When the family would like something a bit luxurious for dinner and the budget won't quite make it, try a steak salad. Get a smaller steak, marinate if for a few hours as you normally would (Italian dressing will do). When it's dinner time, cook it to suit the family, medium to medium well is best. Let sit for 10 minutes.

Make a bowl of any salad ingredients on hand, portion them out, slice the steak very thinly, and let that be portioned according to people's taste, that is, small bites for children, or less for those who don't like to eat large amounts of meat. Scatter on top of salad greens. Serve with garlic bread or french bread, and dress with your favorite dressing.

Source: My family is the source for our way of doing it; it was a desperation recipe. It may be done elsewhere, I don't know.

Yup, it's great. We use leftover steak (after we've grilled, leftover grilled steak the next day is wonderful!). My kids even ask to bring it to school for lunch. I also use leftover chicken the same way.
