always find them. All we have to do is play in the box of paper strips for about 30 seconds and all of the kittens appear, it's like a magnet to them!

Turn Off Electronic Devices That You Are Not Using

In your office, while not using your equipment (ex. fax machine, scanner, printer, etc.) keep these items turned off or in "sleep" mode, until ready to use and turn off immediately after each use. You'll save yourself several dollars a year on your power bill, plus extending the life of each machine.

By Terri

Editor's Note: Some appliances draw power as long as they are plugged in, even if they are turned off. You can use a power consumption counter to determine how much power appliances are using on and off. We purchased one called "Kill A WATT" and have been trying it out on various appliances.

Dual Use for the Swiffer Sweep and Vac

I recently bought a Swiffer sweep and vac and I love it so much that I ran out to buy the swiffer wet jet. As I was looking at it I was thinking $20 bucks (plus the price of refill pads)? So instead, I paid 97 cents for a terry cloth rag. I used my own spray cleaner on the floor and attached the rag to my swiffer sweep and vac the same way you attach the disposables they come with. It worked great! I saved a ton of money by using my sweep + vac for both purposes and since I get to re-use the rag over and over again it's almost like residual income! :)

Embossed Stamped Images

To make your own anti-static pad to eliminate embossing powder sticking to fingerprints etc, bundle some bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) into an old hankie or piece of material, secure with string and wipe over card, glass, plastic or anything you want to emboss. Stamp the image, emboss it and you will have a professional finish everytime - NO MORE SMUDGIES. This will save you a few bucks in the long run as everyone has a bit of soda in their cupboard.

Cleaning Hardwood Floors

What is the best way to clean hardwood floors? I have found that with cleaners like the Swiffer wetjet or Murphys oil soap and others leave a film and streaks whether I dry it with a cloth or let it dry naturally. I also tried to dilute the cleaners thinking I've used too much. Most of my main floor is hardwood and I miss the shine!

Work-From-Home Administrative Assistant Business Names

Due to budget cuts, I will soon be a stay-at-home-Mom. I'd like to start my own business at home. I've been an Administrative Assistant for the past 15 years so that's the type of work I'd like to continue.

I was wondering if you creative folks out there could suggest a good business name or slogan for my business. Any other suggestions would certainly be welcomed!

Thank you!

Christmas Crafts for Kids

We are planning our annual company Christmas event. This event is for company employees with their families that will include children. The childrens ages range from 2 to 3 years and teenagers as well. We are in need 1 or two crafts that they can be involved in for about two hours of their time. Somthing that will not be too complicated or messy because of the location and other circumstances involved with the event.

We have a budget to follow and the cost needs to be minimal and yet fun stuff. The event will take place on December 10. The number of kids is not yet known. Would appreciate some help with suggestions. Thank you in advance for your help.

Coke Stains on Clothing

My 4 year old spilled soda (Coke) on two of her colored dresses that are 95% cotton, 5% spandex. I've tried Spray N Wash Stain Stick, Shout gel, Oxy Clean Spray, all to no avail. I think the one dress went through the dryer (just once), before I realized there were stains on it, but the other one has only been air dried.

I purposely bought these dresses a little big so she could wear them next year as well, and she only had them for a couple of months before getting these stains! Can anybody help??

Small High Powered Flashlights

How can you tell in the store if a flashlight puts out much light? I just paid $3.99 plus tax for a flashlight with a key ring that is about 3 inches tall called the "Mini-Bright" by Dorcy with TRUE SPOT REFLECTOR (what ever that means). I am not impressed with the amount of light it puts out. But this is not the first time I have been less than impressed with a small, purse sized flashlight.

Any suggestions for a small but high powered flashlight?

Holly
