Vol. 7, Num. 14, January 21, 2008 (Read It Online)

Here in the U.S. is the observation of Martin Luther King's birthday (January 15, 1929) and is a holiday for many people.

Here is a link to his "I Have a Dream" speech delivered August 28, 1963, at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C.

Craft: Recycled Jeans Purse

Make a statement, flower-child style, with this boho bag made from recycled denim. The fun of making these purses is that there are no rules - anything goes It's a great way to recycle favorite costume jewelry, use up bits and pieces of ribbon and trim and put creative juices to work for a truly one-of-a-kind result.

Approximate Time: 2-3 hours

Supplies

  • old pair of jeans or shorts
  • glue gun
  • leftover fabric (for lining)
  • buttons, ribbon, trim, lace, rhinestones, charms

Instructions

To begin, launder an old pair of jeans or jean shorts. Cut off jean legs or bottom of shorts to about 1-1/2 inch below crotch. Turn inside out and hand or machine stitch together. Now it's on to the fun part.

You may decide on a theme or color scheme first, or just plug in the glue gun, dump out the contents of your craft, quilting, scrapbooking or jewelry box, and get started. Begin by choosing a material to line the purse. Prettily-patterned scarves, bits of leftover quilting material or even old dresses or blouses with interesting detail all make fine choices. Cut the material to fit inside the purse with some overlap and use a glue gun to set into place. Trim material around the top of the purse and add a line or two of ribbon along the inside to give a finished look. Fit lace or ribbon around the "legs" at bottom of purse, again using the glue gun. Add sequins, beads, embroidery patches, bows, buttons, etc., to embellish. Attach strips of Velcro to the inside of the purse to close, if desired.

Choose a sturdy, stretchy fabric with some "give" for the handle. Purse #1 in the photo has a handle made from a narrow silk scarf, looped and double-knotted through the side belt loops. The handle on purse #2 is one I created by ripping lengths of floral material into 5-inch pieces and knotting together to form a 20-inch "rope."

I like to add quirky artwork to my purses. The photo on the back of purse #2 is of King Ludwig II of Bavaria (also known as the Fairy Tale king, an eccentric ruler and patron of the arts in Europe); I found the picture in an old songbook I picked up at a garage sale. Many herbal teas, such as Good Earth, print funny or thought-provoking quotes on their teabags. I snip and save the ones that interest me and glue them to the insides or back pockets of the purses, usually with an embellishment of a few rhinestones or tiny colored buttons.

Don't worry about getting too "matchy" or perfect with your boho bag. Instead, let the freewheeling flower child in you come out to play. The result will be a happy reminder of your own unique and creative spirit.

Scrapbooked Calendar/Planner

Calendar/Planner gift idea: Scrapbooking isn't just for photo albums

Supplies

  • Pocket Planner with clear plastic cover
  • Piece of cardboard or heavy paper to use as a template
  • Glue Stick
  • Scrapbooking paper (card stock)
  • Miscellaneous scrapbooking stickers, scissors and embellishments

Instructions

Remove planner from plastic cover. Open plastic cover and lay flat on cardboard Trace around cover and cut it out with straight edge scissors (this is your template). Place template on card stock that you want to be your planner cover and trace around edges. Cut out with straight edge scissors and fold in half. Place inside plastic cover to make sure it fits, this may require a little trim work. Remove from clear plastic cover and embellish with coordinating paper, trim, stickers etc. Be sure to decorate both sides. Use glue stick to attach embellishments that do not have an adhesive backing. Insert cover and planner into plastic cover.

This would also work with checkbook covers.

Laz'rus (Shetland Sheepdog)

Laz'rus is 3 years old and a Shetland Sheepdog. For Christmas 2005, my mother in law gave our other pups a gift card to Petco as a present. In April, my husband and I went to the store and there was a rescue there, and this beautiful Sheltie was up for adoption. He was abused his whole life, short chained to a tree, thrown in the basement, dragged up to be chained outside again. The owner's sister would be yelled at if she tried to pet or play with the dog (Bear was his name then) when she would visit. She was told that this dog was not allowed to play. The sister was a foster mom for a dog rescue and after almost 2 years, she convinced him to sign the dog over.

We met him in the store on a Saturday, he visited our babies in our home on Sunday and stayed with us for a week, a sort of "test drive". At the end of that week, Laz'rus became a member of our family. We changed his name for 3 reasons: my husband's family always has a dog named Bear (if one Bear passes away, they'll name a next one Bear), and we didn't want him to recall his abusive past when hearing the name "Bear", and since we were giving him a second chance at life, we named him Laz'rus.

For fun, he jumps around and races around with his sisters. He loves to sleep in twisted positions, like a pretzel, and be carried to bed by his Daddy. And he's crazy about travel and camping!

As coincidence would have it, Laz'rus shares his birthday with my husband!

Today's Tips:

Free Samples To Benefit Others

When I was a teenager, my parents and I took a trip to New Orleans, LA. While out shopping, sightseeing, etc. one day, we went past a homeless man sleeping on a bench, a shopping cart with his possessions nearby. That image made a huge impact on me, and though I live on a tight budget myself now as an adult, I'm very blessed! So I'm always looking for ways to contribute to the homeless or less fortunate in my area.

I was requesting free samples one day when it hit me that I could use this to benefit not only myself, but others. Even though my son is a preschooler, I saw free sample offers for diapers, wipes, men's deodorant, etc. on the site I was requesting samples from. I figured that I might as well go ahead and request those too.

Now I've started a "stockpile" of freebies to give to my local daytime homeless shelter, as well as a home that takes in women and children leaving domestic abuse situations. It only takes a few extra minutes to request those samples that I wouldn't use myself, but I figure that they'll be put to very good use after I donate them.

I'd encourage others to do the same. If you like to request freebies, get those you might not normally use, and donate them to the shelters and such in your own area. I think this quote sums it up nicely:

"Sometimes when we are generous in small, barely detectable ways, it can change someone else's life forever." - Margaret Cho

Use An Ice Cube To Remove Indents In Carpet

I saw this last night on a TV show. I haven't tried this but it makes sense.

When you move furniture on a carpet you are usually left with an indentation on the rug. They said to put an ice cube in the indent and let it melt. The moisture will rejuvenate the fibres and restore them to like new.

Add Salt To Your Cleaner For More Grit

If your cleaner doesn't have enough grit to it to do a good job quickly and easily enough, try adding a little table salt to it as you clean! I tried this today on my flat surface stove top, being out of my favorite regular brand, and it worked wonders !

Store Wrapping Paper In A Umbrella Stand

I use my tall brass umbrella "bucket" to store rolls of wrapping paper. All of my umbrellas are the small, compact type that get lost in the stand, so it works well for storing the wrapping paper. I keep the bucket in my coat closet where I also store my gift bags in a banker's box on a shelf.

Use O Rings For Stitch Markers When Knitting

I was working on a knitting project recently, and the pattern called for stitch markers. I could not locate mine, but my husband came to my rescue. He was doing a plumbing job on the kitchen faucet, and was replacing an "O" ring. I just "borrowed" 4 "O" rings in the correct size for my #ll needles, and proceeded with my project. You can purchase assorted sizes of rubber "O" rings where plumbing supplies are sold.

Homemade Fire Starters

I make my own fire starters to use when starting a fire in our fireplace and also for when we burn trash.

I save lint from the dryer. (since I also line dry, I also have a couple other people who save their lint for me as well--and YES they think I am crazy for asking for it). I then take the lint and stuff it into TP and papertowel tubes. They are easy to light and start a fire easily! It usually only takes 1 strike of a match to get them burning. You can also put used kleenex or papertowls into the tubes as well.

If I take the fire tubes on a camping trip, I sometimes dip the ends of the filled tubes into melted wax to seal. This keeps the lint from falling out.

(The melted wax is from crayon bits and leftovers from candles that I just melt in our candle warmer)

Combine Two Pairs Of Pantyhose

So you have two pairs of pantyhose/tights, both pairs are the same shade/colour and both pairs have a hole in one leg. So you cut off the legs with the holes and then wear both pairs one on top of the other, thus covering both your legs with a leg of pantyhose with no holes or ladders!

Poison Oak Warning For January

In our area, January is typically the coldest month of the year. We use a wood stove to heat the house and use the furnace only as back up. Interestingly enough, we came down with a nasty case of Poison Ivy/Poison Oak. The doctor said that January is actually the worst month for this because everyone handles wood to cut, stack or fill the stove. People don't realize that the oils in Poison Ivy and Oak are still very much present and highly contagious in the winter months as well. So, you may wish to wear gloves and wash your hands directly afterward. Be sure and keep your gloved hands away from your face also. You may save yourself a doctor's bill. Now, where did I put that Calamine lotion?

Ears Standing Up and Training a German Shepherd/Husky Mix

Here is my German Shepherd/Husky mix. He is 3 months old now, and it appears the bottom half of his ears have gone up, but not the rest. I know some mixes have the ears already up due to more Husky in them, but this little guy is pretty much half-and half.

I am wondering, is there anyone here (Shepherd or mix) that has a picture of the ears halfway up? I want to know that I am just not blindly hoping it is them trying to rise.

Also, we are not bringing our pup to training. Some things he picks up quickly, but he just will NOT learn to 'stay' and 'lay down'. We do it over and over, with treats, and show him how, but he is so treat-crazy he does for that instead of listening. Any tips?

Thanks!

Covering Wallpapered Walls with Texture and Paint

I've moved into a place where someone painted over wallpaper in my kitchen. Then the person who did it tried a glazing effect; it's uneven, I don't like the color (too dark). Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do with this room. Removing the wallpaper is not an option. It's stuck down good.

And I don't want to paper again as the room is quite large. Don't want to spend a lot of money. I really don't like the look of smooth walls and I'm wondering if anyone of you has used any of the textured products on the market? How easy was it to use and were you pleased with the results?

Removing Stain on Clothing from Dish Washing Liquid

I have a few cherished clothing items, which have been stained with dried dish washing liquid. I've been searching the web, trying to find a way to remove the nasty yellow stain the liquid has left on the fabric.

Getting a Mustard Stain Out of a Nylon Jersey

I got a two HUGE mustard stains on my Nylon Basketball Jersey! I tried scraping it off, but instead it just smeared. Then I put warm water on it, and very carefully used one of those Tide To Go bleach pens, which only took a little bit of yellow out. Then I washed it, and when it was done, the stain didn't look any different.

The next day I took it to the cleaners so they could try and fix it, but the stain still didn't look any different! The cleaning lady said she would try again. So now I'm here asking: Is there any way to get out a set in mustard stain out of a nylon jersey without using bleach? I can't use bleach because the jersey is reversible, and is green on the reversible side.
