Patriotic Kodi - Rake Your Carpet

This photo is of "Patriotic Kodi" Kodi is short for Kodiak (like the bear); Kodi was fluffy and cuddly like a big ole bear and still is. Kodi is seven years old, born August 6th; he became a family member on Valentines Day 1998. A family friend had purchased Kodi and his sister, they turned out to be too much for her to handle, so Kodi became our Sweetheart! Kodi is a hybrid breed from the Shiloh Shepherd kennels; a long haired German shepherd weighing in at 120 pounds of which is light for his breed

P.S. Kodi has great fun tracking wild coyotes and catching tennis balls.

My tip for the day is, with a hairy companion like Kodi hair can be a real problem for the carpet and vacuum, so before I vacuum I rake the carpet, its wild how much hair is in the teeth of the rake, the rake is about seven inches wide. I bought it from the local hardware store for around eight dollars and I wouldn't be without it. This real outdoors rake works a lot better than a carpet rake.

A Quilt for my Mom

This is the second quilt I made. For this one I used some of my kids old clothing...most she bought for them : ).

I cut them into squares and purchased a dark blue sheet for the back.

For the middle I just used an old blanket, instead of batting.

It's a quilt made by her first born with her grandbabies clothes in it.

She loves it.

Today's Tips

Lipstick Stains - The Amazing Uses of Avon's Skin So Soft

If Mom has makeup, even only for rare occasions, the lipstick will one day become the lip, face or clothing smear (of course only on the children's best clothing, not the play clothes which could go easily in the rag bin). It may also become a stain on the most obvious spot in the whole house, in the middle of the living room carpeting.

Lipstick On Carpet: Take a small amount of Skin so Soft and a soft rag and gently work it into the rug, gently not rubbing it deeper into the fibers, this can be dabbed until little is left and a good spot cleaner can remove the residue left behind.

Lipstick On Face: For the beautiful faces of lipstick, a soft wash cloth and skin so soft will do the trick without the tale tale clown look left for days.

Lipstick On Clothing: Spray or pour a small amount on the clothing, dab lightly rub, and launder the former reminder for years away and no one will no the lipstick culprit had struck again.

Saving Money Printer Ink Cartridges

Tips and advice for saving money on ink cartridges for your printer. Post your ideas.

Ink Cartridge Tips

Ink cartridges can cost a fortune. They also do not last as long as they used to. I have come up with the frugalist way to refill and eventually earn free cartridges from Office Depot. Buy the better kits, and soak your clogged cartridges in the designated cleaning fluid, sometimes this will take a few days. Refill, wipe the inside area of the printer with cotton and cotton swabs with alcohol, save the printer cleaning fluid to unclog that cartridge to get it refill one more time. If it finally gave up the ghost, time to recycle. Go to Office Depot and ask for the little bags for cartridge refills when you return enough you then receive a free cartridge.

Keeping Your Skin Moist

Apply creams and lotions to slightly damp skin, even if you have to "sprinkle" on a bit more water, as you dry off quicker in winter. I sometimes just quick-wet my hands to help it along. They go a whole lot further and help seal moisture from the water into the skin.

Uses for Vinyl Wallpaper

Tips for using Vinyl Wallpaper for something other than wallpaper. Post your ideas.

Sturdy vinyl wallpaper makes great shelf liners. Home improvement stores, garage sales and recycling centers are good places to find good quality paper at reasonable to almost free prices. I usually just cut paper to fit, but you could paste it down just like you would do on the wall. Most papers come prepasted and are easy to use.

Habitat for Humanity Stores

In our area there are a number of outlet stores for Habitat for Humanity. Their stores sell items that they can't use in the homes they build. The prices are great and the money goes to a wonderful cause. Be prepared to do some fixing and adjusting with some of the items. In our area, stores have plumbing fixtures, windows, cupboards, counters, items from stores and businesses which have remodeled, or contractors extra items. The variety is amazing. You can find a store by doing a search for Habitat for Humanity in your area.

Give Each Kid Their Own Colored Towel

As a Mom to six I was tired of towels on the bathroom floor and everyone claiming that it was not them so I bought each child their own color towels. Now I know who is not hanging them up and they are not sharing towels when feeling ill as well.

A Mail Box For Each Person In The House

I purchased 8 stackable plastic mailbox slots and labeled each one with a family members name. All schoolwork, mail, etc, that is for other people goes in their slot. The kids use it to keep homework that they are working on in it. And when I run into field trip slips and permission forms I sign them and put them in to the child's mailbox slot. This teaches them a lot of responsibility as they have to check it and bring things back to school to turn in.

Cleaning African Violets Without Killing The Leaves

When your violets get dusty, get or buy a soft bristle paint brush and dust it lightly. This works good on artificial trees also. (African Violets are very sensitive to being watered on the leaves. Always water them from their saucers.)

Filling Birdhouses and Feeders

Here's a cheap and easy funnel to fill your bird houses. An empty 2 liter bottle cut (whatever length you want) then just put the cap end in the bird house, pour as much as you like and this is FAST.

Shredding Old Gift Wrap For Packing Material

Save gift wrap; put it through your shredder. Place the shredded gift wrap in two separate bags: one for general gifts and one for Christmas time. These bags can hang on hooks most anywhere until needed for packing, separating items or whatever. The shredded paper not only looks nice but you`re recycling as well. Have fun!!

Keeping Track of Deductions Throughout The Year

At the end of the month when I reconcile my bank statement I go ahead and start adding together all of the tax write offs for January. I staple them all together and put a cover sheet on top with the numbers. I do this at the end of every month.

When tax season comes I have twelve numbers to add for each category. It has made tax season very simple and just adds a few minutes a month to my check reconciliation. Give it a try you'll be amazed as to how simple this is.

Removing Ink Stains From Carpet

Tips for cleaning ink stains from carpet. Post your ideas.

Caution: If your carpet manufacturer has a website or toll free number, be sure to research what advice they might have. Different solutions may not work on different type of carpet. It is always good to pretest any solution on a carpet remnant.

Cleaning Black Pen Ink off Carpet

My dog chewed up a black ink pen on my cream carpet. I was devastated. My 11 year old niece could not understand why I was so upset. I explained I'd already had her ruin one carpet with ink.

She proceeded to tell me not to worry just mix white vinegar and baking soda and blot the stain. Every bit of it came up. (Don't put a lot of baking soda or it will erupt in the container like a volcano. Use about a 1/2 cup vinegar and 2 or 3 tablespoons soda.)

Removing Gum from Hair With Skin So Soft

When little ones insist on learning to blow bubbles with bubble gum, a parent will eventually have the inevitable chore of gum in someone's hair. LOL It is even more exciting when the hair is on the head of the seven week old newborn, with masses of it. Her older brother did not make a bubble on the first attempt, in fact the whole piece became the glob of gum that stuck to his sister's hair.

Mom, knows better then to use peanut butter, the oil just can't cut the gum, or ice, what on a baby? Skin so Soft from Avon is the most amazing degummer in a pinch. Gum always seems to get stuck at the most inconvenient times, and Mom always carries a small little bottle in her purse for those greatest needs. It smells better then PB, it is washable and not so greasy and Gumout is too toxic for the little ones.

Ask Sales Reps for Coupons

Everyone knows to use coupons to save money at the grocery store, but the real trick is how to acquire a variety of coupons to use. Many manufacturers have their sales reps visit grocery stores on a regular basis to ensure that their products are on the store shelf. If you see a non-store employee working in a store, take the time to ask them if they have any free coupons that they could give you.

I work as a sales rep for a major manufacturer of cleaning supplies, and regularly carry coupons for the products I represent. If I see a customer trying to decide between which brand to purchase, I'll hand them a coupon book with $5 in savings to "sway" their decision. On a monthly basis, I also instant rebate coupon certain items that we're trying to move.

There are numerous sales reps representing nearly every item that a store carries, so it pays to ask for coupons.

Saving Money on Newspapers Bought for Coupons

I don't know about everywhere else, but where I live it costs a dollar for the Sunday paper. It may not seem like a lot to the everyday person, but when you're buying it for the coupons, so you can save money, every penny counts.

So, here's my tip. If you know someone else who buys the Sunday paper for that same reason just switch off with them. For example: say me and my friend buy the same paper for the same reason, so one week I would buy the paper, clip my coupons and hand the paper and the unwanted coupons over to my friend. Then the next week she would buy the paper and hand it over to me when she's done. So, me and my friend would save an extra dollar every two weeks. Again, it may not seem like a lot, but remember every penny counts.

Reusing Gift Ribbons

I use gift ribbons over. To press them flat again, as they have tie wrinkles, I use a curling iron. This is usually the right heat and I can slide the ribbon along and it presses.

Uses For Coffee Creamer Containers

I use the empty plastic bottles that I get the powdered coffee creamer in as freezer bottles in coolers. Just rinse and fill with water put in freezer and they are always ready to go. They are small enough that they don't take up a lot of room.

Uses for Junk Mail

Ideas for using junk mail in a productive way. Post your ideas!

I make good use of the loads of junk mail I get. I cut the bigger letter type paper into strips on the crease and I use these for shopping lists. I also use the envelope to put my coupons in to go shopping. These are also good for note paper to jot down messages or to give to the kid's to write on. Really makes good use of all the junk mail. I have been doing this for a long time.

Getting Creative With Lonely Socks and Mittens

I have a great tip for those who don't know what to do with those pesky lonely socks and mittens that we all have. I have 3 fantastic girls but they are always losing their mates. A quick tip I found to keep gloves and mittens together is to tie a few strings to a hanger and place large paper clips on the ends. The pair of mittens easily slide on the paper clip and they are mated and drying in no time.

However for those that have totally lost their mate I pick similar colors or totally different to make a pair. I take some fabric paint or appliques which ever sounds fun. Most of the time I use pieces of fabric left around the house and decorate as loud and flamboyant and I like. my girls think they are just the cutest and want to wear them all the time. Even with the socks.

I took a white and black sock, making sure that they were about the same size. I tied black ribbons all over the white sock and white ribbons all over the black sock. my middle daughter, who is 9, didn't want to take them off. Even my 12 year old thinks they are cool.

I also will use those cute socks with the decorations sewn in such as frogs as patches on my oldest daughters jeans. Most jeans today are stretchy so when you patch them with a non stretchy fabric it just seems to come out. Cut the sock and use as a patch. She now has a pair of jeans with frogs on the knees, and a matching pair of socks, one green, one black, with those buggy frog eyes all over them.

Hope you have fun with this. it is really a treat for the kids and a great friend maker.

Cleaning Silver Chain & Coins

Here's a way to clean silver rope and badly corroded silver coins.

For coins: Wet the coin with water and rub it with regular aluminum cooking foil. You can leave the background dark to highlight the detail of the coin. Metal detectorists who find medieval period coins in the UK use this method. I use it when cleaning shipwreck silver coins. To clean silver rope chain or to thoroughly clean silver coins, put them into an ordinary rock tumbler with water and balls of aluminum foil (the drum should be half full). Only do one coin at a time. It usually takes only a few hours to clean the worst coins and rope. You should check your item once every hour to make sure you don't overdo it. If you don't have a rock tumbler you could try a plastic bottle with tight lid and simply hand shack it using the foil balls and water as stated above.

Note: Only coins that are severally corroded due to be buried on land or sea should be cleaned. These require cleaning only to make the detail visible. Many silver coins have added value because of discoloration so don't remove it! Take your valuable or heirloom silver rope to a professional for cleaning. I hope this helps someone.

From Frozen Tender Roast

To make a tender roast put it into your oven frozen, yes frozen.
Place it into your cooking container garnish it with vegi's, seasonings or what ever you like, pour in a can of Beef Stock (can use Chicken Stock too) and 1-2 cups of water (if the pot will hold it). Put in the oven on low (I put it on at 250 degrees F).

I normally put my roast in oven at 3:00 pm and cook it until supper time at 7:00 pm.

When you cook it frozen at a low temp for at least 4 hours, the roast will be the tenderest. You can cut it with a fork!!!

Shredded Wheat & Eggs

This was my favorite breakfast as a child. It still is, as a matter of fact. Whether you use 1 or 2 Shredded Wheat biscuits depends on your appetite.

Ingredients:

  • Boiled water
  • 1 or 2 Shredded Wheat biscuits
  • 1 or 2 eggs
  • 2-4 pats of butter
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • Crispy bacon, crumbled (optional)

Directions:

Place Shredded Wheat biscuits on a plate. Pour enough boiled water over the Shredded Wheat to soften it. Drain off as much water as you can. Put 2 pats of butter on each biscuit. Add salt and pepper. Fry your eggs over easy, or sunny side up. Place 1 egg on each biscuit. Add crispy bacon bits, if you like. Enjoy!

Note: This is best with runny eggs.

  • 2 c. Grape-Nuts cereal
  • 1 cup coconut
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 t. vanilla

Directions:

In large bowl, combine oats, flour, cereal, coconut, and raisins. In saucepan, bring oil and honey to a boil. Stir constantly for 1 minute. Add vanilla. Looking for Starch for Crocheted Items

Can someone help me? I crochet and recently have wanted to use starch on some of the smaller things I have made. I used STA-FLO liquid starch, mixed it with water and the item came out to be blue instead of the snow white it really is. I'm not sure of a good mixture.

Then on a different item, I used TAC, Porce A Like, Porcelainizer, that changed the snow white to an off antique white. Not what I was looking for. What am I doing wrong?

Does anyone know of a good mixture to use that will not change the item to a different color? Or a good product that is on the market that will stay clear and not wilt in humid weather?

Your help is much appreciated.
