Craft: Red Hat Lamp

I went to my local favorite thrift store shopping and picked up this lamp. The shade was already shaped like a hat. I painted the shade red and trimmed it with some red and purple feather boas. I put 3 silk flowers around the top of the hat and one at the bottom. It was given away for the door prize at my local Red Hat group on National Red Hat day.

Wildlife: Rose Breasted Grosbeak

I was standing at my patio door trying to get a picture of a Baltimore Oriole that I could hear in my backyard when this little guy landed on the back of one of my patio chairs. This is a Rose Breasted Grosbeak.

Today's Tips:

Reusing Plastic Soap Dispensers

After being married for 54 years, I finally decided I needed some "store bought" liquid soap dispensers. I found some attractive ones for my master bath at Target.

I have several of the store brand bottles which I am way too stingy to throw away, so I am going to use them for shower gel and shampoo. This will eliminate over use and spilling thereby making the bottles last longer. So I am really frugal in my heart even though I get nutty at times.

Use Plastic Tablecloth Under a Decorative Tablecloth

I put a cheap plain white flannel back plastic table cloth over my dining room table then put my nice decorative table cloth over it. The white cover does not show, but protects my table from spills and warm items. Plain white flannel back plastic clothes are hard to find. I usually find them at Dollar General store.

Organize With 5 Gallon Plastic Buckets

Home and especially garage organization can be as short as a trip to your local fast food restaurant. 5 gallon pickle buckets have a huge list of uses: fishing, gardening, storage, etc. They are usually free, and you are doing the green thing by not filling the dump.

Carry Wipes in Your Pocketbook

Just a quick tip for the ladies. When you are out and about make sure you carry flushable wipes in your pocketbook. You never know when you'll have to "go" and the restroom have no toilet paper. It's a life saver!

Distract Bees With a Sugar Soda Jug

The bees were so bad, I could not sit on my front porch. A friend of ours gave us this contraption that was a plastic bottle with holes in it, that you hung on a hook. You boil 1 cup sugar and 4 cups water, let cool, then pour the water 1/3 from the bottom.

Well, you could make the same thing from a soda jug. Fill with the water and make holes around the bottle the size of a nickle. Set it away from where you are sitting and watch. The bees and wasps just love the sweet nectar, and they won't bother you.

Making Homemade Tear-Off Notepads

I volunteer every week at my son's school and I noticed that they recycle their throw away paper. I needed some scratch paper so I dug through the scrap paper recycle bin to use some. I then grabbed a whole bunch of scrap paper that was printed on just one side and cut them all to scrap paper pad size with the paper cutter.

I then used a red rubber adhesive. I found out it was a small cheap bottle of water soluble red goo that was applied with a paint brush to coat one side of the pad. I got it at the office supply store. Once the adhesive was dried the paper pad was ready to use with easily tear off paper depending on how neatly someone does it.

Now my son's school uses my newly create paper pads in the school's office everyday.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

Linda said: The preacher came to call the other day. He said at my age I should be thinking of the hereafter. I told him, "Oh I do it all the time. No matter where I am, in the parlor, upstairs, in the kitchen, or down in the basement, I ask myself, "Now, what am I here after?"

Removing Burns from Stainless Steel Pan

I have a question about cleaning a stainless steel pan: I was heating a thin layer of olive oil in my big frying pan when I got distracted. The oil ended up burning and now my pan has a brownish haze on the bottom which scouring pads, dish soap, dishwasher, and TSP won't remove.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Troubleshooting Pool's Suction Vacuum

My pool filter seems to be working fine, but when I plug my suction vacuum into it the filter pressure gets really high and I lose water pressure. My local pool store told me I should be vacuuming on the waste setting, but this just shoots water out into my yard. What am I doing wrong?

Slugs and Lung Worms in Dogs

We have been getting slugs for about 2 years. We wake up in the morning and see slug trails everywhere, but don't see the slug. The only time we see them is on a evening.

My mum who lives next door has them as well, she's even found them in the fridge. The thing that's causing concern is I was reading a article about Lung worm at the vet. I have 4 dogs: it said dogs can catch lung worm from eating slugs or digesting their slug slim. It worries me a lot, has anybody else the same concerns?

Is there a way that I can use something safely to elevate it a bit so it doesn't sit on the turntable? It did not come with a rack like some microwaves do. Thanks.
