If it is really dirty you can use brick acid and a scrubbing brush. This is best tried in a small area first to watch for adverse reactions. It will fizz on contact with the stone, after the treated area must be rinsed down with lots of clean water. The stone will be slightly chalky afterward and should be sealed with clear stone sealer. This is not recommended for polished or finely carved areas as it is in effect burning off or dissolving some of the stone.I have used this on a riven surfaced Minster Stone Fireplace, it was the only thing which removed the old stains after spending money on various stone cleaning products.
