In a large pot, place the cubed potatoes, cabbage, carrots and add enough water until everything in the pot is covered. Cook over medium heat for about 45 minutes. Add the kielbasa and cook for an additional 15 minutes. Salt and pepper and butter to taste.
This is great. Our family makes it in an oven dish, no carrots, add sliced onions. and one small can sauerkraut as well as thinly sliced cabbage with the potatoes and sliced kielbasa, all alternately layered with salt and pepper and a few tablespoons of water . Cover with foil and bake about 45 minutes or until potatoes are done. I learned to cook it in a pot, and was talking about it and someone had learned to do it in baking pan so daugher, daughter in law and myself tinkered until we got the recipe right to suit us all.
Any variation is good. We drain and slightly rinse the sauerkraut.

this is also good with cooked noodles added when the Kiebasa and Cabbage is done. The noodles work with any kind of sausage.
