Craft: Christmas Paper Angels

These are so sweet and easy! Just cut out a shape from paper (body and head), this is your template. Cut out two ovals of appropriate size for arms; wings are paper twist ribbon. They are approx. 6 inches high, can be personalized, hung on tree, used as fridge magnet. Or even make a garland! You can make many at a time. Cheers!

Craft: Personalized Snowmen

I bought these snowmen at an after Christmas clearance sale for about 50 cents each, and used colored markers to write my grandchildren's name on them. I will either display them next Christmas or give them to the grandchildren

This is a woodcraft that your youngsters can help to make to give to their teacher. It will take adult help to do the cutting of the apple, and perhaps to do the printing on the apple, but the kids can do the painting A good family night craft.

What Would Susan Do?

Recently, I needed some white plastic shelves put back together in a closet. However, I had a gap that didn't reach the top, but the full height of the shelf was too high.

So, I decided to use my trusty dusty little 3.97 hacksaw and cut the PVC like supports down. But, without a vise, it's hard to hold them.

Then, I swear, I thought to myself "What would Susan do"?

I had a couple of milk cartons stacked on each other, and slid one tube inside the hand cutouts, and was able to press the tube forward and cut it, without it sliding! It would work for wood dowels, etc.

I took a photo and went right to the computer to log on and submit it, when I heard the news about our wonderful and wise leader.

It took me a while to decide if I even wanted to submit anything anymore. I was not sure that her family was going to continue on and getting paid for ideas just seemed "tacky" for some reason. Then, I read so many things that she did and what we all said about her, and I thought she would want us all to keep up the good work she had started. So, here I am again.

I will start making some submissions of Valentines crafts, but I have to admit, I don't have as many as I did Christmas. However, I will keep going and keep thinking "Wow, wouldn't Susan have loved this one"!

Cleaning Out the Medicine Chest: Medicine Disposal

Resolve to clean out your medicine chest, never use medications that are not prescribed for you, are expired or which cannot be identified.

The proper way to dispose of unused medications:

  • DO NOT FLUSH medicine down the toilet or pour down the drain.
  • Place in a plastic bag and crush solid medications, then mix with water and kitty litter (This is how Hospice does it) or coffee grounds. Dispose of in the regular garbage.
  • OR talk to your pharmacist. They can guide you on medication disposal.
  • Dispose of any expired medications
  • Dispose of any prescription medications that you are not currently using under the care of the prescribing physician. That means the pain killer prescribed for you when you had that hernia surgery in July should be discarded.
  • Remove or destroy all identifying personal information from medication labels before placing in the trash.
  • Replenish items so you will be prepared when Junior wakes up at 3 am with a fever.
  • Always take medications according to their written directions (don't exceed dosages, take more frequently or mix with alcohol, etc.)
  • And lastly, make sure you read the label prior to taking any medication. Package inserts can change and some over the counter medications may not be safe to take with your prescriptions. When in doubt, consult your pharmacist. Always report ALL medications you take to your doctor-this includes your herbal supplements and any over the counter medications. Be safe, not sorry.

School Sports Uniform Payment Plans

When your children are picked to participate in school sports, ask if there is a payment plan on their sports uniforms. So rather than having to come up with the big lump sum all at one time, stretch the payment out so it's convenient for you and your budget.

Reuse Sewing Patterns By Scanning

Scan small pattern pieces - and vintage patterns! Since I mostly sew doll clothes, I'm used to scanning each new pattern as I obtain it. That takes several hours of image editing and standing at the printer/scanner, so it keeps me from going too nuts at the fabric stores' frequent 99 cent sales! Be sure to scan a ruler, too, to ensure that the printout is the right size.

Recently, I found several early 60's patterns that yielded wonderful doll outfits. I was very glad I scanned them and used printouts instead of using the fragile, old tissue pattern. My copy paper ones held up for several uses, and I still had the original, safe and intact in the envelope. I could make a thousand 'Oriental Sheath' dresses, without putting so much as a pinhole in the original tissue.

If you save the paper you used to cut the pattern from, you can use it as a template to get the best placement on print-design fabric. Just center the paper where you like, put the pattern piece down, and take away the paper.

Even if you make full size clothes, it's probably a good idea to scan those small but important pieces, and save them to your hard drive. Sewists know that it's the tiny little pattern pieces that always vanish ! Be sure to back up any of your scans to a CD-R.

It's within copyright to back up your patterns, long as you don't sell them !

Mismatched Sock Solutions

Do you ever wonder what happens to the socks that go in a pair and come out a single? Well, instead of doing the sock puppet route, I use them for other things.

  • Fill with Barley and tie the tube area in a knot. Freeze or microwave for sore muscles.

  • Decorate cute one for the Holidays.

  • Find the same kind and color, and keep it as a spare.

  • My Favorite is... When the weather outside is cold, I wear them under my matching socks for extra warmth. No one knows and they work great!

Enjoy!

Inexpensive Vinegar Glass Cleaner

Here is a great inexpensive and ozone friendly tip for cleaning windows and mirrors. Alcohol vinegar is found in almost every household and is a very good cleaning agent. Instead of using expensive and ammonia based window cleaners, I take an empty spray bottle (like the one you buy glass cleaner in), put a little less than 1/4 bottle of vinegar, about 5 drops (or one squeeze of dish lotion), and the rest water. Shake well and use to wash all glass surfaces. An extra tip, use old newspapers to wipe down the windows instead of a cloth, as it leaves no lint and a streak free shine.

Invest In The Proper Snow Removal Equipment

Grandma J here in MN. Got our share of the white stuff (snow) this winter, more coming. Considering we should prepare in October, it takes the first snow storm for us to do this.

Save your back and maybe your HEART! Investing in good snow removal equipment is essential, even for the basics. I bought a push shovel for about $25. Not a scooper of snow, just push it. Then have another one for scooping. Make sure you try them out in the fashion you will hold it, bend with it, etc. ERGONOMIC tools are there.

For my birthday in December, hubby bought me a new snowblower. Never touched one in my life. Always used the shovel. So when he was in the hospital before Christmas having a total knee, I had to learn to use it. Had to call him for help on the cell phone. Tucked it under my ear, you know how we multi task, and it flew across into a 3 foot snow drift. Me, screaming DON'T HANG UP. DUH! Did not run any trees over, got the property cleaned up nice, I might say.

I also have a scraper blade, looks like a garden hoe on the straight down. A MUST. Pops under the ice chunks, packed snow that you can't shovel off. Use it like a lever.

THEN HIDE your snow tools (but in a handy place for you) so they can't be borrowed by ANYONE! Family forgets where to return things they take "just for a bit".

If you find snow, ice sticking, take an old candle and rub the blade edges. SLICK.

Also, get a couple ice cream buckets and fill with an ice sanding element. Can be sidewalk salt, can be sand (what do you do with the sandbox stuff in the fall? Fill some buckets before dumping the rest into the garden!)

Anything left over can be stored till the next year. DO NOT SET the bag on the basement floor. Salt eats cement in long term position and mega amounts.

Save the Peach Juice from Canned Peaches

Save your juice from canned peaches. Freeze it in ice cube trays then when solid move over to a ziplock bag and store in freezer. Use them in your glass instead of ice when drinking iced tea. Is good with any tea, but especially good with raspberry tea.

Cereal Bags for Kitchen Chores

I save the cereal bag after we empty the box to use for many things like beating or chopping meat. Just put meat into the bag and lay it flat. Use a saucer or small plate to chop it, no mess on you or in the kitchen. I also cut the bags into fourths to use over things we heat in microwave. Saves from buying wax paper, etc. I'm very frugal, why waste anything?

Get Buckets from Bakeries

Go to your local grocery store bakery and ask if they throw away their icing buckets or donut glaze buckets. If they do, I am sure they would love to give them away instead. I am a cake decorator in one and I give away tons of buckets.

Reasons I have personally heard for getting the buckets: planting tomatoes (on ground or even hanging), collecting vegetables from garden, storing pet food, collecting honey, making wine, making pickled cucumbers. One lady picks them up for the local dog shelter to let the dogs chew on them. I am not so sure that is a safe practice but she says that it is fine!

So, help save the landfill and save some $$$$ too by asking for free buckets. We carry 3 different sizes too! And the labels on the buckets come off easy. Fill the bucket with warm water and let sit for a day or so, the label will peel right off!

Use A Salt Solution For Your Icy Driveway

If you need to salt your driveway or stairs, try this. My salt from last winter absorbed some moisture during the fall, and the salt bucket had as much water in it as salt. I scooped up a bunch of both and spread it out and had great results! The water becomes salty, so the water *and* the salt clear the ice! Make it really soupy so the water spreads way out. I tossed a bunch onto my ice-covered driveway from inside my garage door, and half the driveway ice melted.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

By chance, John Smith witnessed a mugging. About an hour later, the cops arrived, and the officer in charge asked the witness his name. "John Smith," John told him.

"Cut the funny business," the cop barked sharply. "What's your real name?"

"All right," said John, "put me down as Albert Einstein."

"That's more like it," said the man in blue. "You can't fool ME with that Smith stuff.

Chihuahua Yelping and Stiffening Its Neck

I have an 11 month old Chihuahua, she was in her kennel and began to yelp like she was hurt. We went in there to get her and picked her up and she kept yelping. She stiffened her neck and began to shake very bad then her eyes became very droopy. I laid her down with me and she urinated on me and she NEVER does that.

I have taken her to the Emergency Vet and all they did was feel her neck and give her some pain medications. Since I have taken her in this has now happened 3 more times. It comes about every month. I'm now beginning to worry, she is doing it again tonight. Please if you have any ideas what this could be let me know.

Pit Bull Whines Around Other Dogs

My boyfriend and I found an abused pit bull in a box outside our apartment building about a year ago. We decided to keep him and overall he is good, just very active. Recently I have noticed that when he sees other dogs he starts to whine and once he gets approach or he approaches them, he jumps back.

He usually whines if he needs to go out or if he wants you to play with him. So I am not sure why he whines when he sees other dogs unless it is out of fear. Basically he acts very skittish with other dogs and strangers. Any suggestions on what we can do to help him not be so skittish? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

"Stink Stack" Keeps Freezing Over

Any plumbers or roofing contractors out there? I live in Winnipeg, where the temperature is usually -35 to -45 degrees Celsius for 6 months of the year. This summer I put a new roof on my house. Now I have a big problem! My "stink stack" keeps freezing over! This never happened before. My house was built in 1935 and is a story and a half. It has a Cape Cod style roof (very steep angle), we put ice dam stuff on it and asphalt shingles.

What can I do to stop this freezing problem. Would wrapping the part of the stack that goes through the attic with insulation help? And, if so, what kind of insulation should I use? The roof is too steep to get up there in the winter. We have scraped the snow off from around the stack and removed the ice several times already, but it still freezes over. What can I do to permanently fix this, as I am told it is not good to have this happen!

Socializing a Dog-Aggressive Dog

I have a 5yo male German Shepherd that can be dog-aggressive but becomes socialized when he's around other dogs routinely. My problem is that when I am out with him for on-leash walks and exercise, that other off-leash dogs frequently attack my dog. Old dogs, young dogs, male or female it doesn't matter.

My understanding of this is that the other dogs perceive my alpha dog as a threat and so attack my dog first. I always fend off these fights and run the other way but it causes me a lot of problems.

I want to socialize my dog but I don't know what to do about other dogs attacking my dog when we are just minding our own business. What I do now is to stay away from other dogs but then that works against socializing my dog. What should I do?
