Does anyone know anything about ING saving account? I found it online, but I'm more than a little skeptical about it. Anyone have any ideas or tips?

Thanks,

I have an Orange account. The interest rate has dwindled and the customer service is terrible. There are problems with the website which will hinder access to your money. I am really not pleased with at all and am considering removing my money.

I have had an ING account for several years. While the convenience is wonderful, it is sad to watch the savings rate dwindle from the once fabulous 5% to hovering just above 1%. Also, it seems like they are taking an awful long time to post a deposit to the account - hmmm - it was always just a few business days but now it's up to 5. What was once a terrific option has now gone a bit stale...

I have been with ING Direct for about 4 years, and I have been very satisfied with their services. I have a savings account and have had a few Cds. I have never had to talk to a representative over the phone because everything can be done right on the website and it is very simple and self explanatory. I have good credit and know how to use a computer, so perhaps if you have neither, you should try your local bank.

@ING Rep ING closes the account if a customer insults a representative over a phone call? Seems a bit harsh. They are large enough to know that it is expected to deal with all types of customers...even the angry ones. Else, that explains why there are so many customer complaints!

And really, corporate merger in 2 days? Please tell me that is an exaggeration. If you cannot adequately plan for acquiring another company, it does not make business sense to move in that direction. If that's not an exaggeration, that makes a good case for me NOT to bank with ING

When a customer has a line of credit on their checking account, we reserve the right to check credit. It's the same with any credit cards that you may have. When we initially opened our electric orange, it automatically came with an overdraft line of credit. We didn't initial check credit, but fully disclosed that we reserve the right to. Our policy changed and we had to tighten up. The customers who didn't initially have their credit checked ended up getting their credit checked. Then some customers didn't qualify for the overdraft protection. If someone complains about having their credit checked its because of that.

I love ING Direct! Everytime you call their call center you always get a live representative no automated systems, which I love! I also bank with WAMU/JPMorgan Chase and you always get an automated system, the only way to by pass it is to enter a pin#...if you forgot that # then you are sooo out of luck! You can't get a live person without that #!

Also I am a big fan of their Electric Orange checking account. With my checking I used to have at Bank of America and WAMU...everytime I used my debit card they would wait so long before they deducted the amount from my balance, so I would think I had money to still use. As soon as I made a purchase, they would post the previous charges causing me to go overdrawn in my checking account and I got a ridiculous amout of overdraft fees! With ING Direct as soon as I make a purchase they deduct it from my balance the moment I do it! I feel like they are not out to mess me over like the other banks I used to bank with.

With the Electric Orange Checking account it was just a one time credit pull when I first applied and I chose a $165 line of credit for protection you can also leave it at a $0 if you don't plan to use it. Keep in mind ING Direct is a Savings bank with the goal to help us save money not get into more debt...so don't expect to have a large line of credit amount. Best of all no NSF fees ever! I haven't seen my credit be pulled more than that one time when I first got the account. The Orange Savings Account is credit free so no pulls on that. I have called and verified with ING Direct.

For the negative comments, I have been with ING Direct for over 3 years...as long as you do your part with entering your "correct" info and verifying the steps that are required then you would be fine. We should all appreciate their intense security and understand that they are trying to protect our info.

I always find it amusing to read customer's complaints. I've been working at ING for a few years, and the customers who complain are just angry that they didn't get their way. Customer's call in screaming at us because they were negligent and forgot their information. (I must say that the majority of our customers are very sweet) These complaints are irrational and over exaggerated.

ING Direct always disclosed that there may be a 2% charge for international transactions. We never charged it before, but when we decided to implement the fee, customers got upset. Also, the electric orange hasn't even been out for 5 years!

When a customer is "closed", they must have done something bad. They either insulted a representative over a live phone call, abused an account, etc. Just because you have $25K doesn't mean that we'll forgive that.

Addresses are put in by CUSTOMERS online. When people apply on the website, they write their name, address, etc. If it's entered incorrectly, that's your fault!

The person who says ING kept their money - you must have not followed up. The process of opening an ING Direct account is so streamline, that I find it hard to believe that anyone would have difficulties. People will often open the account and never verify what we clearly explain. The "hoops" that you jumped through were for security because you delayed verifying your account.

Anyone who had Netbank, I can understand your frustration. The netbank conversion wasn't exactly as smooth as possible (seeing as how we had 2 days to plan it). Netbank was supposed to be bought out by another company, but they bailed out at the last minute. The FDIC came to ING in the matter of Netbank. Where the other company had weeks to plan it, we had 2 days.

The customer who never received a 1099 was probably set up for electronic tax forms. When you agree to electronic communications, everything is available online.

Anyway, I really hope that customers would stop taking their anger out on the employees at the call center. We really try to help our customers in their situations, but sometimes there's nothing we can do. Sometimes customers get themselves tangled in a nasty mess, and we need to get them out - which may not be easy. I hope that everyone who wrote nasty comments really think about why things happened the way they did.

I am an avid user of the accounts and was before I worked for the company. Not once did I have to call in. We offer really good products and good customer service. We don't make exceptions. Everyone is treated equally, and some people aren't used to that. Some people are used to the "Gold" checking account that pays .01% interest for balances over $1million. Some people enjoy thinking that they're better than others.

We don't care if you have $1 or $1 million, we'll treat you equally - no special attention. The majority of these complaints are from customers who expected to be treated differently - and that didn't happen. Its nice to see how many people do enjoy the accounts though :)

Today is 2/5/09. I have no problems with ING. However, nowadays, financial institutions are in financial trouble, so I asked ING to send me their financial statements about a month ago and I have not received a reply yet. I want to be reassured that they're doing OK financially. I hope I'll receive it soon.

I haven't had any trouble with them, but I must say the posts on this website worry me. So far everything has been just fine but it is just me and no co-signers. I have CDs and a bank account and "electric orange," which I do not use. It is primarily a savings account for me.

Terrible service. After 5 years of being with ING I closed both my accounts after they started to charge a 2 PERCENT withdrawal fee for international ATM withdrawals (after it had been free for the first 5 years). Also horrible customer service and yes, they require an overdraft (which I didn't want) which does allow them to pull unlimited credit reports.

STAY AWAY from ING - one of the worst banks I've dealt with.

They wouldn't let me add my wife to my savings account simply because she closed an account with them in the past. We planned on having ~ 25k in the account and they couldn't care less that they were going to lose the accounts. Very, very frustrating.

Opened an internet savings a/c. Took them forever. They messed my address up then as system would not verify me (their mess up) I had to provide them with proof of passport etc. So i gave up - 2 weeks for nothing and 2 weeks loss of interest as far as I am concerned. Totally hopeless calling them - queued for more than 40 mins each time, so I told them that if it was this bad at the start, they instilled no confidence in me saving £50k with them. The woman who closed the a/c could not have cared less, so I proved I was right to elsewhere, Tesco, in comparison, have been so so easy to deal with and open an a/c with. Got to them as rate is better anyhow !

I had a savings account with ING Direct and they closed it because, they said, they had pulled my credit report through Transunion and didn't like what it had to say. For a SAVINGS ACCOUNT. Right. Now I had made more withdrawals one month than I was allowed to do by federal regulations, and if they'd said that was why they closed it, it would have made more sense. But that wasn't the end of it. Then they kept sending me junk mail after that. Even though I had no account with them anymore and they probably won't let me open a new one anytime soon. I'm not sure what they are smoking over there but whatever.

In a recent review (http://www.savingtoinvest.com/2008/ ... ops-apy-to-325-why-i-now-prefer.html) I looked at ING vs HSBC and how to choose an online savings account. ING is the best choice currently.

ING Direct is our mortgagee. In almost 3 years we never missed or were even late with a mortgage payment. We notified ING Direct that we could no longer make payments on our home and unfortunately they would have to foreclose on us. BTW, we previously had credit rating in the 700's.

When our mortgage payment was 1 week late, ING took every cent out of my children's savings accounts, earnings from baby and pet sitting for neighbors, over 2600.00 dollars.

Really disappointed in fast-talking mortgage refinance folks. Didn't answer questions well and botched my property appraisal at the 11th hour. Starting from scratch now... anyone recommend a GOOD mortgage co?

I opened an Electric Orange account with a $51,000 deposit and was stunned that they required me to get a $185 "overdraft credit line." I told them I didn't want it and that I wasn't going to use the account as anything other than a savings account because it had the highest rate available at this time of 3.2% for a deposit of $50K to $99.9K. They said to "simplify the process" the overdraft feature is required for everyone. ING keeps pulling my credit report and won't stop. It already cost me about 30 points on my FICO score according to FICO and ING won't stop. They said the only way to get them to stop pulling the credit report is to close the account, which I am going to do. It appears that they pull your credit report TWICE A MONTH, probably for sinister marketing purposes.

While ING Direct does have good rates, BEWARE THE ELECTRIC ORANGE ACCOUNT. This transactional account *requires* that you get overdraft protection as a ruse to *require* you to authorize ING to make unlimited credit file inquiries and, unfortunately, this results in a hit to your FICO score. Angela Green at ING Direct's LA Call Center confirmed that when you set up the Electric Orange account online, you agree to allow ING to pull your credit report as often as they like and for any reason. She also confirmed that no one at ING can tell you how often or for how long they will keep requesting a copy of your credit file. But for me, they requested it twice in a single month, which was the exclusive reason for my FICO score dropping according to FICO.

I have had ING for about a year now. They gave me $25 to start the account, and required no minimum to start it. Being a college grad, I needed something that was going to be the beginning of a good savings account without being totally tied up in a CD. I must say, that anyone who has problems with any transfers, etc. is beyond me. It's incredibly easy to use. I does take about 3 business days to transfer in and out as well as a period that they hold your money, but if people would read this ahead of time it's actually a really good thing. It teaches you to budget and set aside money that you cant just yank out of the bank when you want to buy a new purse. It makes you think about and plan your purchases, etc ahead of time. I use this as a SAVINGS account, and not something I put money in that I will need to pay bills or the car breaks down and I need money asap. Last year I earned almost 200 in interest...and have already earned over $50 this year alone. It is a money market type account though, so don't expect the interest rate to grow anytime soon...but hey, it beats the $0.07 i made from my checking account all last year....

The best product on the market for anyone that has money they would like to invest and earn a return on. By far the best customer service. I have only called one time for any reason or concern considering by account. AMAZING.. I actually sit here and watch my self get richer by doing absolutely nothing. If any one actually has a real problem with this bank? They are possibly not old enough to utilize there online banking options and should ask there parents for advice. Stay with ING Direct & get rich.

I've had an account with ING now for about a year and have had ZERO problems with them. I have transferred a ton of money out and into the account without incident and the auto withdrawal thing they have set up is great! Seriously- I am skeptical of everything online, and I am having a great time with ING. Even if their APY went down to 3.6% now, I'm still not leaving- heard too much negative about everyone else. Why leave a good thing?
I think all the people here complaining are employees or owners of the other banks.. LOL...getting paid to make the good bank look bad so they can get your money. I can't imagine having a hard time with ING unless it's your own doing! :)

Wanted to access my funds in any of my three accounts with ING (formerly Netbank), but after almost a month, no success yet. They insisted ask two small deposits from the previous netbank, which now the website doesn't exist. Everytime we called, they always ask for some new info, etc. I guess it will work for individual account, but not joint account owners. They treated us like two different account holders, asking two sets of different log info. And the worst part, not at once. Everytime they promised it will be the last step, there always be something new comes up. Can't trust them anymore. Will never deal with them again, and ask all my friends leave.

I love my ING Direct account. It doesn't have the highest APY but you won't get better customer service anywhere else. Also, their online interface is just easy and awesome.
I also do still have many referral links left if anyone would like to contact me to receive a link (either for an orange savings account or the electric orange checking/savings account) to sign up for an account. You receive $25 for signing up with a min. of $250 or more. A nice little bonus for nothing! Just shoot me an e-mail @ z3trkrnr AT gmail.com and I'llsend the link right back to you!

ING DIRECT - BEWARE of 10 business day hold on initial savings deposit!!!!

I MADE A MISTAKE.

NETBANK and ING DIRECT are merging. When I followed ING DIRECTs prompts, they led me to open a savings account. I did not read all the statements clearly. After my $11,000 was transferred from NETBANK, I logged in to ING DIRECT and attempted to access my funds. When I could not access my money, I called them and was told there is a 10 business day hold on my money -- 10 days!!!. 12 days when you add the weekend. Is anyone aware of such a thing as a 12 day hold for any transaction in todays world???

Anyway, I spoke to a supervisor, and they attempted to stop the transfer on 30 Nov. Even though ING owns NETBANK, they were not successful. Now I have to wait until 12 December to access my money.

The customer service people are nice, and they somewhat tried to help. However, they are not enabled to help in this case. Policy overrides logic. Policy overrides customer satisfaction. Policy causes the money you put in a savings to be locked up for 10 business days.

Maybe the web page could have been designed to inform me totally that there was a better way.

I suppose now, on 12 December I will take my money and go elsewhere because of this experience. Too bad, because I think that ING DIRECT has some features I like.

By the way, their Bill Pay is not as good as Bank of America (BOA). BOA lets you set up automatic bill payment to pay a bill in full (versus the minimum amount).

I found via http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf56354852.tip.html that HSBC and Emigrant Direct compete with them.

To be somewhat fair, once your account is established, the delay for transfers is 2 business days. Still, this delay not acceptable to me, and I am in search of other products out there.

ING Direct is AWFUL! Their customer service reps are nasty. The company will cut your account off at the drop of a dime. Read the blogs about the horrible things this company has done to some of its customers. You can get a half a percent higher from HSBC or Emigrant Direct. Buyer beware with ING Direct. Your account may be the next one cut-off - just when you need the cash.

I am a dissatisfied former customer of ING Direct. I found their customer service to be very poor. I never did receive a 1099 from them last year. Their interest rates are no longer competitive. HSBC online is now paying 6%. I use them and I am completely satisfied.

I've had 3 accounts with ING for several years. I think they're great! I have never had a problem with deposits or transfers, and I really like their higher interest rates. As mentioned in a prior post, transfers do take about 2 days to complete - so some planning ahead is required.

I've had an ING account for the past few years and love it. It is very easy to transfer money to my regular checking account; and the fact that it pays more interest than any local bank is wonderful. I closed my Fidelity account because the interest rate had gotten so low.

Request: ING Direct Reviews

Archived on 01/11/2007

I have seen reviews about Emigrant on this website. Does anyone have any feedback about their experiences with Ing Direct and their savings account?

Thanks,
Jim from ND

Answers:

RE: ING Direct Reviews

I've had 2 savings accounts with ING Direct since February - one for me and one for my granddaughter. I think it's great. The interest is higher than I can get at a bank. I check my account online pretty frequently - it's always up to date. On a few occasions, I have requested a transfer - either to or from my checking account. The transfer always goes thru in about 3 days with no problems at all. (10/31/2005)

By Southern Saver

RE: ING Direct Reviews

I use both Emigrant Direct and ING. Emigrant Direct is a bit more cumbersome, doesn't do the direct transfer thing like ING does, so you are more likely to let your money sit there (might be a very good thing).

ING is great for putting money you might have to pull back out in a hurry, like your "rainy day" money. Pays more than local banks but is easy to get to (does take a couple of days, but you can order the transfer online at any time.) (10/31/2005)

By Jeneene

RE: ING Direct Reviews

I'm so sorry... I went back to Emigrant Direct and now find you can transfer money in and out just like ING. So they are both equally good and easy to use, just go for the one with the best rate. (10/31/2005)

By Jeneene

RE: ING Direct Reviews

I love ING Direct. It's got the best savings program that I've found. Right now I earn 4.4% interest on my savings without having to lock up my money in a CD! It's easy to use, VERY secure and extremely convenient! Customer Service is just a toll free call away and they have always been friendly and ready to help me resolve any issues I was encountering - which has rarely been the case! You can "link" your regular banks account to your ING account, so transfering money to ING is just a few clicks away. It's soo easy! I can't say enough good things about this banking system.

Referrals earn $25 just for opening a new account and $10 for referring friends! If you'd like a referral to open your account and earn an instant $25. (10/19/2006)
