Save Gas By Shopping Local

Eight years ago we retired to a tiny town with a small local grocery store. The prices were high and the produce was poor quality, so we developed the habit of checking the weekly ads and doing most of our shopping at the supermarket 20 miles away.

Recently, with the rise in gas prices, I've begun to rethink this practice. I ask myself, "Am I really going to save substantially more than $8 by making this trip? Is there anything I actually need, THIS WEEK, that I can't get locally?" The answer is usually no to both, so I'm doing a lot more shopping at our local grocery store. The produce has improved some since we moved here, and the meat is of exceptional quality; and besides, we're supporting a local business, and keeping the sales tax here at home!
