Whipping Cream is Heavy cream.
In the pre 1960's cream had 2 varieties that I recall. Coffee Cream, which was a light cream, no longer found and
whipping crea m that is the heavy cream). Half and half is just that! Half milk and half cream. Don't confuse this with cream.

Is "heavy cream" 1/2 and 1/2, or heavy whipping cream?

By Lana from Kennewick, WA

RE: What is Heavy Cream?

Heavy cream is whipping cream. On the ingredients list, heavy cream is the first ingredient. On Half and Half, milk and cream are the first two ingredients. The total fat on heavy cream is 8% and saturated fat 17%. Half and Half has 5% total fat with 10% saturated fat. You can make a beautiful, tasty whipped cream from heavy whipping cream that is far superior to the store bought containers. Try it. Half and Half can be used in your coffee, or cream soups that require more fat than whole milk. However, I have used heavy cream in many sauces and soups and I prefer the sweet, smooth taste of that over Half and Half. (01/09/2010)
