I'm having a slumber party for my 14th birthday. The party will be on September 17th and I need activities a decorations. The party will have an asian theme, and I don't want my party to be "baby-ish" so it is hard to find already made decorations. Please let me in on some good ideas!
Thanks, Alicia, almost 14

I'm having an Asian theme for my birthday/graduation. It's gonna be the day before graduation. I'm gonna take my friends out to dim sum then we're going to get our nails done. It's not the most Asian idea but dim sum would be a good place to go for an Asian themed birthday.

Use the 5 senses as a guide, Lots of red (visually) Asian Music (audio) Origami games (tact) incence (smell) Oriental food (taste) Visit the nearest China town in your city. They usually have an amazing assortment of ideas. Walk in the stores and just let the imagination go. Their artifacts will give you an insight of the culture. The idea is to transport your guest to an imagined trip to the beautiful Orient. Check out books at he library. Learn the culture, share the new aquired info with your guest by way of games . Parties are most memorable when they are fun and educational..

Check out Orientaltrading.com They have alot of neat ideas for party favors. I choose the clear takeout boxes and I am going to fill them with decorated chopsticks, fortune cookies, chinese symbol keychains, and lots of other cool things from there. I also found paper lanterns for $1.29 a dozen! All in all, it all cost around $40.00. They also have cute chinese dress invitations, as well! I hope my daughter will like this surprise 16 party! We are also going to use a piece of plywood and lay it over top of 2 cement bricks and cover it with a tablecloth so that it will be low to the ground. We are going to order a variety of chinese food and serve green tea. Hope these ideas help! Good luck!

i had an asian themed party for my 14th birthday last year and we ordered chinese takeout (fit to order to each of the guests) and used our basement door (we took it off) as the table. We placed flower pots under it to act as table legs and then put a gold tablecloth that we got inexpensively at wal mart over it. We used asian fabric as sort of a center decoration. We folded it to a small diamond shape and draped it over the center. Then we used white silky placemats that we found at the dollar tree. we also found these great little gold leaf decorations to use on the table. we got a set of chopsticks for each guest at the restaraunt where we got our meal. we also got these great chinese painted rocks (paper weights) at the dollar tree along with these really cute oriental containers with gold easter grass and candy as our gift favors. we also had cute vintage candle holders to decorate the table (we found these at the dollar tree as well). we wrapped up the night with different asian movies such as the king and i and horror movies like the grudge. we also made the candy sushi and had an "iron chef" contest to see which group of guests could make the tastiest! the party was a hit and it was a lot of fun. Just throwing some ideas out there for you. Hope it helps.

Hey there! For a nice Asian theme party I would suggest a Zen Gargen, take out boxes with flower arrangements in them with some nice asian native flowers or you could put party favors such as fortune cookies or a chinese luck charms, and a budda figureine, or maybe a small asian satchel with inscense and a holder, etc., be creative. You could have a cake shaped like or decorated with fortune cookies or dragons, etc. You could also hang paper lanterns (candle or string lights) you could also make oragami figures and set them on your table(s) or hang them from the sealing. You could prepare asian food and drinks (thai iced tea and bubble tea are my personal favorites). Hope you find this helpful. Good luck!

My neice is also having an Asian themed party for her 13th party. I happen to live in Okinawa Japan and am fun having lots of fun buying her stuff for the party. Oriental Trading magazine was mentioned already but you might also try Shindigz.com for other fun decoration. Activities you might consider is making your own own fortune cookies. If you heat the cookie up in the microwave for 3-5 sseconds you can remove the old fortune and replace it with a personal one. You can also make candy sushi with rice crispy treat , fruit roll ups as the sea weed and gummy fish for the inside. If I can be of any help email me- mcknight @ oasis.mediatti.net (remove spaces)

A game that sounds easy, but is actually pretty tricky is to put (dry, uncooked) rice in a bowl with paper clips mixed in with it. Each person takes a turn feeling around and picking out paper clips with his eyes closed for a set amount of time, 1 or 2 minutes. The one with the most paper clips wins. If you make the "Asian-inspired table lanterns" posted by Suzanne, you may be able to buy a roll of parchment paper in the plastic wrap/foil section of the grocery store for cheaper. I don't know. Just an idea. The paper may be thinner, but it is made for cooking, so it should be safe to be around a teeny tealight. I think I got tealight candles for less than $4 at Wal-Mart. You could look online or at the library for symbols to paint on them or draw on with a permanent marker. (Water-based marker may bead up or smudge.) Happy birthday!

Make your own chopsticks! We used to get balsa wood at the craft or hardware store, cut it to lenght, and then shape the rounded end with coarse and then fine sandpaper. Leave one end squared off. you can then take a fine point marker and "write" characters or names on them to personalize. Test your chopstick skills by moving M&Ms or jelly beans from one dish to another. The person who can move the most in 30 seconds is the winner!

I really like the idea of the parchment paper with the Asian letters - but another thing to consider is this - Use lots of red! If you watched the Olympics closing ceremonies, you would have seen the emphasis on red, when the Chinese accepted the next Olympic games. And for bulk party supplies - Oriental Trading Company has just about anything you want to fit any theme, at a great price. Paper lanterns, folding fans, etc. Just go to orientaltradingcompany.com.

Also, you might want to find some way to use those little cocktail parasols? (Or maybe this is too frilly?) The last pkg I bought was at a large lot store, 30 for $1.30 or so.

RE: Need Help With a Birthday Party With an Asian Theme
A very simple decorating idea is to buy a long peice of extra thick parchment paper either at a craft store or the bakery. Buy black paint and a brush. Go online and find asian characters (letters) to describe the words you wish for your son's next year of life. Paint these on the parchment in one letter then the next line next letter as in a banner. Fold top over a dowel rod and hang with ribbon. It's a touching and traditional touch

As centerpieces you can take either dark bowls or asian inspired bowls you have, find or pick up cheap via goodwill or dollar store. Buy flat river stones, about $5.00 for a five pound bag and place inside bowls building to a center peaked with a tealight. Float either real white flowers or petals or floating candles to finish your asian floating garden center peices.

Go to your local Michael's and purchase thick parchment paper and stock sticks of bamboo (about $8.00 for both) cut the sticks of bamboo to equal lengths and using a hot glue gun form four squares. Place squares together and glue. Now take parchment paper and cut to size. Glue to the square bases. You now have asian inspired table lanterns. You can buy a bag of 100 tealights for about $4. The bamboo sticks and paper make apr. 10 lamps.
