I am entering my last cycle of chemo. My hair fell out right after my 1st treatment. I have been massaging my scalp 2x a day and have already noticed some hair growth. Stay positive and all will be ok. Now if I could lose all the weight I gained.
I am currently starting on my 7 month of chemo. I never lost my hair but it got really thin. I was reading about Head & Shoulders shampoo (the dandruff shampoo) the article said that even if you don't have dandruff that it's good for your scalp because it has zinc it in. I forgot about the article until a friend left some at my house then I started using it. After 1 month my hair is thicker and a little bit longer. This is the only thing that I can contribute to hair growing back while still under chemo. I hope it continues to grow because I don't know when I will be off chemo. I hope some of you find this helpful.
I had chemo therapy for Osteosarcoma & finished my chemo in February. My back of my hair is still longer, about 2.5-3 inches but the top is a little short, but for my make-a-wish I went to Tahiti & snorkeling everyday really made my hair grow. I think it was because of all the sun's vitamin D and the nutrients & minerals in the ocean water, I heard that they worked. My hair grew about half an inch within a week, not over exaggerating either. Another reason for a vacation to French Polynesia :) But remember everyone's different & it just takes time.
I am African American. My hair grew back curly. It has been 4 months. I just shampoo, condition, and mousse. Does anyon have any other tips?
Like Bar 2M, I use horsetail and it made my hair grow. I lost most of my hair through thyroid disease; it fell out in clumps and you could see my scalp. Also made my nails grow faster, but not stronger.
Good luck! Smoochie
First, let me say that I hope you are doing well. Believe it or not, prenatal vitamins work wonders for hair growth. If you are permitted to take them, they have a generic version at Wal-Mart for about $7.00. I used them during my pregnancy. Hope you get the results you are looking for! Take care.
I remember my mother had always had seasonal loss of hair. She said she had lost a great deal of hair when she had a high fever years before I was born.
I found a shampoo at the health food store called Energizer Treatment Shampoo with Jojoba and Vitamin B-5 for her scalp. The vial of jojoba is separate and needs to be mixed in the palm of the hand with the shampoo.
Anyway, the jojoba oil helped her sensitive scalp and the side effect was that it actually seemed to strengthen the hair follicals so she didn't lose hair at the top of her head anymore.
Wish I could tell you how to make it grow faster, but everything I ever read about it says about half an inch per month is the average rate of regrowth. I went through chemo last year for breast cancer, with the last dose in September, and my hair is 3 inches long, just as expected after 6 months. Everyone's body is different of course, just keep up with good nutrition and stay positive as possible (and yes, I know that part is really hard sometimes!). Also, remember to do your research and maybe talk to your doctor before taking nutritional supplements that are not marked with the USP purity designation (verified to make sure that the product and amounts shown on the label are REALLY what's in it) because after some forms of cancer, we've got to be just a bit more careful than the average person might realize. Hang in there, big hugs!
I had chemo which caused me to lose much of my hair. I can't give you any tips for hurrying it along, but I will warn you that when my curly hair grew back in, at first, it was quite straight, and some was grey. My oncologist assured me that both things would not be permanent and he was right. My hair went back to being curly and the grey hair cleared up. I kept believing that my hair was darker than before the chemo, but my husband found a lock of my hair from when we were dating and it is the same shade. Best of luck to you!
I take M S M Capsuls from aloetherapy.com and I noticed that my hair grew much faster, and my nail are much stronger. Good company, I have ordered from them for about 6 years. They give great service and are reasonable.
Well, on average hair grows about 1/2 inch per month; give it a healthy environment by practicing proper nutrition and hydration. Although this will not speed things up the end result will be better. A daily scalp massage as well as a good shampoo and conditioner will marginally speed things up to at least average, if the hair is currently coming back less than 1/2 inch per month. Good luck!
No new hair ideas, but I just wish you the best to get well soon and keep your courage up. Puttin' up a prayer for ya, God bless you, --Kim
Would regrowth at DOUBLE SPEED work? I take a MSM(contains elemental Sulfur) supplement. Helps my hair and nails grow about 2x normal speed. I get mine from the online stores at www.scriptures.cc/3752. They have marvelous products and a no-return money back guarantee if you are unhappy. Good health to you!
This is a wonderful, inexpensive way to improve the circulation on your scalp. After washing your head with a warm washcloth, take olive oil and put just the tinyest bit in the palm of your hand. While your skin is still moist, rub into your scalp. It doesn't smell when you use just a little and it softens dry skin anywhere. Plus the stimulation to your scalp will help nourish those hair folicles.
Prenatal vitamins supposedly work wonders for women's hair. Might be worth a try, but ask your doctor first!
I have been doing chemo for 3 years.........one tip I got from a nurse was to take the herb horsetail - I get it online called "vegetal silica" - it has helped my hair get rid of that straw feeling and also my skin isn't so dry. Plus it grows so fast! You have to look around though because some that I bought was worthless so quality counts.
Just know that it will grow back and you will get your life back!

Not sure on what to get it back sooner, but my mom lost all hers she was 55 yrs. I'm sure age and nutrition as well as menopause plays a role in it, but she felt like eating lots of foods high in iron helped so she ate allot of beans. She really liked pinto beans, plus she said the chemo left an aluminum taste in her mouth causing lots of foods to have no taste and pinto beans and tomatoes she could taste real well. Hers fell out fast but grew back within the year, and actually was a fuller head of hair but was less curly than her natural curly hair. Hope that helped. And God Bless You & I hope your health goes along well.
