Today's Tips

Purell Hand Sanitizer in Flu Season

Since the cold/flu season is upon us now, I would like to share a tip that I have used for several years. I buy the 0.5 fl. Oz. bottles of Purell Hand Sanitizer. I carry one in my purse, have several in my truck, and keep one in my pocket for times I don't have my purse. They are very handy for children and teens to carry with them to school or trips to the mall. You don't need water or a tissue for drying your hands. They come in packages of six or eight and can be bought at Wal-Mart, Target, drug stores or your grocery in the hand soap section. When in public I always open the door after washing my hands with paper towels if they have them, if not, sneak a few pieces of toilet tissue.

Cleaning Permanent Ink Of A Dry Erase Board

To clean dry erase boards with an accidental permanent marker mark, buy the CHEAPEST hairspray you can find and simply spray and wipe. The older type hairspray such as: aqua-net works best.

Gift Box Idea - Empty Chocolate Boxes (IE: Russell Stovers Candies)

I usually get theses boxes of chocolates on Valentine Day, Mother's Day and Birthday. Needless to say, they are empty when I do the re-decorating. LOL

I re-cover the outside top of box with any paper. My choice is usually plain white paper, then I cut out pretty pictures from Greeting Cards, arrange and glue them on the top.

I use only the single layer boxes. The inside compartment, I glue down to inside bottom part of box to keep it from slipping or tipping out. The individual compartments are just right for small objects of your choice.

I made several of these, for my jewelry, crafting friends. They thought it was a great way to sort and keep their small beads sequins: googly eyes for dolls, animals and so on.

Replace the top and cushioning paper from inside. You have a safe storage place.

I also cut a nice saying from a greeting card, or one of my own sentiments and glue it to inside top. That way, every time they open it, they are reminded of our friendship.

Umm Umm Good! Pet Stew and Pet Food Stretcher

When I peel my veggies, I microwave the skins and any good parts, in microwaveable bowl. Use just enough water to cook thoroughly.

To them, I add a SMALL amount of olive oil or cooked fat from meat, for a shiny coat. Since I use the minced garlic in a jar for other cooking ease, I add a small amount of garlic to the cooking liquid and veggies.

I then pour it over the dry pet food and mix together. (If it makes a large batch, put in sealable bag, save in refrigerator and use it for next meals.)

Caution: don't use too much liquid or it will make dry food soggy. Make sure it is cool before serving to your pet!

Pets love it and it is: Umm Umm Good for them.

I Believe In The Four R's

After purchasing items The Four R's are:

1. RE-THINK DIFFERENT USES
2. RE-USE
3. REDUCE WASTE IN LANDFILLS
4. RECYCLE

Most items have more than one use.

Re-use Styrofoam Meat Trays

I save and re-use the styrofoam meat trays for holding a lot of my homemade candy, cookies and goodies, as gifts. Also great for Bake Sales.

I wash the trays in hot water, to which it have added a SMALL amount of Clorox and dish soap.

Rinse thoroughly and let air dry for a day. Store in large plastic bag securely closed, until needed for use. Re-rinse and dry before use.

I wrap the tray entirely with aluminum foil. Arrange the homemade goodies on them. Wrap the entire package with plastic wrap.

Cut a pretty picture from greeting card, scotch tape it to top, add a bow and gift tag.

Makes a very pretty, sturdy, free tray for your home made gifts.

Earrings That Cause Itchy Ears

Some of the earrings I wear have caused my ear lobes to break out, get itchy and turn red. I find that by putting clear nail polish on the backs of those earrings, I am able to still wear the earrings I really like. After some use, I find I need to re-apply the polish. It works great.

Homemade Christmas Cards With Kids Artwork

Last year we made wonderful, meaningful and inexpensive Christmas cards. I saved up my then 2 year olds finger paintings throughout October and November and then cut them into smaller rectangles using a decorative scissors and then glued them to the front of plain cards. You can get a large pack of plain cards and envelopes at Michael's Craft store pretty cheaply. I then let my little girls use a glue stick to put glue and glitter on the fronts. They turned out so cute and so many people commented on how they made them smile.

Make Your Own Reflective Ironing Board Cover

You may or may not have seen those advertisements for reflective ironing board covers that are supposed to cut your ironing time in half because you heat up both sides of the item you are ironing. You can get the same effect for much less than the $40 dollars advertised by covering your ironing board in heavy duty foil, then covering it with your regular ironing board cover. The heat will reflect off the foil and iron the bottom while you are ironing the top of the item you are ironing.

Milk Jugs for Dry Storage

Don't cut up your plastic milk jugs! I wash them out and then use them for storage. It's much easier to pour powdered milk from the plastic jug than the large cardboard boxes and I can see how much I have left. Prevents running out when I need it for a recipe. I also use the jugs to store dried beans that I buy in bulk (cheaper), elbow macaroni, sugar, flour, and corn meal.. The handle really makes the jobs easier.

Cheap Magazine Subscriptions on Ebay

Do you love a magazine, but not the price of the subscription? Do you love to give magazine subscriptions for gifts, but can't afford it? Here's a GREAT tip. You can find many, many, many different magazine subscriptions at http://www.ebay.com

They are direct from the publisher and very cheap. I recently got a 4 year subscription for my sis-in-law to "Child" magazine for $4.00. I got 3 years each of "Weight Watchers" and "Shape" for only $7. It is incredible. I have been purchasing magazine subscriptions from eBay for almost 5 years now, and have never had a problem. I will NEVER pay regular subscription price again! :)
Enjoy!

Make Your Own Hershey Kisses with a Funnel

Ingredients:

Mini Marshmallows
Chocolate

Directions:

Put the mini marshmallow in the hole of the funnel. Melt chocolate in the microwave for approximately 3 minutes, stopping 1/2 way to stir the chocolate. Be careful not to burn it. Spray the funnel with Pam or your favorite cooking spray while the chocolate is melting. Once the chocolate is melted pour into the funnel. Place the funnel in a cup and put it in the freezer to harden. Once the chocolate is hardened remove it from the funnel and wrap in aluminum foil. At this time you can add your own tag on white paper to stick out of the top.

You can vary this recipe by using white chocolate, adding peanut butter half way through then pour more chocolate on top, use butterscotch chips instead of chocolate, the possibilities are endless.

Great gift idea for Christmas, Birthdays or Valentines.

Using Old Eyeglass Cases to Hold Your Cell Phone

If you have an old eyeglass case (the type that men use with a clip on one side with the top of it open for the eyeglasses to slip in) you can use it to slip on your belt and hold your cell phone in when you are out shopping or walking. This is a lot cheaper than buying a new cell phone carrier! Plus you can decorate yours to suit your personality! Use paint, ribbons buttons, pins etc.

Keep Cats Out Of The Garden

Cats always love to get into my garden even though I've fenced it to keep my dog out. Over the summer, whenever a cat came into my garden, I would turn the hose on it with the water on full force. After two or three times, the cats stopped coming in.

Keep Cats Out of the Planters

To help keep cats out of flower boxes between blooms, save your rose branch cuttings and stick them in the box soil straight up (small branches, please). Otherwise the cats push them out of the way if they are laying down. They should eventually get the drift that this box is off limits.

Newspaper for Free Gift Wrap

We subscribe and take the weekend issues of the newspaper.

I always save the Front Page, Sports Pages, colorful ads for different items and the comic pages out of about a dozen issues. I then use them to wrap gifts in the pages of my choice.

On the Front Page or Sports Page, I take a thick Red Mark-A-Lot and print in huge letters: "Have you read the news?" or "EXTRA, EXTRA!!! READ ALL ABOUT IT!"

For the males: men's fashions, colorful tools and tire ad pages are great wrapping paper.

Women get the colorful fashion, gadget, linen, furniture, jewelry and kitchenware.

For girls I use girl's toys, computer, stereo, music DVD's makeup, funky jewelry or girls fashion pages.

Then for the kiddos and who doesn't have a lot kid inside of them? LOL I wrap the gifts in the comic section. Paste a huge white gift tag with the saying: "You are so Funny", "You make me laugh", "You are the biggest comic in the world." You get the idea. Anything you want to say.

I said it was free gift paper and it is if you don't count the cost of subscribing. BUT hey, it goes the extra mile for you and the "boughten" kind is more expensive!

Fabric Softener Sheet Ant Deterrent

Did you know that bounty fabric softener sheets is a great ant deterrent? We put them in our RV food cabinets and also at home. Ants will not come into any cabinet that has a dryer sheet in it (and it keeps them fresh smelling!)

Mashed Potato Doughnuts

Here's a delicious way to use leftover mashed potatoes.

2 cups sugar, divided
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup butter or margarine, softened
1 cup cold mashed potatoes
2 eggs, beaten
2/3 cup milk
4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Shortening or oil for deep-fat frying

In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup sugar, salt, nutmeg, vanilla and butter. Add potatoes; mix well. Add eggs and milk; mix well. Stir in the flour and baking powder. Chill thoroughly. On a lightly floured board, roll out half the dough to 1/2-in. thickness. Cut into 4-in. x 1 1/2-in. strips; roll in flour and tie into knots. Preheat shortening or oil to 375*; fry doughnuts until golden on both sides, turning with a slotted spoon. Drain on paper towels. Repeat until all doughnuts are fried. Combine remaining sugar and cinnamon; roll the warm doughnuts in mixture. Serve immediately. Yield: about 1 1/2 dozen.
