A Puzzling Craft

This clever craft produces a nice gift or an educational kid's toy using recycled materials. You will need a sturdy, but not thick, piece of cardboard. The front or back of a cereal box is perfect. Choose a photo, a magazine picture, the front of a greeting card, etc. and glue it onto the cardboard. On the back of the cardboard, draw jigsaw shapes. Keep in mind the skill level of the person for whom you are making it when drawing the shapes. Cut out the shapes, put them in a ziplock bag or an empty card box covered with wrapping paper.

When my husband and I were dating, I enlarged a picture of myself, made the puzzle, and mailed the pieces to him with a note attached saying, "Do I puzzle you?" I think it would be a nice grandparents' gift. Enlarge a picture of the grandchildren and send it along to them. For a child's puzzle, you could use a pictures of the child or other family members, their favorite characters, alphabet letters, numbers, shapes, animals, etc. Great way to encourage problem solving skills and fine motor skills. When they are old enough, it would be a nice rainy day project.

Craft Project: Can-Can Easter Baskets

Recycle cans to make these charming little baskets. I used a large vegetable can, soup can, and tuna can. Embellish with ribbon, buttons, stickers, etc. These are great for Easter or May Day!

Craft Project: Sibling Bubble Birth Announcement

With the impending birth of a new sibling, we bought a couple dozen bottles of the bubbles that can be used for weddings, etc and decided that Tegan (3 at the time) could announce the birth of her new sister in this manner.

Craft Project: Coffee Can Marble Painting

This is a craft my 2 year old loves to make. She loves to shake up the marble in the coffee can and then take the lid off to discover her masterpiece. She also likes to watch herself shake the can in the mirror. So cute!

Craft: Yarn Keepers

I make these yarn keepers from empty 2 litter bottles. Your yarn stays clean and tangle free.

Step 1. Empty and wash bottle

Step 2. Remove label

Step 3. Cut in half

Step 4. Fill with a skein of yarn

Step 5. Run end of yarn through neck of bottle

Step 6. Take clear tape and reseal your cut

Or cut a hole in side of bottle and run end of yarn out it then you can also keep lid on bottle.

Craft Project: Cute Pompom Chick

Have a go at making a cute pompom chick. All you need to make your chick is some card rings, yarn, scissors and a few craft basics. What's more, you'll soon get hooked on making pompoms and will want to make a whole brood of chicks for your friends. So pick some yarns and get started - the kids are bound to want to join in, too!

Tips:

Picking Up Straight Pins

I've been sewing on my kitchen table without using a pin cushion because I couldn't find it, LOL! So I took a lint brush, the sticky kind, to gather up the straight pins instead of sticking my fingers. Works great!

Save Lunch Baggies for Storage

I use zip lock bags for my children's lunches but they don't like them after a couple of uses as they look crinkled. I don't throw them out. I found them useful for small pieces of fabric that I have prepared for patchwork. Also categorize coloured cottons elastic and bias binding. My sewing cupboards are getting tidier. And less waste.

Make Bathmats Out of Towels

I needed to get some packing materials so I stopped at a thrift shop and bought some towels. I decided to select towels with pretty terry cloth patterns and when I got them home I cut off the ends, folded them in half and sewed around the edges (except for an area to turn it inside out). I turned it and hemmed the edge. It makes a great absorbent bath mat!

Frame Greeting Cards as a Holiday Decoration

I love to save greeting cards people have sent me over the years. One day, while going through my box of cards, I thought how pretty they were and it was a shame they were packed away in a box.

I went to a local craft store and purchased an inexpensive frame. Now, when each holiday rolls around, I take one of my greeting cards and slide it into the frame. I can display it on a shelf or end table or wherever I need a little holiday cheer. It's inexpensive and helps recycle those greeting cards!

Use Dental Floss to Hang Plastic Easter Eggs

We like to hang up plastic Easter eggs on our trees outside. We found the best string to use was dental floss. It really withstands the weather well!

Craft: Aluminum Foil Sculptures

Making aluminum Foil sculptures; children love making these sculptures and you can add more fun by encouraging them to make up a story using their efforts. The possibilities are endless.

Instructions for a figure: Using a square of foil, tear two slits one third down the foil which will be the arms and head, then one slit one third up which will be the two legs. Scrunch the middle part which will be the body then the legs arms and head into shape.

Instructions for animal/dog: Same again except two slits at the bottom for the two legs and the tail.

WARNING! This can be addictive, I happen to know!

Knitting a Sweater Without a Knitting Board

I have finally found a pattern (online) for a very simple knitted boat-neck pullover sweater. The problem is that it is done on a knitting board, and I have never used one. I would prefer using the regular two needle method. I'm sure this can be done, but I don't know how. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks.
