Dog Has Started Acting Aggressively Towards Owner

My Pitbull is showing signs of aggressive behavior towards me and the other dogs. When I approach him, his hair raises on his back, and he looks at me and starts growling. He's bark has changed to one that is more aggressive.

He is 5 yrs old; I raised him from pup. This behavior has been going on for 4 days.

He is hurting. he needs a vet. If he as just vaccinated, that often brings on aggression when it was never there before. I would suggest a homeopath.

You have gotten some great advice here so far. Cesar Milan (The Dog Whisperer) deals alot with dogs who have the capacity for serious agression in their genetic makeup. His books and DVDs' might be helpful. The point he makes over and over is that you need a professional dog trainer with this type of problem. Good luck!

Both these people are right, but most importantly, Get that dog to the vet immediately! You want to find out what the problem is and get it fixed before he gets any worse! He could do some serious damage to someone, and if you have kids, you don't want him being this way with them!

Ditto on the first post by Jane Powell. Also:
1. Is the dog neutered? Perhaps a female dog is in the area and his hormones are changing. This will create aggression.

2. Taking the role of alpha dog in the pack might be what is also going on. If this is it, view dvd's of Cesar Milan, the dog whisperer to find out what you can do to aid in stopping this behavior.

If he has always been a good calm dog, respectful of you, and nothing has changed recently (he has been hit or punished severely), I think this change has something to do with his health.

At 5 years old he is not too young to have an abscessed tooth (my mom's 6 year old had to have 2 removed last year), or a cracked tooth that is infected. Or he could have an ear infection that makes touching his head hurt. Or he could have pulled a muscle playing and his leg or shoulder hurts. I would muzzle him and examine him for all of that and better yet take him right to the vet. Might need antibiotics, etc. Let us know what you find out.
