In Memory Of Rosabella (Tortoiseshell)

Rosabella (Rose for short). She was a mixed breed cat with a tortoise shell coat. This is in memory of Rose. She was a stray cat dropped off several years ago and always lived across the road.

She started coming over to see me. I started feeding her and playing with her. She had kittens at our house last summer. This spring she was expecting again and almost ready to give birth. I should have penned her up but didn't.

She has disappeared and I fear the neighbors have shot her. We saw them outside shooting at a black tomcat (her boyfriend) last week. He was running frantically in the back field. She has been gone for over 2 weeks. I fear the worst. We have coyotes around here too but I suspect foal play. This cute picture of her is what I saw each morning when she was waiting for her breakfast.

Daisy Mable (Cairn Terrier Mix)

This is Daisy Mable. She is a cairn terrier mix. I inherited her from a co-worker 8 years ago. She is the first small breed dog that I have owned, but they say "great things come in small packages". She has certainly proved true to the saying. This was taken at a Mardi Gras Parade for dogs called Krewe des Chiens.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Calculate the Best Prices at Supermarkets

When at the supermarket, bring a little notebook with you, and a calculator. Write down all of your regular items (or the price of something that you'd like to buy) and the price per ounce (divide the cost by the total number of ounces in the package) or the price for each item.

While the stores usually show that formula on the tags that show the prices, sometimes it shows "X" cents per ounce on one item, and "Y" per unit on another brand's item (that's why I suggested the calculator).

Get the same information from all the supermarkets that you frequent as well. After a couple of weeks, write out a chart of your regular shopping items down the left side of a page, with the name of the stores across the top. Then put the price into the proper column under each store. You'll quickly see what store gives the best regular prices, and you'll be better able to cash in coupons or take advantage of sales without pulling everything out of the cabinet to see what it usually costs.

Update the lists from time to time, too. I use Miracle Whip. It's usually $3.49 here, which works out to $0.10+ per ounce. I always buy it at a super-discounted grocery store for much less, $0.07 an ounce. When you get a coupon or there's a sale on, make sure that store is offering a better price than you often pay.

I used to take the cost of mileage into account, until a third supermarket opened recently within a 2 miles of my home. Talk about heaven! Soon you'll know exactly where to go to get what, simplifying a shopping trip and getting you the best price on everything.

Use Loose Screws to Clean Hummingbird Feeder

To clean your hummingbird feeder, place some loose screws in the container with some hot soapy water and swirl them around. The screws will break away the grime buildup. Rinse well. Swirl it gently. Don't shake it because the screws might break the glass.

Source: I read this tip in "Country" magazine years ago and use it for cleaning my feeder.

Brewer's Yeast for Fleas

A tip for keeping fleas away from your cats and dogs. Simply put a teaspoon of powdered brewer's yeast into their food. You can also dissolve 1/4 cup brewer's yeast into 1 quart of water. Place in spray bottle and spray pet, combing into fur as you do.

Use Clear Nail Polish to Mend Scarves

Nylon scarves are great for hot weather as they don't crush, but they do snag. So when I got a tear in one of my favorite scarves, I wondered how to mend it, and make sure it wouldn't continue to run. Then I thought, "nylon stockings - nail polish!" So I used clear nail polish to mend the scarf the way one does with stockings, and voila! A nice almost invisible mend.

Use Listerine in a Spray Bottle for Many Uses

I bought a small pump spray and filled it with Listerine. It has so many uses!

  • I use it as a mouth spray to freshen breath. Extremely thrifty instead of buying all the branded mouth sprays. Saves me a fortune.

  • Spray under your arms as an alternative to deodorant - if some of you are sensitive to the chemicals in roll-on and spray deodorants.

  • Spray on kitchen work surfaces to kill all bacteria.

  • Spray a little under your car seat. As the engine warms up it releases a mint fragrance to get rid of stale odours.

  • Spray a little on a tissue and dab onto a developing spot.

  • Use as an anti-bacterial spray for your hands when out and about. In case you sneeze of course, and for general cleanliness (For example- after pushing the supermarket trolley- you have no idea how much bacteria lives on the pushing handle!)

  • Spray in between your toes and leave for a while then dry thoroughly. For the treatment of athlete's foot or overheated feet. If you are on your feet all day do this in your lunch break and it will revive tired feet too.

  • Massage a few sprays into your scalp to treat and prevent dandruff.

  • Spray a little onto a tissue and apply to any insect or bug bite, it lessens the swelling and relieves the itching.
So you see, one product does an awful lot. Now that's what I call being thrifty!

Use Vaseline to Soften a Refrigerator Gasket

If you are having trouble with ice build-up on the heater coils in the back of an older fridge and are having to go through the lengthy process of removing the food and shelves to defrost with a hair dryer -- a little Vaseline may be all you need!

It turns out that the plastic seal around the edge of the door loses its elasticity over time and so may not be sealing as tightly. I got a tip from a repairman that simply rubbing the seal with petroleum jelly will help soften it up. It completely eliminated the problem for me!

Tiny Brown Flying Insects

I too, have been having trouble with the little brown flying bugs in my house. Recently, I purchased a new refrigerator. When we removed my old one, I am embarrassed to say, that the back was full of dust and it was damp. The tray underneath looked to have green stuff growing in it. Since removing the old refrigerator, my bug problem has disappeared. We know these "beetle" type bugs like water and moisture. Make sure to look for any source that is wet.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

A lady came to the hospital to visit a friend. She had not been in a hospital for several years and felt very ignorant about all the new technology. A technician followed her onto the elevator, wheeling a large, intimidating looking machine with tubes and wires and dials.

"Boy, would I hate to be hooked up to that thing," she said.

"So would I," replied the technician.

"It's a floor-cleaning machine."

Preventing Jeans from Stretching

How do you stop excessive fabric stretching? My new jeans stretch so much that in about an hour I need a belt or suspenders to keep them on. Any ideas on how to fix fabric so that it doesn't stretch so much or so quickly? They are Levi's, 99% cotton and 1% Lycra Spandex.

Jeans Getting Wrinkled in the Dryer

Anytime I put my boyfriend's jeans in the dryer, no matter how small the load, the jeans always come out of the dryer horribly wrinkled. I have tried taking the jeans out and folding them slightly and putting them back in but the wrinkles are still there. I have tried everything, the only thing that works is putting the jeans in the dryer alone, but I don't want to use the extra electric for 5 pairs of jeans. Help!

Just installed new dark oak coloured laminate flooring. Unfortunately it shows up every mark, footprints, paw marks, water stains, etc. It is driving me daft already. I wish I hadn't gotten this colour.

Graduation Thank You Note Ideas

I just had a graduation party with a library/book theme, since I recently received my Master of Library Science. I carried the theme the whole way through with a date due card as my invitation, stacks of books as centerpieces, a cake in the shape of a book and bookmarks as favors.

Everything went very well, but now I am stuck on what to use for a thank you card. I want my thank you cards to have the book/library theme, but I can not think of anything unique. Please help. I appreciate any ideas you may have. Thank you.

Covering Glass on Doors

My sister's home has a double front door with glass in the upper halves, leading into the great room. The back of the great room is all windows and french doors. Therefore, at night you can see through the whole house. She wants to cover the front door glass but cannot drill holes in the doors or use anything that will stick to the wood (so says my brother-in-law). There is no room for those tension rods inside the glass section. What in the world can I suggest to her to use?

Keeping a House Organized While Renovating

My hubby and I have inherited his grandmother's house. It is a lovely house, rather small but manageable. However, each and every room needs to be reconstructed then remodeled, from the floors being torn up to the ceilings being reconstructed in each room. Since we can't do this all at once, we are having to do this a little at a time.

What advice do you have for keeping the house clean and organized? We have no pantries or no closets. I do have some plastic shelves I've purchased along with totes. So everything is "out in the open" for the most part.

If this were you and your situation, how would you deal with this on a daily basis to try and keep your house manageable and clean? I haven't pulled out my hair just yet, but I did find a few grays. Thanks for any advice in advance!

What is this Song? "The Lightning Express"

My mother used to sing me a song when I was a child, 50 years ago. The song was about a little boy traveling on a train to visit his mother but doesn't have the fare. A couple of lines are, "Please, Mr Conductor, don't put me off the train. The dearest friend I have in the world is waiting for me in vain. She is apt to die any moment and may not live through the day. " Well , that's it.

As a child I might have gotten a couple of words wrong and it may have been a young man not a child. Please help me to remember this song. My mother died and as always there are questions we would like answers to. I hope you can help me with this one. It means a lot to me. Thanks. GailDarlene
