Tips

Homemade Barbecue Sauce

My husband and I make an easy barbecue sauce (a thin brush-on type, not the thick kind) that is great for summer cookouts. It works good on chicken and pork (esp. ribs!), and you can even use it on steaks. Use the cheapest brands for all the ingredients. Believe me, it tastes better than the store-bought BBQ sauces! Here's how to make it:

In a stainless steel pot, combine:

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup mustard
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 2 cups apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • a liberal dash of hot pepper sauce
  • 2 cups water

Mix and cook all the ingredients about an hr. over low heat. BBQ sauce will be thin, not thick, and can be brushed over grilling meats. Store in refrigerator in a container. Should last at least a month.

OR you can parboil ribs, chicken, etc. IN the sauce, then use the remainder to brush on the cooking meat. However, if you par-cook any meat in the sauce, use it all up immediately on whatever you are cooking . . . once it is "contaminated" by the meat, do not save it.

Enjoy!

Making Homemade Tear-Off Notepads

Recycle scrap paper by cutting it into same size pieces (use a paper cutter), then stack the paper evenly. Tap the top edge that you will glue, to make sure it is as even as possible. Clip with binder clips to hold secure, then using Elmer's Rubber Cement, coat the top edge of your note pad.

I use the spring type binder clips to hold it near the glued part. Once dry, repeat several times until it is quite secure. You can also add a piece of heavy cardboard to the back of the note pad.

The first time it is trial and error until you get the knack.

Make Your Own Seed Tapes

This Is Great For Small Seeds!

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 cup cold water
  • saucepan
  • paper towels
  • scissors
  • ruler
  • pencil
  • plastic freezer bag

Directions

Dissolve cornstarch and water in saucepan

Put pan over heat and stir so mixture wont get lumpy. When the mixture begins to boil and thicken remove from heat and let cool.

Cut paper towels lengthwise in one-inch-wide strips. Using a ruler mark with your pencil the recommended spacing between plants.

When the cornstarch has cooled, spoon into freezer bag. Force the mixture into one corner of the freezer bag & snip the tip. Squeeze the bag to place a dot of cornstarch at every pencil mark on paper towels.

Place your seeds at every dot of cornstarch, let the seed tape dry for an hour or so.

Roll up and store in plastic bag until ready to plant.

When you are ready to plant, cover tape with soil and water thoroughly!

Make Your Own Chalkboard

You can make a chalkboard to fit any size of frame. Just take a thin, smooth board (smooth plywood works well for this), cut to the desired size and paint it with dark primer. Let that dry and spray paint it with chalkboard paint, which you can buy at your local hardware store.

Cheap Bathtub Toys

I have found that bathtub toys for my young children are expensive and don't last very long. So, what I've been doing is saving the plastic coffee containers (new ones from Folgers) in the small and large sizes. My girls love to pour with them, add a little soap to 'make an experiment', put the lid on and shake!

I haven't done this yet, but poking ice pick size holes in the lids would make a fun way to pour the water out. I also save plastic yogurt containers for the same thing. They also make great scoops for water to rinse their heads! This is a 'free' way to make bathtub toys that last a long time, a great way to recycle and you certainly get your money's worth out of coffee!

Make Your Own and Save
By Kelly Ann Butterbaugh

Some products just aren't worth the money consumers pay for brand names and store packaging. Instead, make your own and save money. Here are a few recipes for common household items that can be made for less. In fact, ask the kids to help and make a family activity out of it as well.

Windex Window Cleaner

Avoid the pricey label and make your own window and surface cleaner.
  • 1/2 cup ammonia
  • 1 pint rubbing alcohol
  • 1 tsp. Joy dishwashing soap
Mix all together. Then, add enough water to equal a gallon of the mixture. Store and use.

Playdoh

There are several recipes, but this one is the most popular. Remember to store your finished products in airtight containers for long shelf life. Make the colors match the season and whip up a new batch whenever the original loses its texture.
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbs. oil
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 tbsp. cream of tartar
  • food coloring of choice
Combine ingredients into a saucepan and continually stir while cooking until the dough leaves the side of the pan. Remove from heat and continue stirring until it begins to set. Let cool and store.

Laundry Soap

Create a large batch of this for pennies of what it costs in the store.
  • 5.5 oz. of Fels Naphtha bar soap
  • 4 cups of water
Cook over low heat while stirring. Do not allow it to boil. Transfer it to a large container or bucket and add 3 gallons of hot tap water. Stir until all is dissolved. Then, add 1 cup of washing soda available in the laundry aisle. Mix well. Allow it to set overnight until it becomes gel. Stir it before each use. Approximately _ cup should be used for each load.

Plant Fertilizer

Save on pricey fertilizers by using unflavored Knox instead. It can't be your only source of fertilizer because is lacks several nutrients, but it does contain nitrogen which will give plants the energy they need. Avoid regular gelatins because the sugars in them can harm the plant's water absorption.
