Heavenly Bailey (Meliquin Great Dane)

Sabra's Heavenly Bailey is 6 Months old. She is a Female Merliquin Great Dane and was our first puppy from our Zia.

She loves to play with her rag doll. She thinks that she owns the bed.

She is so loving, and sweet. I fell in love with the Great Danes. Her mommy just had a litter of 11. She is a delight to play with and watch all the silly things they do. I guess that why Scooby-Doo won everyones hearts.

Use Auto Focus

My tip is to use a digital camera with a 256 mega-byte card and click away using auto focus, at anything that catches your fancy...then load the pictures into your computer. Now, fix them one by one. Those that are blurry, delete. Those that you decide are not worthy of keeping, delete.

Preparing an Unstuffed Turkey

For those of you that's like me and don't like a stuffed turkey, here's a easy recipe for cooking an unstuffed turkey for your Thanksgiving dinner.

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees F. Remove the neck and giblets from your turkey. Rinse the entire bird (inside and out) in cold water, then pat it dry with paper towels.

Place the turkey (breast side up) in baking pan. Lightly salt the inside and out of the turkey. Brush the skin with cooking oil and season again.

Place a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh. Cover with foil, leave an air space between the turkey and the foil. Remove the foil the last hour of cooking. The turkey is done and can be removed from the oven when the thermometer reads 170 degrees or when the turkey's drumsticks move easily in place and the juices run clear from the thigh.

The time it takes to cook the turkey depends on the uncooked weight of the turkey. Here's an easy guide: 8-12 lbs. cooks for 2 1/2 to 3 hours.. 12-14 lbs. cooks for 3-3 3/4 hours. 14-18 lbs. cooks for 3 3/4 - 4 1/4 hours.

**Add 15 to 30 minutes to these times when roasting a stuffed turkey**

ENJOY AND HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Holiday Autograph Tablecloth

My best holiday tip! Buy a nice new or vintage linen tablecloth for your dinner table. Before, after or during have everyone autograph and date it. During the following year, you stitch over the autographed names with cotton floss. You will enjoy remembering as you stitch in Aug. Everyone enjoys looking for their autographs from years gone by. It's a very special tradition in my family. A nice new tablecloth for newlyweds first Christmas. Peace on earth, happy holidays and God bless all!

Decorating with Tins

Finding inexpensive things to decorate your home, can be as easy as finding beautifully painted tins to sit around at eye level or on top of cabinets. If you'd rather not have them sitting around, you could take the lids off and hang them on the wall. You wouldn't even have to use a nail, just use a push pin off the bulletin board and then place the tin's lid on the push pin and now you have a nice add to your decor. You can find tins of all decor at yard sales or at thrift stores very cheap prices and for all seasons.

Travel Savings - Bargaining for a Hotel Room

We need to book a hotel room to go and visit my mother-in-law over the holidays because she lives in senior housing and cannot have overnight guests.

I looked up the hotel rate on Expedia.com. I then called the hotel directly and asked them if they could beat the online price. I saved $30 a night for two nights. This particular hotel has suites with a full kitchen, a separate bedroom, two TVs and a pull couch for another bed.

We can cook our own meals. We can book one hotel suite for 5 people, instead of two rooms for 5 people in our family (two adults and three teenagers). In addition, this hotel serves a very good complimentary buffet breakfast (muffins, cereal, biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, waffles, toast, coffee, juice, sausages, etc.). With our family, this is a bargain indeed.

We can bring our dog for an extra charge of $50, which is a better rate than a kennel and our old dog is much happier.

That is my tip. Although it is not the cheapest way to go, we saved $60 on our hotel room, get a free breakfast for essentially 5 adults, and pay a cheaper rate than a kennel.

Lowering the Interest Rate on a Student Loan

I am trying to help my daughter who has come down with a medical condition preventing her from working regularly to pay off a huge old student loan. I didn't realize she still owes over $40,000 after eight years, mainly because of high interest rates. Is there anyway to get this reduced to a reasonable amount when the loan has been sold off two or three times by the original and subsequent lender?

Thank you for your assistance, we really need help.

My friend says there is a punch that uses the special candy cane stick ice cream from Blue Bunny that comes out only this time of year. Does anybody have the recipe? I want to use it for Thanksgiving. It will be my first time hosting Thanksgiving for my family!

Selling Collectible Dolls

Calling all doll collectors! Where do doll collectors congregate and/or search for dolls to add to their collections? I have a small collection of dolls that I wish to sell. I have heard a number of horror stories from inexperienced folks who believe that they were ripped off by online auctions or dealers.

As I am in serious need of extra money and as I am in search of someone who will love and cherish the dolls my mother gave me (she always said that they were an investment and that I should take good care of them--Mom was right). I would like to know how to connect with serious, thoughtful collectors who value dolls beyond any blue book listing.

Online research has only gone so far and the ThriftyFun people have come through for me in the past so... if you have any information to offer I hope you share it with me! I will be most appreciative of any and all responses to my request and I will gladly do the same for you if I can be of help regarding your requests.

Thanks everyone.

Making Drinking Glasses From Glass Bottles

I heard or read somewhere that you can make your own drinking glasses out of glass water bottles, wine bottles, or beer bottles. Has anyone tried this? I was always afraid to do it as it sounds a little dangerous. As in, maybe safety goggles aren't enough. They said all you have to do is file a little groove around the circumference of the bottle at the height you wish the glass to be and then wrap that groove with a string that's been soaked in kerosene.

So, if you've tried this:

1. What do you use to initially file the glass?

2. How do you minimize the danger of flying glass, etc.?

3. If there are sharp edges afterwards what would you use to file down the rim?

4. Would a glass cutter work instead?

Housetraining a Puppy

I have just the cutest baby girl Boxer, her name is Krissy. She's 12 weeks old. I am having the HUGEST problem of house breaking her. I know Boxers are very smart dogs and learn very quickly. I was house sitting another dog when I got her and this other dog, in her jealousy, has taught my Krissy bad habits of pooping on the floor.

I have the puppy training pads in areas where the poop is more often, the laundry room is covered in tarp. The whole family takes part in taking Krissy outside to potty, and she's good at peeing, but then she comes in the house and poops. She gets so cold and shivers outside and she wants back in the house.

We started putting her on 30 minute intervals (when she's awake) and then taking her outside to potty. When she does, we give her treats and tell her what a good girl she is for going outside but she won't poop outside. If anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear them.

Thank you!

Bartering Advice

Does anyone have any experience in bartering? I would like to exchange my writing experience and skills for either goods or services but I am not sure as the best way to proceed. Can anyone tell me how they started to practice bartering? I want to know both the upside and downside of bartering experiences, too. I have found that there is much to be gained by asking people with experience in any new walk of life that I would like to try. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thank you for your generosity!

Waterproof Chaise for a Deck

I recently saw an advertisement for a wonderful chaise for a deck. It was round and you lay on it in the summer time. I know summer is a long way off but I would like to plan ahead and make one of these for next year. The one I saw cost in the vicinity of $8,000.00 which is a bit 'over budget'. Any ideas? It has to be waterproof as well.

Researching and Selling Antique Furniture

I have a wonderful oak dresser that I wish to sell and I need some input from all experienced furniture buyers and sellers. This dresser has a mark on the back that indicates where it was purchased. I have found the name of the merchant in an 1840 directory (Brooklyn). As I live in NYC I am wondering if there is a way I can use the information to research the background of the dresser.

It would be great if I could realize the best price on the piece as I am hoping to finance my redecorating plans through the selling of certain items. All ideas, info and experiences are welcome!

Quick Fruit Cobbler Recipe

My grandmother used to "whip up" a fruit cobbler (of sorts) that was awesome. It was some sort of dough, put on a jelly roll pan, she then would cut apples, or blueberries, peaches, etc. and layer it on top of the dough. Sprinkle with some cinnamon and sugar and then bake it. The dough was about 1/2" thick. We would cut them into "bars" and devoured them, pan after pan! It was always quick to make with very few ingredients. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks! Missing my Gramma in PA!

It's will be my daughter's golden birthday, she's turning 7 on Dec 7th. I'm completely clueless on what I should do or what I should plan. I want it to be her day. Battery Basics - Reduce, Recharge and Recycle!
By Ellen Brown

Household batteries include both single-use and rechargeable dry cell batteries used to power toys, cameras, radios, flashlights, hearing aids, and many other portable products. Nearly all households produce waste batteries, in fact Americans use and discard about 3 billion batteries every year. That adds up to 125,000 tons of battery garbage. This waste may contain heavy metals that can find their way into the environment if the batteries are not disposed of properly. By reducing battery use, recharging reusable batteries, and recycling, you can cut down on the effect your battery use has on the environment.
