Today's Tips

School Supply Clearance Sales

If possible, wait to buy most things after school starts when school supplies go on sale.

Milk Jug Replacement Parts

The opaque lens cover on our motion light cracked and fell apart from time due to weather. To save time and money, instead of replacing the light or trying to find a replacement cover we just cut a new one from a empty milk jug. It looks great and works fine.

Let Your Blender Clean Itself

Washing my blender used to be a dreaded task. Not any longer! Now, I squeeze a little dish soap and warm water in the blender and let it run until it's clean. Then rinse and let dry.

Unusual Garden Decorations

I like to decorate our yard with unusual items during the summer months and get quite a few compliments on how wonderful and "inviting" our yard looks.. We even won a beautification award from the city we live in. My most recent "thrifty" idea was:

My neighbor was throwing out one of those plastic blue/pink child's shopping carts as one of the wheels was cracked. I asked if I could have it - she gave it to me. I asked people at work to save me their plastic Folger's ground coffee containers. I had gotten some seeds from a neighbors plant for marigolds. I glued the cracked wheel on the shopping cart. Then I drilled holes in the bottom of the Folger's container and filled it with dirt and planted the marigold seeds. I put the Folger's container in the shopping cart and put the cart on our front porch. Now I have a beautiful plant growing in a colorful shopping cart and it has been quite a conversation piece and is really cute!

Attach Jars to Your Shelves

When you have loads of small things to store in your shed or workshop, such as nails, screws, etc, here's a cool tip:

Save jam jars and screw the lids to the underside of your workshop shelves. You can see what is in the jars and screw/unscrew the jar of your choice. Just make sure your shelf is secure and sturdy enough to take the extra weight.

Popsicle Sticks for Small Children

When teaching small children how to spread things like peanut butter, jelly, etc., let them use a popsicle stick, which won't be sharp, but will still serve the purpose nicely.

Lilacs Love Eggshells

Lilacs love eggshells, and give your coffee grounds to your acid loving plants. Don't forget to give those banana peels to your roses, and if you know someone who raises bunnies... their pellets are pure alfalfa for your roses! Also keep oranges & grapefruit out of your compost... makes it too acidic.

Less Lawn, More Garden

Use the space where your lawn is growing to grow food or at least use some kind of living ground cover that you do not have to use up natural resources to water, fertilize, weed and cut.

RE: Make Your Own Sanitizing Wipes?

Cut a roll of paper towels in half (serrated Knife works well) so it looks like two toilet tissue rolls.

Into a liquid tight container..big enough to hold the cut roll of towels (old baby wipe container or regular plastic-ware.)

Pour:
1 cup water
1 tablespoon baby wash OR baby shampoo (that's also for regular baby wipes)
Now add approximately 10 drops tea tree oil for anti bacterial and anti fungal properties.

(I wouldn't use this on the baby as I do not know what it could do to sensitive skin it is related to eucalyptus.)

Put smooth side of roll down into the liquid...leave to 15 minutes, flip over so smooth side is up, cardboard core should lift right out of the center. I throw out the first towel as it has glue on it.

For the second Roll get another container

Pour: 1 cup water pour A little pine sol

Soak towels flip..now leave in bathroom for a quick clean-up.

Don't confuse the two LOL LABEL YOUR CONTAINERS!!!!

Alcohol is used in sanitizing products, I have not tried this with paper towels.

Featured Feedback: RE: Recipes for Getting Rid of Ants

Mix equal parts Borax and powdered sugar. Set out in lids from baby food jars, or lids of similar height, just a teaspoon or so in each bait. It may take a few days, but it works. You may need to place new baits out after a few days in really humid weather. Be sure to place your bait in places inaccessable to pets and children.

Featured Feedback: RE: Tips on Growing Roses

I have two rose bushes that I have had for years and do not do a whole lot with them except to cut off the dead heads. I put coffee grounds on them also, but just recently I read somewhere, maybe on here, to use banana peels. I tried it and one of the rose bushes went wild! There must be five buds on one branch. I have never had this bush do much of anything. The other one doesn't seem to care one way or the other, but it does do well with coffee grounds. Now if I can only do something about the japanese beetles distroying them!

Featured Feedback: RE: Creative Planter Ideas

Tyre rims - clean the metal thoroughly using a wire brush or and electric drill attachment, to remove any rust or loose paint then paint with anti rust primer and car paint.

Plants complete with pots can then be arranged within the rim.

More of this sort of thing can be found at

Today's Recipes: Have a Frugal Pizza Night

Every Friday I make pizza. I figure this saves $25 or over every week.

Dough:

This make 2 pizzas.

2 cups water
2 Tablespoons oil
1 tsp salt
6 cups flour
2 Tablespoons yeast (2 packets)

I use this in my bread machine but I'm sure it could be adapted to a traditional recipe or you can buy white bread dough in the freezer section cheap.

Sauce:

10 1/2 oz tomato purree
1/4 cup water
1/2 Tablespoon sugar
1 Tablespoon oil
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp basil
1/2 tsp thyme
1 tsp garlic
1 tsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp salt

Bring all ingredients to boil then simmer on low for 15 minutes stirring occasionaly.

When sauce and dough are ready put:

1/2 lb grated mozzarella and sprinkle evenly with parmesan cheese. Then add any other toppings you like.

How to Get Out of Debt, Stay Out of Debt & Live Prosperously
by Jerrold Mundis

Millions of consumers have become trapped in a spiral of debt, but there is hope. If you wants to free yourself from the shackles of debt, this book is for you--it can help you "get out of debt, stay out of debt, and live prosperously." Jerrold Mundis writes in a friendly, engaging style, urging readers to stop the cycle of spending. Mundis knows what he's talking about--he, too, was once thousands of dollars in debt and didn't know where to turn. Anecdotes from Debtors Anonymous folks, plus multiple examples from the writer's own life and ledgers, make How to Get Out of Debt an encouraging read, not a condescending one. Once you start your program, you may want to periodically reread some chapters for inspiration--and fun. -Amazon.com
