Pink and Pearls Necklace
Glass pink beads mixed with pearls make this a beautiful necklace!
Approximate Time 1 hour
Supplies:
- Pink beads
- pearls
- seed beads
- metal wire (or elastic or even fishing line)
I bought the pink beads from Wal-Mart (craft section). The pearls came from a yard sale and the metal wire came from another craft project. I have used elastic for my necklaces and bracelets, and have used fishing line. If you use fishing line, you will need the ends to put the necklace together. You can get those for a small pack for under a dollar at Wal-Mart as well.
Instructions:
- String 3 pearls
- String a seed bead
- String a large pink bead
- String another seed bead
- String 3 pearls
- String a seed bead
- String a small pink bead
- String a seed bead
- Repeat all
The only measuring I do is when I get close to the end. I wrap it around my neck to see how it's going to look and feel. When I'm happy with it, that's how long it is.

Keeping Mini Roses Alive
In the past I have received mini roses and have always had them die, no matter how tenderly cared for them. This last one I got as a gift I decided to plant outside, and it has flourished and grown very fast. I put it in the sun area. So, if you have bad luck with these pretty mini roses, try placing them outside.

Make Your Own Bag Holder
Bag holder for picking up litter!
To make the holder you need:
- 36" X 1/4 inch aluminum rod
- 37" X 1/4 inch vinyl tubing
- 4 Mini Size Heavy-Duty Metal Spring Clamps
We found all of these materials at Home Depot.
Instructions for making the bag holder:
Insert the aluminum rod into the vinyl tubing. A quick way to do this is with the use of an air compressor. Blow air into the tubing while someone else pushes the rod into the tubing. Don't turn the rod loose though as it will shoot out like an arrow. Press the rod up into the tubing about 1/2 inch so the tubing will overlap the sharp ends of the rod. The tubing gives the clamps grip and makes the holder more comfortable to handle.
Using a vice, bend the rod in the middle. Come down approximately 4 inches and bend to the right and to the left. Then bend down 7 inches from the tips. We shaped it like this so it will fit most any size bag. The handle is necessary as it aids in controlling the opening and closing of the bag. It also serves as a brace which makes the holder strong and durable.
To put the bag on the holder, overlap 3-5 inches of the top of the bag over the rod. Cuff the part of the bag that is not attached to the holder. Clamp the bag to the holder as shown in the picture. You can use the full opening of the bag or make the opening small by gathering the bag at the handle. Wrap the excess around the rod. Using the 4 clamps, clamp at top and at tips of the rod. We don't have any problem with the clamps coming off if they are put on tightly.
To put a small shopping bag on the holder, put the rod down into the bag and stretch the back of the bag over the holder and clamp into place. This works well for picking up a small amount of litter. You can put two bags on the holder by attaching a bag to the back of the holder using the same clamps. When doing my daily walks, I put 2 Wal-mart bags on the holder and put trash in one and recyclables in the other. I always take extras bags with me including a large trash bag just in case I run into a more litter than expected. Then, all I have to do is switch to the large bag.

Making Character Photos
Nowadays many people have a camera on their cell phone so taking pictures can become part of an outdoor party or festival event.
Find a big piece of cardboard and make a scene or characters to match the theme of your party/event. You can use paint or oil pastels to do the designs. Cut holes in areas that would be the right height up for your guests to be able to pop their faces through. Become Hello Kitty, the sun, or a flower instantaneously! And let mom snap your photo too!

Wheelbarrow Flower Decorations
This is a craft simple enough for small children. You need plastic scoops from powder detergent, caps from gallon jugs of milk and small artificial flowers.
Wash the plastic scoops and the caps from the milk jugs. Use elmers glue to glue one of the caps to the sides of the plastic scoop. Place flowers inside.
Makes a nice Mother's Day gift or Party table favors at Wedding showers or for Birthday parties.

Bounce This Along - Uses For Bounce Fabric Softener
My mail carrier told me that the US Postal service sent out a message to all letter carriers to put a sheet of Bounce in their uniform pockets to keep yellow-jackets away. I use them all the time when playing baseball and soccer. I use it when I am working outside. It really works. The insects just veer around you.
All this time you've just been putting Bounce in the dryer!
- It will chase ants away when you lay a sheet near them. It also repels mice.
- Spread sheets around foundation areas, or in trailers, or cars that are sitting and it keeps mice from entering your vehicle.
- It takes the odor out of books and photo albums that don't get opened too often.
- It repels mosquitoes. Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors during mosquito season.
- Eliminate static electricity from your television (or computer) screen.
- Since Bounce is designed to help eliminate static cling, wipe your television screen with a used sheet of Bounce to keep dust from resettling.
- Dissolve soap scum from shower doors. Clean with a sheet of Bounce.
- To freshen the air in your home - Place an individual sheet of Bounce in a drawer or hang in the closet.
- Put Bounce sheet in vacuum cleaner.
- Prevent thread from tangling. Run a threaded needle through a sheet of Bounce before beginning to sew.
- Prevent musty suitcases. Place an individual sheet of Bounce inside empty luggage before storing.
- To freshen the air in your car - Place a sheet of Bounce under the front seat.
- Clean baked-on foods from a cooking pan. Put a sheet in a pan, fill with water, let sit overnight, and sponge clean. The anti-static agent apparently weakens the bond between the food and the pan.
- Eliminate odors in wastebaskets. Place a sheet of Bounce at the bottom of the wastebasket.
- Collect cat hair. Rubbing the area with a sheet of Bounce will magnetically attract all the lose hairs.
- Eliminate static electricity from Venetian blinds. Wipe the blinds with a sheet of Bounce to prevent dust from resettling.
- Wipe up sawdust from drilling or sand papering. A used sheet of Bounce will collect sawdust like a tack cloth.
- Eliminate odors in dirty laundry. Place an individual sheet of Bounce at the bottom of a laundry bag or hamper.
- Deodorize shoes or sneakers. Place a sheet of Bounce in your shoes or sneakers overnight.
- Golfers put a Bounce sheet in their back pocket to keep the bees away.
- Put a Bounce sheet in your sleeping bag and tent before folding and storing them. It will keep them smelling fresh.
- Wet a Bounce sheet, hose down your car, and wipe lovebugs off easily with the wet Bounce.

Beverage Tips For Weddings
My wedding tip is to provide complimentary beverages at a wedding, including alcohol. Beer and wine are fine; and if your budget allows, a full bar. The other point I'd like to stress is to have the beverages available as soon as the guests arrive. This way, everyone starts relaxing and having fun and there's less stress all the way around. The tackiest thing in the world is to expect your guests to pay for beverages at your wedding. They're your GUESTS (duh).
Once everyone's comfortable and chatting with drink in hand, they're suddenly happy they took the time to dress up, drive, and buy you a present. They're chatting with old friends and family members, and everyone's glowing - not just the self-possessed bride! It turns your event into something to be remembered. Obviously no one should be allowed to get drunk and obnoxious, I'm not suggesting that - but a glass of wine or a glass of beer is certainly a good starting point for a festive occasion.
One family wedding we went to had a bar where guests were expected to pay - outrageous prices, too, like $8.50 for a crappy glass of wine. Hard liquor was $10+. Everyone I knew hated that, they were bitching under their breath the whole time.

Use Bath Soap For Hand Soap
Several years ago after getting a dog I noticed how much liquid hand soap I was using. It was getting really expensive so I knew I would have to think of some frugal way to have an easy way to wash my hands many times a day. One day, while shopping at my local discount market, I noticed how inexpensive large bottles of liquid bath soap was; it was much cheaper than the small bottles of handsoap. I thought I would see how it was for washing hands and it is great!
My only problem was that the plastic 'straw' inside the pump was quite thick and I used more than I needed each time I pumped the soap. Well, to solve this problem I simple took a regular drinking straw and cut it the length of the container and placed it inside the one that came with the container. Now, I get less soap coming out each time I pump the liquid out and it has become even more economical. Hope this will help all of you 'frugal' gals!

Warm Up Mascara Before Applying And Other Tips
While putting on your foundation, just place your mascara somewhere next to your body. The mascara will heat up to your body temperature and it will be so much easier to apply. I usually place it down in my bra or you can put it under your leg if your sitting down. It doesn't dry it out at all, just makes it smooth for application.
Also, if you sometimes get a shaky hand, place a plastic spoon over your eyelid just above your lash line. The mascara will end up on the spoon, not on your lid.
One more tip for your mascara. I bend the wand just a little at the end of the brush to make about a 45 degree angle. Hope these little tips makes your beauty routine easier.

Camomile Tea for Cat Eye Problems
Save on expensive vet bills. If you have an animal that has an eye problem, bathe the eye in camomile tea. Steep strong tea as you would if you were going to drink it. Let it cool. Take a cotton ball or face cloth and soak it in the tea. Apply to animals eye(s). This helped me save lots of $ when my cat had an eye infection which the prescription wasn't helping. I only had to do it twice and the eye cleared up entirely.

Molasses For Nut Grass Prevention
Nut Grass: I sprayed the lawn with diluted molasses concentrate, because I read on the internet that the government is conducting experiments to help get rid of nut grass via organic methods. They are using sweet products (sugar, molasses...), because nut grass comes from a bulb and dirt full of nutrients contains micro-organisms that destroy bulbs.
After I sprayed a heavy dose of molasses water, I wondered if I should also water the lawn to keep the micro-organisms alive. Any opinions? We've had plenty of rain, but it's so doggone hot (upper 90's and rising) and no rain is expected for the next week. So, do I water the lawn or not? Any learned opinions out there? I can't dig up the nut grass, there is too much of it in the lawn and those bulbs keep breaking off, thereby rendering my efforts useless. I am aware that the lawn has to be full, well watered and fertilized to crowd out weeds, and am doing my best to achieve this state.

Need A Name For A Tile And Grout Cleaning Company
Hi! I'm starting up a tile and grout cleaning company and I need help coming up with a catchy name, one that people will remember. Something short, catchy, remeberable. Tile and Grout Restoration will be the description or tag line but I need a name first. I've had a few suggestions like:
Clino-Grauto, Hi-Tech, Insta-Clean or Clean-Grout-Out.
Additional services I will be offering include: counter tops, natural stone, concrete, carpet, shower enclosures, garage floors, pool decks etc. I will be serving Northern Illinois and Chicago area but don't want to be limited to the area. I am committed to use only bio-degradable and enviro-friendly products. Please help. I am desperate! The more ideas the better, help if you can. Thanks!

Can I Return A Lemon Poulan Lawnmower?
Lawnmower problem. Bought a new Poulan Self-propelled in June 07. Briggs and Stratton engine. VERY hard to start. Have used twice. Requires maybe 30 compressions of the primer (3 is recommended). I think it's a lemon--but are mower lemons returnable? My guess: needs some carburetor adjustment. Anyone have advice?

Problems with Smoke Detectors
Our house is 4 1/2 years old. Built new.We have 8 smoke detectors in the house electrically powered. Also we have in house security system, where in the panel lights "Fire" button. When I turn the system on, it starts beeping very loudly, continuously until I manually turn the system off by key given.
We had a same problem about 1 1/2 years ago. I call Hart Alarm Systems, original installer ,who tested all smoke detectors, replaced one at the basement level, everything worked fine since until the same problem now.
Do you think it is again smoke detector problem ? How do you test detectors? Where would I find test button? Is flashing lights mean the detector is working and considered good? Does an electric smoke detector carry also back up battery and where would it be installed? As I open the cover, only thing I see is few wires from the ceiling to the detector cover. Please advise ASAP. Thanks.

Advice on Colour Scheme for Pillars and House
I would appreciate your opinion on a colour scheme for our outside pillars wall and house. The house is a bungalow with mahogany windows, peat brown roof tiles, spoutings, facia, barriage boards and pvc garage door.
The masonary is all rough cast and painted magnolia. There is a base below the bell cast about 12 inches high from ground to bell cast. It has not been painted yet.
At the roadside entrance we have a set of pillars (7 in all) joined with a low wall. The pillars have natural sandstone pillarcaps. The pillars surface is smooth cement finish with a rough cast part in the middle of each face. We have painted this roughcast part magnolia to match the house.
The joining wall has natural sandstone coping and its top part is rough cast (painted magnolia) and it has a base of rubbed up smooth concrete.
So far so good but now comes the tricky part. To tie the smooth part of the pillars and the wall base in with the pillar caps would I have to paint it sandstone?
If so the wall base then has to be done sandstone. Also the base of the house would have to be done sandstone. This would not look right. Can you help me sort this out. thanks
Colin

Advice About Praying
Dear ThriftyFun Community:
Some weeks back I wrote. So many bad things had happened to my family then my mother was diagnosed with cancer. I thought God had forsaken us and I asked for advice about praying. So many of you responded with words of encouragement. You sent your prayers. My mom and I were so touched.
Well, here's what happened: the doctor operated on mom expecting to find worst -- pancreatic cancer, one of the least curable. Instead, it was lymphoma, the most curable. Mom has had one session of chemotherapy and already the tumor, which was the size of a baseball, has shrunk so small the doctor can't feel it anymore! Mom needs a few more treatments and her doctor feels she will be cured. Mom has some great doctors and state of the art treatment but I believe with all my heart the biggest medicine was answered prayers. I don't know how to thank you except to say that I will always keep you in my prayers. God Bless you all.
