Little Friend at the Hummingbird Feeder

I love hummingbirds and think that many of the feeders make wonderful garden accessories. Here is my feeder with a little friend!

How to Make Seed Tape

If you have trouble planting small seeds such as carrots and radishes without having to do lots of thinning of young plants, the perfect answer is seed tapes.

Baking Tin Primary Colour Game

Materials

  • 1 baking (muffin) tin (an old one works great!)
  • *12 magnets (four each in red, yellow and blue)
  • 1 package hook and loop tape or recloseable plastic mounting strip.( Like velcro brand)

Directions

Attach the hook and loop to the back of the tin and hang it at kid level. Place one magnet in each cup. Help your toddler arrange them so the each colour is all together in line. Then mix them up and do it again. I find that my toddler will spend a lot of time mixing them up, then want some help to put them right. This could easily be adapted to be animals (mammals, fish and birds) or foods (vegetables, fruits and grains) or whatever suits your family.

If you don't happen to have a surplus of magnets lying around you can easily make your own with magnetic tape from the craft store. Simply cut to the size you need and glue to found objects. Old game pieces, buttons, small toys, etc. all work great!

By Red Molly from Seattle, WA

Editor's Note: Because magnets could be a choking hazard to the little ones, make sure that they are large enough so this is not a problem.

Casualty of Pet Food?

Be VERY careful what you feed your animals! I received my "new baby" a rat terrier puppy on Thursday. I fed him a portion of a new can of dog food that was NOT on the recall list and he was dead by early Saturday morning. Animal owners, Please do some research on this. Sad in KS.

Shampoo As A Carpet Stain Remover

Put 1/2 shampoo, 1/2 water in a spray bottle, spray the stain, let it sit for a minute or two then scrub lightly with a rag or brush. Most stains you encounter will come out!

Toilet Paper For Small Messes

I installed an inexpensive toilet paper holder to the inside, of one of my kitchen cabinet doors. Many times, all I need is a small piece of paper to clean up something. A few squares of toilet tissue will do the job, rather than using a sheet of paper towel. I now have installed a toilet paper holder in our garage, our basement and in our shed!

Reuse Greetings Cards As Postcards

I save pretty used greeting cards; Christmas, birthday, everyday cards. I cut off the back page so you have the front of the card. I use the pretty card as a post card to send to friends and relatives. I run a black line down the center on the back side. It is cheaper than a letter and makes somebody's day a brighter one. Plus, you are recycling.

Take Clear Photos For Selling Online

When taking pictures of stuff to sell online, make sure you have a neutral background and good lighting. Otherwise the object won't be seen well and that can affect sales! I read a book that recommended you use two camera lights at 45 degree angles to the object on opposite sides to get the best lighting. Experiment until you get what works for you.

Lemon for Cleaning Copper

To clean a copper pot, just wet the pot sprinkle on some salt then cut a lemon in half, rub the pot and, walla, shines very good. I use this myself when I have no copper cleaner.

Thrifty Fabric Softener

I use half the soap listed for my washing liquid. I add 2 Tbsp. of baking soda and fill the rinse with vinegar. I cut sheets into four and use only a piece in the dryer. You would never know the difference and let me tell you, $1.50 for a bottle of vinegar (same size softener is almost $10.00) and it's better for the environment.

A Better Choice - A Joke

Mr. John was not happy with his daughter's choice for groom. His wife asks "Why do you keep on rejecting your daughter's choice?" The father says "There is always a better choice."

At this, his wife says "My father said the same thing when I agreed to marry you."

My Frugal Life: Save and Use Everything

I went through a divorce several years ago, due to not being emotionally mature. I turned to drugs and, in a matter of 8 months, I found myself in a homeless shelter. I had lost my children, my home and myself. I was unemployable, due to not finishing school and thinking I knew it all! My Frugal LifeI had to relearn everything I knew and then change it to make it in this life. So I started slowly and I started paying my bills, even if it meant a letter and $5.00 dollars a month! I had to show people that I was responsible. Well, that was in 1998!

I've come a long way and the things I was taught back then I still do today, so here are a few I do: any container can be reused for something whether it be garbage or bath salts or beads or whatever, reuse it! Dinners become leftovers and go to us, the neighbors and, last but not least, the dogs. Bread is used for sandwiches, then toast, then put in freezer for garlic bread made in toaster and, last but not least, saved for the birds in winter. Garbage can be used to start fires in our fire pit (don't use plastic), food is saved in old milk containers in fridge and put in the ground to put back in what I took out!

Clothes are bought in thrift store and yard sales and worn, then turned into rugs that I sell or give as gifts or use as material to make something else. Plastic bags are used as totes and wrappers for gifts. Junk mail is turned into beads for bracelets and necklaces. I could go on and on! I use to do all of this to save money, now I do it because it is the right thing to do. I am thankful for another chance and I show it by helping Mother Earth rather than destroying it. By the way, I also believe I've been blessed for my effort because I've learned to pass it on and I now own my property and home in full, no loans. Wow, what a blessing! Thank you for letting me share my story.

Disposable Razor For Sweaters

I am a homemaker for the elderly. While at a client's house on Tuesday, I saw her "shaving" a sweater she wears. I used to have a sweater shaver, but what she used surprised me. She uses a disposable razor to do this. Went quickly and did a great job. She said "poverty makes you creative". Seemed to work much faster and better than the sweater shavers you can buy.

Home Water Maintenance Tips

Next time you have a helper on hand, go around your home and turn all the valves under your sinks and toilets off and on several times. You may find that minerals in your water have made the valves difficult (or nearly impossible) to turn. It is much better to enlist the aid of a helper and get them taken care of now, than wait until you have a water emergency and cannot get them turned off! If you are not sure of the location or means to turn all the water off in your home (water main or pump), this is also a good time to learn! Make sure each child old enough to be home alone also knows how to turn the water off, as well. Thankfully, these kinds of emergencies are rarely life threatening, but you can surely save yourself a huge mess if you can get the water turned off should the toilet plug or a faucet break!

Earth Friendly Way to Clean Drains

Prevent clogs in your kitchen sink by regular cleaning. First sprinkle baking soda in the drain, with some getting down drain. Then pour some vinegar in drain. This will bubble up. This cleans out scum and deodorizes. This really works great! It is completely safe for children and found in your own kitchen.

Cooking With a 1,000 Watt Electric Grill

I have a 1,000 watt electric grill (Farberware Open Hearth), long since discontinued. No customer support available. This grill has the heat source coming from the bottom and there is nothing on the top. How do I adapt recipes that might be written for a 1400 watt grill?

For instance, I grilled chicken breasts and it took twice as long to cook as the recipe indicated. Bearing in mind that Target's Gold N' Plump chicken brand runs large, how does one adapt a recipe? The recipe called for 20+ mins. Took me closer to an hour. I spent a lot of time wondering if they were ever going to be done. Well, they were delish and they were done, but that was a lot of time spent wondering unnecessarily about a meal.

Growing Kale Seedlings

I grew some kale seedlings in my kitchen on the countertop. They are very spindly. They do not appear to be sturdy enough to survive the night outdoors nor rain. I have been putting them in a sunny spot during the day, and back in the garage at night. How can I thicken the stems or toughen them up?

Shish Kabob Tips

What are the best skewers for shish ka bob so that the food doesn't start to spin when you rotate the skewer? I have the large kabob baskets that have a lid, so all you do is turn the basket over, but cleaning all of those spaces between the metal bars is a pain. Opinions?

Roasting 2 Meats at the Same Time

How do you judge cooking time when roasting 2 meats in same oven/pan? I can figure out how long to roast one, but can't find info on how to judge the time when roasting 2 or more meats in oven at same time. Do I cook them as if they're attached or by the weight of the largest and remove the smaller a bit sooner?

Recipes Using Raspberry Divine Dessert Sauce

I went to the food bank today. I got some things that I really don't know what to do with but they sounded good on the shelf. The first is tastefully simple raspberry divine dessert sauce. Any thoughts or suggestions would be great. They have 2 shelves with some really different kinds of food what you would not normally find at a food bank. I did go to the websites of the manufacture's but didn't find any more info than I already knew.

Why Radon Should Be On Everyone's Radar

According to the Surgeon General, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States-second only to smoking. For non-smokers it ranks number one. You may not realize it, but you and your family are likely to get your greatest exposure to radon at home. In fact, the EPA estimates that 1 out of every 15 homes in the U.S has elevated levels of radon. Is yours one of them?

Recall Alert: Wilbur-Ellis Recalls Rice Protein Concentrate Use in Pet Food

This is a discouraging development, we now have reports of contaminated rice protein. We could see another round of pet food recalls as a result of this finding. Already this week, Natural Balance recalled venison dog and cat foods, due to contaminated rice protein. There could be more recalls due to this in the near future. Important: If your pets show signs of the following; a loss of appetite, lethargy and vomiting, discontinue using your current pet food and take your pet to a vet. It would probably be good to bring a sample of the food to the vet.
