I grew up on a strip farm and my grandfather alternted corn and wheat in those strips so as not to deplete the soil of vital nutrients needed for each crop. It made for some fun sledding when you hit those bumps!

Especially on sloping land, strips plowed across the slope, instead of straight down it, help to prevent rain from washing all the dirt off.
