Apple Roll I

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • apples, chopped
  • additional sugar
  • butter
  • cinnamon

Directions

Mix together flour, salt, shortening, milk, baking powder and 2 Tbsp. sugar. Roll dough an inch thick, spread with chopped apples. Roll up and cut into 1 1/2-inch slices. ombine sugar and 2 cups water in a pan and heat to boiling. Place rolls in baking pan of hot syrup. Sprinkle with sugar, cinnamon and butter and bake in moderate oven until brown.

Apple Roll II

Ingredients

  • About 6 apples, sliced
  • sugar
  • cinnamon
  • Syrup:
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • candy red hots, opt.
Dough:
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 3 Tbsp. butter
  • 1/3 cup milk

Directions

In a saucepan, put water and sugar. Boil together until like a syrup. Add candy red hots. Pour into a 9x13 inch baking pan. Mix the flour, salt and baking powder well. Cut in butter; add milk. Roll dough to 1/2 inch thickness. Cover dough with sliced apples. Sprinkle apples with sugar and cinnamon to taste. Roll in a roll. Cut in slices 1 1/2 inch thick. Lay slices flat on top of syrup. Dot with butter and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Bake at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes or until a golden brown. Turn out on a platter and pour syrup over.
