Over Easy Eggs Without Flipping

If you like over easy eggs, but hate to flip them, here's a nice thing I learned while cooking for a living. Have a nice flat pan or a skillet that allows for a flat center. Get a squirt bottle with some water, and a good lid that covers the pan or at least the eggs.

Heat your oil or butter to warm, drop in the eggs and immediately make a circle of water around the edge of the egg(s). Cover and steam them till the yolks are white and not yellow. Voila! You have "Easy without the Over"! N-JOY

Craft Tip: Quilt Binding Without Mitered Corners

How to sew binding on a baby quilt (it could be a big quilt also) without having to bother with doing mitered corners. Mitered corners are hard to get just exactly right and if you are a perfectionist and want it to look just so, then you should try this method.

Gardening: Contain Your Mint

Many plants, especially herbs, are very invasive and will spread and quickly take over your garden. To prevent this, place the plant, like this spearmint, in a container. This mint is planted inside an old ice cream maker. I have a beautiful plant and don't have to worry about it taking over!

In Memory of Kirsty (Lurcher)

Sadly we lost Kirsty to epilepsy when she was just short of her 3rd birthday. She was a lurcher we bought in 1996. She loved to run on the beach and over the dunes. This is her curled up on her own chair! Very relaxed. She was very special to us.

Today's Tips:

"Spring Into Friendship" Dance Theme

A middle school dance idea I used in the spring was a "Spring Into Friendship" dance. It had a sixties appearance. We decorated a gym. Around the gym on the walls were collections of bright color flowers, 36 to 24 inches in diameter with a different color center. They looked like the no slip doilies we used to put in bathtubs, sixtyish. Each flower had a stem with leaves cut out of green paper that reached to the flower.

In between each of the large bouquets of flowers, we had very large silhouettes of young adults hanging out together: shopping, skateboarding, walking, having a picnic, graduates, playing basketball and playing chess. These silhouettes were located on the free clip art web site I found by googling free clip art. I then printed and transferred them onto overhead projector sheets of acetate and enlarged them to 8 feet in height on black roll paper, putting two pieces together for some of the large group silhouettes.

In the center of the long gym wall I placed a large sign with the Spring Into Friendship in black letters on yellow paper - it really popped. We usually set up a snack table and 4 to 5 round tables for kids to sit around. These were decorated in a variety of colors, plastic table cover. I cut out small flowers to sprinkle around the tops of the tables and placed a colored gift bag, different colors, with flowers glued to the outside in the center of the tables. The arrangement coming out of the bag was bright color flowers and rising up from the center. I placed a rectangle of floral green foam in the bag to hold them. Rising up from the flowers was the overhead acetate silhouette stuck on a plastic floral card holder. The only requirement for admission to the dance was they had to come with a friend or group of friends to get in.

Neat Chef Tools on the Cheap

I love to salivate over the goodies in the cooking catalog like Williams-Sonoma, but some of the things are just plain unnecessary, or you can make them yourself. I saw two such things in the latest one, and I've been doing both things for years.

The first one was these little metal rods that you run through the center of potatoes you're going to bake in the (regular) oven. I believe a set of about six was something like $35. I have a couple of really long nails that I bought just for this. I believe I paid about two dollars for them. The principle is right, it helps radiate heat through the spud and speeds up the cooking, but you don't need to buy something special for it. Or you can thread a few on skewers, too.

The other thing was pretty, and a nice thing to have, especially if you host big family meals and like fish, but you can make them yourself for nearly nothing. If you order fish in an upscale restaurant, they'll often give you half a lemon to squeeze over it, wrapped in green nylon net. It looks pretty and keeps the seeds from squeezing out onto your fish. This catalog was selling six or eight squares of green nylon net to wrap around your lemon halves for a hideous price like $20. But nylon net costs nearly nothing, and is 72 inches wide! You can make a ton of these for just pennies.

I once found myself stranded with corn-on-the-cob, but no holders, so I stabbed in some golf tees, and they worked great - cute, too.

And those stainless steel rods they sell for removing pungent smells from the hands, you don't need one. Just use a stainless steel spoon, it really does work!

Use Antbacterial Gel in Your Bathroom

Our house is 100 years old and any activity on the plumbing affects the water pressure. When someone is in the shower, it is a big problem. I have added anti-bacterial gel next to the sink so if you need to "wash" your hands, the person in the shower doesn't get scalded.

Use Duvets to Pad Older Mattresses

My mum gave me this idea. I have 5 children and 4 of them were sleeping on hard mattresses where you could feel the springs. Over the years I have accumulated double duvets (not sure if you call them the same in the US, perhaps divans? Any way the things you put covers on to sleep under, you know what I mean!)

As I couldn't afford to replace the mattresses, my mum suggested I fold the double duvets in two and lay them over each mattress (in effect a nice thick mattress topper), then make the beds as usual. It has worked a treat, no expense, just used stuff I had stored in the roof . My kids all get a better night sleep now!

Product Review: Save-A-Blade

Product: Save a Blade Automatic Razor Sharpener

Manufacturer: Exceptional Products, Inc.

Cost: $20-$25

My husband uses the Mach III razor and razorblades. If you buy this product you know they are super expensive to replace. ($11.00) for 3 razorblades at Wal-Mart.

We watched the infomercial on TV that showed how you can re-sharpen your razor blades. What the heck; we bought the product, read the instructions and my husband set out to sharpen his blades. They suggest using the Save-A-Blade to keep new blades sharp but since we had a drawer full of used blades we decided to see if we could sharpen those too and if they would actually work and not nick dh's face.

4 stars for this product! It kept his new blades sharp and sharpened the old ones too. We've been using this for a month now and it's still worth the $25 we paid for it.

Note: You cannot use this for razorblades that have retention wires over the blades.

Cola as Cheap Steak Marinade

My husband is a retired butcher and I am certified in Culinary Arts. Marinades are expensive. Try soaking your beef steak or roast in Cola or Dr. Thunder from Walmart. Cover for 24 hrs. Then season and cook.

Unbelievably tender!

Serving Liver To Kids

When my 3 daughters were small, they refused to eat liver until I found a way to please them. I cut the beef liver into serving pieces, dipped each piece into Bisquick, then milk and then Bisquick again. I then fried them in a small amount of oil. They loved liver after that.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

Following an especially angry argument, Mr. and Mrs. Smith went to bed not speaking to each other. Needing to arise early the following morning, Mr. Smith left a note on his wife's bedside table that said "Wake me at six."

An exasperated Mr. Smith awoke at ten the following morning and rolled stiffly out of bed to see a note on his bedside table:

"It's six, you lazy bum! Get out of bed!"

Housebreaking Older Dogs

I have three dogs. The one that is just over two years is a male. The one that is just under two years is a female. I also have a another male who is just 8 months, their puppy. The oldest male is completely house broken, the other two are not at all.

They get three walks a day each between 30 minutes and a hour long at the same time every day, and they always go while they are out. They never go in the house while I'm there. But every day while I am at work and every night while I sleep they go in the house.

I understand that the puppy might still be too young to wait that long but, my female is too old to not be house broken. My floor is being destroyed and I am losing my mind. I can not punish them because I never catch them in the act and even if I do they just start going some where else. People tell me what am I doing wrong?

Putting Hair in a Ponytail

Would someone please give me instructions on how to make an ordinary ponytail? I have shoulder-length fine hair. When I make a ponytail to keep it out of my face it looks like I've had an eyebrow lift! Nothing but the aging hipster look, instead of something softer looking for my hair above the ponytail. Instead of a flat, pulled-back cap, I'd like to have a bit more of a softer look framing my face. Thank you all.

Aggressive German Shepherd Behavior

I bought a German Shepherd puppy 2 years ago for my daughter's 8th grade graduation present. Just yesterday, Rocky, started to growl at her. I quickly made attempts to correct the dog saying, " no, no growling". I returned him to his crate for time outs. He continues to do it and the last time he showed his teeth. I have had shepherds for years and never seen this happen. If anyone has ideas on how to correct this please let me know. Thank you and have a wonderful day.

Grocery Bag Dog Leash

I'm making a leash from grocery bags. After you get the bags all cut down the sides and glued to each other, you then loop the bag-cords together by laying them out next to each other, grabbing them in the middle (now making 4 bag-lengths), and then looping them around a swivel hook. Then you make square knots.

My problem is that 2 of the lengths come out lots longer than the other 2. The middle lengths are much longer than the 2 outside lengths. Is this right? I think I'm making the knots correctly, they look great, but I was told to start with 2 cords the same length. What am I doing wrong, or is this correct?

Also, aside from making oatmeal for my family, adding oatmeal to meatloaf, and making oatmeal cookies, do you have any other suggestions for using it? Thanks for any suggestions you have.

Will A Hybrid Save You Money?
By Kelly Ann Butterbaugh

"Will a hybrid save me money?" Wouldn't it be great if there was a definitive answer to that question? Unfortunately, and despite what a showroom salesman will tell you, there is no clear answer.
