Taking Care of Clematis

The theory that clematis like their feet cool and their head in the sun is true, so be sure to put several inches of mulch at the base of the vine.

Feed with liquid fertilizer throughout the growing season.

A newly planted clematis needs lots of water to get established especially if your planting it along a wall or fance, or there is a dry spell.

I prune my clematis back in mid-May here in Ontario, Canada. Zone 5

Organizing with Free Boxes from Aldi's

To organize more than one thing of different or the same sizes is not always so easy. Although it's all in where you go shopping. When we started to go to Aldi's I was impressed with their prices, although what REALLY caught my eyes were the boxes that I could take home for FREE!

These boxes have lids, but the front is out for the shoppers to see and pick what they would like. Like a dream come true, less work for me! Just what I needed to be able to see what is in the box.

I brought them home, cut them to the height I needed if necessary. Got a sheet of Optix (plastic glass), and cut that to fit box front (having paper on floor in case of glue coming out front side), I glued the cardboard from inside using glue called Liquid Nails adhesive. I placed plastic glass inside of box over the glue. Then I put heavy things around the edges of the glued part so it will hold strong and left that dry over night.

Next day I had some really nice storage boxes that I use for holding crochet thread, yarn, my small bottle paints, gladiola's stored over winter, fabric, great for garage and basement things that just need a place to be put into so you can find them when you want them. They come in different sizes, you can decorate them if you want. Drilling through the plastic (at box center) you can put a knob in front to get off the shelf. If the box is colored use white contact paper to label them.

Pizza - Tips and Recipes

Recipes and tips for making pizza at home. Post your ideas.

For Crisp Crusts

No need to go out and buy a fancy expensive baking tile to produce a crisp bottom on your pizza and French bread. An unglazed terra-cotta tile purchased from a flooring or tile store can just easily substitute.

Removing Stuck Food From a Pan

Tips for removing stuck food from a pan. Post your ideas.

Food stuck to the bottom of your pans, such as lasagna. Fill the pan with cold water and pour some salt all along the bottom of the pan and let sit overnight. The next morning the pan should wash with ease. Works great!

Uses for Hotel Shampoo Bottles

Uses for the shampoo and conditioner bottles you get when you stay at a hotel. Post your ideas.

Have you ever wondered what to do with all those shampoo bottles from the hotels? Why not pour them into your soap pump and use it to wash your hands, or whatever needs to be cleaned. Smells good too! You can even thin it down with some water to make it go farther.

Trash Bag for the Suitcase

I always toss a clean trash bag first thing into any suitcase I am packing. I use it as a laundry bag or to carry home wet swimsuits and towels. When I unpack, I toss in a clean bag before I store the suitcases.

Alternative to Water Guns

Being adamantly opposed to using any kind of "weapons" as toys, and this includes water guns, I give my kids plastic squirt bottles, either clean spray bottles of water or even cleaned out plastic ketchup or syrup bottles to squirt each other with.

Depth Gauge for Drilling

Create a cheap and effective depth gauge for precise drilling by using a cable tie. Secure the tie around the drill bit at the desired location. Snip off the excess. The tie can then be adjusted for each subsequent change in desired depth by sliding it up or down. NOTE: Choose a cable tie color that contrasts with the wood you're using.

Softball Jersey Quilt

I took all the softball jerseys from my granddaughters years of playing softball and made her a huge quilt from them. She cherishes this quilt and it brings back lots of memories for her.

Use a Gridded Stabilizer When Quilting

Make the quickest most accurate quilt you'll ever make using a gridded stabilizer. It's made with one inch squares, but you can use any size squares you want. I place the squares in the area I choose, use the tip of my iron to make them stick till I get all the squares on. Now you just iron the fabric down, fold on the lines at the squares edges, and simply sew a straight line. One direction first, then the other direction. It's so fast and looks perfectly accurate. It's fun and it really is that simple, I love it.

Easy Two Colored Quilt

If you just want to make a quilt and you don't have a huge fabric stash, just do a two colored quilt. First remove the biased edge, rotary cut the fabric in long six inch strips, alternating the colors as you sew. end the piece so one color is at one end and the other color is at the other end.

Next, turn the large piece and rotary cut the other direction. Now you have the squares in strips to sew, by matching the beginning square with the second color. Cut accurately and press each seam going one direction. If you don't want to mess with batting, use a blanket for fleece for the back. No batting needed for the middle.

Used Dryer Sheets For Shoes

I take used dryer sheets, put them into a used nylon knee-hi, then stuff it into shoes to keep them smelling fresh! And, yes, when I'm in a rush, the dryer sheets go straight into shoes!

Keep a Calendar In Your Car

I keep a calendar in my car. I jot down due dates for library books, videos, doctor appointments, etc. I check it before I pull out of the driveway each morning - thus saving a return trip home for a forgotten book or video that may be due.

Remove Your Yard Sale Signs

After the sale, before you count up all of your profit, go around the neighborhood and remove every last yard sale sign! (If you have blanketed a large area with signs, you may want to have kept a list of the signs locations.) This will keep your neighbors happy and make them less likely to remove your signs before the actual sale date.

Uses for Unwanted Shampoo

Tips for using shampoo that you don't like to use on your hair. Post your ideas.

If for any reason I don't like a shampoo or shower gel that I've bought, I don't toss it out or give it away. I keep it to use when handwashing lingerie, and other items with. Works beautifully.

Quilting When You Don't Like To Sew

For people who want to quilt but hate to sew, there are many books in the library just for you. You'll find choices for simple or complicated patterns. Calendar quilts are often done by hand because they use so much applique. These types of quilts go over very big at quilt shows, so don't be shy. Then of course you have to enter it in the county fair.

Painting on the Sidewalk

A plastic squirt-type bottle filled with colored water will allow your Picasso to "paint" on the sidewalk. Don't use too much food coloring, and this will just disappear when it dries.

Sister Barbara Joke

Sitting by the window of her convent, Sister Barbara opened a letter from home one evening. Inside the letter was a $100.00 bill her parents had sent.

Sister Barbara smiled at the gesture. As she read the letter by the window, she noticed a shabbily dressed stranger leaning against the lamp post below.

Quickly, she wrote, "Don't despair. Sister Barbara," on a piece of paper, wrapped the $100 bill in it, got the man's attention and tossed it out the window to him. The stranger picked it up, and with a puzzled expression and a tip of his hat, went off down the street.

The next day, Sister Barbara was told that a man was at her door, insisting on seeing her. She went down and found the stranger waiting. Without a word, he handed her a huge wad of $100.00 bills.

"What's this?" she asked. "That's the $8,000. you have coming," he replied.. 'Don't Despair' paid 80 to 1."

Brown Sugar Pie Recipe

I'm looking for a recipe for Brown Sugar Pie. Many years ago there was a cooking show on TV that featured two older gentlemen - I believe the show was called "Cookin' Cheap", but I'm probably wrong. This recipe was extremely easy to make. While baking, the pie was supposed to "raise up like a top hat". Anyone every heard of this?

Planting at Different Levels

My mother had 3 green thumbs and 9 green fingers (OK I'm overstating). I'm just beginning to garden and Mom's been gone a long time. She used to talk about planting at different levels right next to each other which would allow something to be coming up when something was dying down. Has anyone ever heard of the and what are the particulars? She was not talking about planting annuals as fill-ins either. Any info will be greatly appreciated.
She was talking about bulbs, I think!

Grease in Washing Machine

A couple of weeks ago I washed a pair of my son's jeans which had grease on them, ever since I have been getting a lot of grease stains on my light clothes after I wash them. How can i get rid of this problem?

I have washed lots of dark clothes to see if I can get rid of it. I use hot water only. I have tried bleach and ran the cycle a couple of times. Please give me some ideas. I think I have a small leak in the bottom of the washer somewhere, would there be a way that grease could come up into the washing chamber from there?

Natural Bug Repellents

My girls are going to summer camp soon and I would like to give them a natural way to keep the bugs away. I am really anti-chemical and would like to stay away from the bug repelents that you find in the stores. I know some people may recommend dryer sheets (they seem to work for so many things) but I've read an article that they contain dangerous chemicals. I would appreciate your suggestions.

Netflix for Books?

I recently found a reference to a service that lets you set up a request list for books - similar to the personalized movie lists available on NetFlix - and check out a given book, much like a library.

Now I cannot find the reference or the website service. Has anyone else here seen it, or have any ideas on what the URL address might be?

Thanks much!

Repairing Tiles and Dry Wall on a Shower Wall

I have a wall in my shower that had cracked tiles and started out to be a small hole but now it has grown. I am covering it with a poster board. I am wondering what to do to repair the sheetrock and retile it? Who would I call to help me fix this, a plumber or a contractor? Any suggestions?

How To Use a Broiler for Fish

How do you use the broiler in the oven. I have a recipe for salmon but I'm not sure how to use it. I thought you were suppose to leave the door ajar but that would really heat up your house. If this is the way to do it, is there a way to adapt broiled recipes to baking temps?

The Pomeranian Dog
By Lee Dobbins

The Pomeranian is one of they toy breeds and weighs between 3 and 7 pounds (there are larger poms, and although not to the breed standard, they still make wonderful loving pets!). Intelligent and vivacious, these little dogs will steal your heart, but don't let them get away with too much as they must be properly trained or they will become too demanding. With proper care your Pom can live to about 15 years old.
