Putting Tiling Over Laminate Countertop? |
|

I saw the discussion a few weeks ago about painting over laminate, and it got me wondering about tiling over laminate countertops. Will the adhesive stick if you sand the countertops?

On Designed to Sell Lisa Laporta had her guys put tile in a bathroom around a sunken tub. They put it over the laminate. Do you think a designer on TV would do something that wouldn't last? I don't think she would stake her reputation on something like tiling so I say sand it a bit and tile as usual, if she can do it so can we.

Has anyone tiled over tile? I have 12" marble fireplace surround tiles that I want to tile over with 12" sheets of small glass tiles. Is this doable and, if it is, is there a special preparation for the marble tiles to ensure that the glass tiles are tightly bonded? Appreciate any help on this. Thanks.

What about tiling over that kind of bathroom counter which looks like white marble but is all one piece so you can't lift out the sink?
My boyfriend says it won't work but I want to try mosaic. The faucets are those creepy "pool up water behind faucet" faucets and I'd like to correct this in the process. Thanks.

I too am in the process of tiling over laminate. My countertop laminate was very solidly glued because the previous owners had redone the counters only 5 years ago. Only problem is that they put hot pots and scouring powder all over the laminate and it looked awful. I used a motified mortar and pre-sanded the laminate. After cleaning the laminate well I applied the mortar. I'm a great chance taker so I don't know how this will hold up over the long run. I'm including a picture of the finished breakfast bar because I'm still working on the rest of the countertops.

Don't put anything on top of laminate tops. If the laminate tops ever come detached from the plywood (the actual counter top), then the tile will be also. If you put down ceramic, you especially will be into a lot of time and effort that has went down the drain. The ceramic won't come apart from the laminate, due to the thin set, but the laminate can come apart from the wood!

I was playing on HGTV website and found that you can apply adhesive to the countertop, then a sheet of special stuff that the tile adhesive and tiles will stick to,its all detailed on that web site.Hope that helps.

I realize that some of the posters here put comments on this site some time ago and ay not be around now. We are trying this project with what boils down to an outdated kitchen counter. I'm using 1/4" plywood screwed down over a laminate. My guess is this should be sufficient enough to hold the ceramic tiles for a long time. The tiles and edges are white; we're using a thin set, then planning on grouting with a seal. Any thoughts on whether or not this should work? Thanks in advance.

Thanks Kathy for the link - I was in a tile shop a few weeks back and the fellow there had told me about this process and showed me the material but it is nice to see a demo. Rhonda

It did this about 6 mo ago. I used 12x12 porcelain tiles (.99 each). Here is the process I used-- removed the sink, sand lightly/clean countertop, cut backerboard to fit top (dry fit). place mastic on countertop (per manuf instructions), place backerboard in place (per manuf instructions), using screws for backerboard--screw board in place (per manuf inst), allow to set overnight. Next day, lay tiles as you would normally (allow to set-then grout). For the sink you will need to cut approx 1/4 indents into the old countertop--where the sink mounts (due to backerboard and tile depth). Reinstall sink (per new sink instructions).. This cost me about ($100, less the sink). It is indestructible. You can also run the tile up the wall as a back splash if you like. I have has TONS of compliments on this... OH a final note-- Used black painted trim for the edging (not in pic).. This has proved to not be as duriable as I would like.. May look for some alumn trim.. Good Luck! Any questions-- blue68442 at hotmail . com

It sounds like a risk. Tile thinset is a cementous material that needs a suitable substrate to bond to that is porous enough to maintain that bond. Laminate coutertops are decidely not porous. If you decide to sand, I would sand, and sand, and then when I thought I had sanded enough. I would sand some more.
Since tile is a considerable investment, I would not cut corners. I would get the proper substrate (plywood and backerboard) and do it right the first time. It would be such a shame to spend money on a tile countertop only to have it fall apart.

I have put ceramic tile directly over laminate bathroom counter tops without sanding, and it has lasted and not come loose even with the water , so give it a try, and I'm sure you will enjoy the results for many years.

I bought a house where they had put floor tiles on the kitchen countertops, it looked pretty good until I started cooking and then the tiles around the stove all came off because of the heat. If you use tiles make sure you used ceramic.
