Maggie (Cairn Terrier) and Pancho (Tiger Cat)

Maggie is a Cairn terrier and is 8. We got her as a puppy from a breeder. Pancho is a 1 year old tiger cat from the humane society, two weeks ago.

She likes to catch a ball in her mouth and the cat likes to play with his food. They are getting along great and we are grateful for that.

Nest Items To Fit Into Trash Better

Save money and use less trash bags. I try to flatten boxes that cereal, cake mix, crackers etc.comes in. This way I can get more trash in the trash bag before it needs replaced. Small cans can fit inside larger ones to also reduce the space needed. Even plastic gallon jugs can be reduced in size just by taking the lid off and flattening it. The less trash bags you use, the less trips to take it outside too.

Pack Up Artificial Tree With Ornaments On

For those who have bought those little pre-lit artificial Christmas trees and painstakingly decorated them with small ornaments, etc., here's a tip to make it easier for next year, and there after. Don't remove any decorations! Keep them just the way they are, and cover them with a small kitchen trash bag(to keep off the dust). Store them in a safe, out of the way place, and by next Christmas, they'll be ready to go, with just a little fluffing up....

Healthier Living in 2008: Tips For Medication

It's time to clean out your medicine chest. Be ruthless and discard ANY medicine which is:

  • Past it's expiration date (adverse drug reactions is the 5th leading cause of DEATH in the USA)
  • Out of its original packaging and you can't quite remember what it is for
  • Partially used prescriptions for conditions in which the medication is no longer needed
  • Prescriptions not written for you or a family member residing in your household.
Remember to ALWAYS:
  • Complete your antibiotic regimen even if you are feeling better. This will prevent the bacteria from becoming antibiotic resistant
  • Read the package insert when you pickup your prescriptions. You'd be surprised at what new information may be included, especially if you have been taking the drug for awhile!
  • Be very careful about taking OTC (over the counter) drugs in combination with ANY other medicines. Again, read the package insert.
  • ALWAYS Take the correct dose. Even, Tylenol can be lethal in overdoses.
  • Fill all your prescriptions at the same pharmacy. Their computers can usually pickup on dangerous drug combinations.
  • Use the samples given to you by your physician before filling an expensive prescription-in the event you are unable to tolerate the drug or have a reaction to the medication. Ask the pharmacy to HOLD the written prescription so it won't get lost. Then a simple phone call is all that is needed to fill it.
  • Use your pharmacist as a resource-ask them before purchasing OTC medications, about side effects, etc. They are a wealth of information regarding your prescription health.
Be healthier in 2008!

Keep Track Of Guest's Beverage Choices

When preparing for a party - either for a large group or just some friends over for dinner - it is sometimes hard to remember what beverages people enjoy, especially with the huge variety of soft drinks now available.

To keep things straight, we have an index card in our recipe card file that lists people's names and their beverage preference - such as Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi, or decaf coffee, or white wine but not red. That way we are sure all of our guests are looked after and not confused with other family members or friends.

This is also a good place to keep track of any food allergies your friends or family may have, or dietary restrictions.

Coke Cart For Secret Pal

At work we have a Secret Pal. Mine is big into Coke Cola products. This year, I went to the Goodwill and found an old maid's cart with wheels. I sanded (very little) the old paint and rough spots, painted it white (left over-non leaded paint). I then bought coke material and made a mat of the tray and also made napkins and a apron out of the material. On the tray, I put a couple of coke glasses, some chips, dip and a couple of large cokes. She just loves it and so did everyone else. Cost about $20.00 for every thing.

Gift Wrap Storage System

I created a special space for storing tubes of gift wrap and ribbon. I put a shower curtain rod 4 feet up from the floor in my storage closet. Then, using old pantyhose, I put a tube of gift wrap or ribbon in each leg and tie it using ribbon at the top. Then, I hung the pair over a hanger, one tube on each side of the hook of the hanger. When it's time to use the gift wrap, all I have to do is cut the ribbon and slide the tubes out. This saves room for items that need to be stored in boxes.

Determining Fair Market Value for Donations

To help you determine your donations "FAIR MARKET VALUE", Goodwill provides a "Value Guide" and offers average prices in their stores for items in good condition.

**Get a receipt and this can be deducted from your TAXES! You will be surprised how much this adds up!

I usually keep a bin or box and collect items as I go throughout the year. I just love it when it gets full and I have to start another one! I also write down all items I give. This is needed for Tax Verification or for the person doing the Taxes.

This is probably a great incentive for one to clean out the clutter around the House and you can claim it on your Taxes at the end of the year. Individuals with disabilities and other barriers are employed at certain facilities, this helps them as well.

Also this will help the needy as well. What a way to make your Heart-Strings feel Happy! Go Green for the environment as well. Recycle everything!

A great time to shop stores such as Goodwill, Salvation Army, Valley Rescue Mission, etc. is after Christmas.

Stores such as Target, etc. Donate items as well to these stores in great or new condition.

Whenever I got to Town, I start packing up my truck and take a load of goodies to one of the Donation Centers.

Here is the website I visited with a list of items that give you the prices for FAIR MARKET VALUE...

There are many Donation Outlets to serve your community.

Masking Tape for Garage Sale Pricing

Use small pieces of masking tape and mark them with pen or permanent marker to price items in your yard or garage sale. It's much cheaper to buy a roll of masking tape, than to buy packages of florescent dot stickers or the preprinted pricing stickers. The roll of masking tape will last a long time, and can be used for many other reasons in your household.

Uses for Parmesan Cheese Containers

Save those bottles that the parmesan cheese comes in and reuse them for your own spice mixes and baking soda or whatever else you want. It has a great lid to get the spoon in and leveled off or just use the sprinkle side!

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

At a dinner party, one of the guests, an obnoxiously loud young man, tried to make clever remarks about everyone and everything. He was served a piece of meat, and as he picked it up with his fork, he held it up and smirked: "Is this pig?"

Another guest, sitting opposite, asked quietly: "To which end of the fork are you referring?"

Color Choice to Make Kitchen More Modern

I am in the process of renovating my kitchen and need some advice. I've already purchased the cabinets. There's a dark grey-brown grain that runs through them. My dilemma is this: I adore the cabinets, but I'm having a hard time coming up with a granite counter top/tile floor/wall color combo that will make them look more modern. I don't want white walls. Any ideas?

My appliances are stainless and black. The kitchen is not terribly large and the one window faces a brick wall a few feet away, so there will be little natural light. I have pot lights in the ceiling, one main center light, and under-cabinet LED lighting. Also, I am limited in my granite choices to the cheapest ones, so I'm leaning towards something black(ish) with flecks of green or maybe brown.

Getting Rid of Weeds with Salt

I have a large area (about 5 acres) that is overgrown with huge (12' +) wild marijuana weeds (from WWII days) and an overabundance of sticker bushes. This area is where my horse lives. I have heard of using rock salt and water to kill these nasty weeds. Is this safe for my horse and what is the quantity of water to salt? Does anyone know?

Skunk Living in Backyard

I am fairly sure that a skunk has taken up residence in the one corner of our back yard. Last night it growled at me when I was out with our little toy fox terrier. Since the location is only about 30 feet from the back door, which we use to enter and exit the house, it is not possible to just ignore it.

I have smelled it's warnings many times. I think it burrowed into the ground in that corner as I have tried looking but do not want to get too close. Does anyone have any ideas as how I can encourage it to move?

Feathers Coming Out of Down Jacket

I just purchased a down-filled jacket, on sale, for the price of $9.00! It's obviously not top quality, but for $9.00, why not, right? Well, I wore it to church last night, and when I took it off, my black shirt was COVERED in down feathers! (I see why it was so cheap!) Which leads to my question, Any ideas what I can do to stop the feathers from coming through the lining? For $9.00 I'll keep it, but it would be nice to find a solution.

Candy Stain on Velvet Comforter

We have what looks like a sugary residue on our new velvet comforter. Our guests' children stayed there over Christmas and we think they had candy on it. The areas where the stains are are stiff and a little shiny on the nap of the velvet. We took it to the dry cleaners who would send it out. They were unable to mark it with tape on the velvet but told us they would have the company check it out.

It came back the same way so no way of telling if they did check it out and were unable to take out the stain (although there was no note stating that). I think they just thought it was general dry cleaning and didn't know to attempt to remove any stains. Any ideas how to remove this sugary stain without hurting the velvet?

Trouble Using Knifty Knitter

I just bought the Knifty Knitter at Walmart. I cant get the tension right, each time I loop around the pegs its too tight to work off,or its so loose that it doesn't make a true stitch, I crochet and wanted to try this, but right now I`m disgusted. Also the yarn around the outside peg gets in the way. Does it mean that after two loops on the hook, you begin to work the loops off? Is there never more than 2 loops on the pegs? I see people having trouble taking their work off the loom, is this going to be a problem too?

The dog vomited on a throw pillow. I washed it and the darn thing spilled some stuffing out into the washer and generally became very lumpy. It's time to replace them anyway. What do you suggest for throw pillows that are machine washable? I would like them to be dog proof and will get a lot of human use. I don't sew very well, and would rather purchase already made . I will sew if I have to. I also need suggestions as to interior and exterior fiber and stuffing content.
