How To Paint a Cement Floor

What is the best way to paint a cement porch floor? I would love to brighten up my porch for next year but want to do it right the first time...but I know NOTHING about types of paints, sealers, etc. Is one way better than another? Thanks.

Bandana Bonnets

This is a bonnet made from one bandana, a length of ribbon and some thread. I use a little fuseable web to help with the ribbon portion. (Tip: Hobby Lobby has tons of bandanas in many many different colors and themes. If you have a Hobby Lobby in your area.) Super quick and easy. Good beginner sewing project. Just straight lines.

Teacup Candles For Fundraising

Here's a great fundraising idea that my Relay for Life team developed. We purchased 60 small teacups and saucers off ebay. We took the cups to a local candle making shop and had them put a wick and scented candle wax in the cups. (They gave us a discount since we were raising money for American Cancer Society.) We then glued the tea cups to the saucers, put them in cellophane bags and tied on a pink ribbon. We sold them for $10 each, with the proceeds ($400) going to American Cancer Society.

Oscar (Turkish Van)

This is Oscar. We are guessing he is about 4 years old. We think he may be a Turkish Van cat. He certainly fits the description and had the loyal, dog-like personality. We took him in when he was about 9 months old. He had been thrown from a car and abandoned. He weighed only 3 pounds and was very sick. We took him to the vet and spent a lot of money and TLC nursing him back to health.

Oscar loves his catnip and loves to play with his cat toys. Every night in the summer, he goes for a walk around the property border. He loves to have his belly rubbed. He is one lucky kitty and I think he knows it!

What Is This Mexican Flower?

The blossom seems part of a shrub and was photographed in southern Mexico. Any ideas what the name or genera might be? Thanks!

Flower identification needs both foliage and the blossom to help differentiate between lookalikes.

Take Good Care of Your Books!

When reading a hard cover book, take the dust jacket off, so that it does not get damaged. To clean the dust jacket, use Pledge or other spray wax. Make sure it is spray wax, as other cleaners can damage the cover. Works on other book covers as well, but test first to make sure it doesn't harm the book. Use a bookmark, and never dog ear the pages, as this ruins the appearance of a book. Keep them nice for the next reader!

My Frugal Life - Live Within Your Means

Raising three children as a single mother is never easy. But the key to contentment is learning to live within your means. I never owned a new car, a house of my own, and worked in trade for most of my furniture. Yet that never really bothered me as I centered my life around being the best mother I could be and raising good well rounded children, my God-given responsibilities. My Frugal Life

I worked a lot of part time jobs to avoid the cost of child care. By doing so, it also allowed me time to be a part of their activities in their school years. The boys played baseball and basketball and many times I sold the pictures and decorations right off my walls to a friend to pay for their ball fees or team photos. I had a neighbor remark to me that the children she was raising were told by no uncertain terms that they COULD NOT AFFORD to let them play sports. Mine were told that we'd find a way to pay for their activities. And with God's help and sacrifice on my part, we made it!

Fortunately, yard sales came into existence the year my first son was born. Play clothes were purchased at them and they all had clothes they knew were to play in and NEW clothes were used only for church and school. As my first son outgrew his nice clothes, I had a close friend with a son a little younger and I took care of them and sold them to her in order to re-invest in new ones. This was a policy that I used with all three and they never lacked for nice clothes. When my daughter was small, I cleaned for a friend in trade for many of her daughter's clothes. I cannot see why many young mothers refuse to dress their children from yard sales. Obviously, my daughter learned from example. She now has a 10 month old son and, other than the new clothes at birth, he also has been raised in yard sale clothes. And many can't believe it-by the way he is dressed. It isn't that they could't afford new. She chooses to do this so that she can stay at home with him, rather than work. Children learn by example and she followed my leading.

There were other things that helped see me through child-rearing days as well. I taught myself to decorate cakes for my oldest son's birthday. Baking and decorating cakes for others has seen us through many of my children's high maintenance years. Three high school graduations, two beautiful weddings, baby showers and many many birthday parties. I didn't call for professional help. I chose to do it myself! And a lot of money was saved. Cooking at home saved a lot of money as well. Eating out was done in moderacy. I feel that the money saved far exceeded the dread of cleaning up the messy kitchen.

Sometimes I wonder if the situation had been different, would I have chosen to live the same lifestyle? I honestly can't say. But I think that a lot was learned in those years and three great children were the reward for MY FRUGAL LIFE!

Make An Offer On Last Day Of Yard Sales

The last day of a yard sale is a GREAT day to buy LOTS of stuff. Being an avid yard sale shopper, I have had it proven over and over that, on the last day of a yard sale, the person or group of persons are VERY motivated sellers. I've gotten some lovely items for next to nothing because they didn't want to carry them back into the house.

Just make an offer to the host to buy the entire inventory for $10 or whatever seems frugal but reasonable. Carry empty boxes in your vehicle, use one to throw in true garbage, and the others to sort through usable/saleable items. Make an offer and see for yourself!

Making Your Own Sauerkraut

I love to have kraut for the New Year and this is a easy way to have delicious kraut if you enjoy canning.

Cut your raw cabbage fine. Pack in your clean jars. Press down real tight with a wooden spoon. Fill the jar about half full and add 2 tsp. of salt and 1 tsp. of sugar. Continue filling the jar with the cabbage. Pour boiling water into the jar and cut through center of the cabbage with knife. Fill with water and put on a lid TIGHT.

Store in a cool place for 5 weeks or more. Be sure and put jars on heavy paper or shallow pan. Juice will work out during fermentation. It is then ready to eat. ENJOY

Roast Your Own Green Chilies

This is the time of year to purchase fresh roasted green chilies, but why have someone else roast something you can do yourself so easily?

Here's how: In the evening or morning when it's cooler, wash and air dry fresh chilies. My favorite is the Anaheim variety, but this works for all of the chilies. Preheat your oven to 500 degrees. Lay the chilies across your oven rack, with 1/2 inch in between each one. Let them roast in the oven for 20-30 minutes, or until chilies are black on most of their surfaces. You can turn the chilies over halfway through the roasting. Cover cookie sheets with heat-proof plastic wrap. Using tongs place the blackened chilies on the wrapped cookie sheets. Let them steam and cool, around 30 minutes. Put the cooled pans into the freezer. After they have frozen, stack the chilies into freezer bags. Remove as needed.

The skins will slip off by simply putting the frozen chilies under hot water. The taste of these are SO much better than anything you can take out of a can. Enjoy!

Keep Your Purse Safe When Dining Out

Ladies, be careful with your purses and wallets. Learn from my mistake! I had my wallet stolen right out of my purse while dining at the Rain Forest Cafe on Wed night. This restaurant is inside the Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, IL.

The thief immediately went using my Visa card inside the mall and then tried to get gas and charge another big amount at Best Buy before Chase denied the card.

We are not responsible for the $2,000 + that was put on my card (thankfully). I filed a police report and have done other things in hopes of helping law enforcement to catch the thief. The officer said they've had many reports of this very thing happening at that particular restaurant.

My advice, ladies, is don't do what I did and that is to hang your purse from your chair. I didn't want to place on the dirty floor but wish I had. Would have saved me much aggravation!

This restaurant is just the kind of place where this kind of crime could easily happen. It is kind of dark, very busy, lots of people milling around and you are easily distracted, especially if you're a Mom of young kids like me!

Better yet, leave your purse at home and let hubby carry your ID. Perhaps just bring a little purse with only the bare essentials.

I knew exactly what was in my wallet and it wasn't a lot: not much cash, a Visa card, ATM card, Sam's Club card and driver's license. Within 1/2 hour or so of returning home, I had the cards all canceled. We had a message from Chase about our Visa on our answering machine asking us to call immediately regarding the large charges. I was able to get a new driver's license the next morning.

Carry only what you really need and nothing you'd be sad/upset if you had stolen. No one needs tons of credit cards. Do not carry your Social Security card!

Someone very carefully and sneakily unzipped my purse and lifted my wallet without any of us being the wiser.

This restaurant really should let the patrons know or try to have security in place. I doubt though they want to advertise that customers are being robbed there, not too good for business.

Sorry this is so long but wanted to get the message out to be very careful with where you put your valuables when you are out in public. Take care with your wallets, purses and packages.

I will not be returning to the Rain Forest Cafe any time soon. It gives me a real bad feeling even when I think about it. Their prices are very high for what you get anyway. You're paying for the atmosphere which our children really enjoy but I definitely could live without after this incidence!

Making Wall Art from Your Photos

People are always asking about decorating walls - I just saw a great easy project at http://www.kodak.com go to "Consumer Project" and click the tab "Tips and Projects" and go to "Digital wall art".

It is how to digitally enlarge a favorite picture and then put it into three matching frames. Doesn't sound too hard to do, and the results are very stylish! (and there are other projects, too.)

Put a Tray Under Your Mixer

Try placing a plastic tray under your mixer when baking. It will make the mixer easier to slide across the countertop and the tray will catch any spills. Clean-up is so much easier when all you have to do is wash the tray under the faucet.

Use a Squirt Bottle for Dishes

Take a squirt bottle that you are comfortable using. Fill 1/4 liquid dish soap, then fill the rest with water. When you put a dish in the sink (to be cleaned later) squirt inside with soap mixture and leave it.

Do this with all your dishes; by the time you decide to wash them you will not need to scrub them!

This tip will save on the cost of soap as well as your scrubbers.

Looking For The Name & Artist Of Late '80s Song

I'm trying to remember a late 80'song I think, but all I can remember is a guy sitting in an log cabin on a rocking chair and he is singing, and then all the animals heads on the wall around him start singing with him. At first I thought it was a George Michael clip and then Richard Marx, but I can't seem to find the tune on any of their songs. Does anyone remember seeing this clip or am I imagining it all?
