My Frugal Life: Back To School

My frugal life logo.It is back to school for millions of children. I see my grandchildren entering into education. I have to call my daughter to take a picture of my grandson as he enters his first day of school.

By all standards, we are ranking well below the other countries in the teaching department. We are 25 in the world when it comes to math, and I believe we rank even lower in other subjects. That is a sad story. We are failing our kids to give them the best education.

I remember when my daughter started school. I went to the school supply store and almost fainted. My daughter is now 28 years old. The store had it all. Flash cards, erasers, pencils and sharpeners, posters, games; you name it, they had it. They also had very high prices. Being a single mother, I had to come up with some creative ideas to help with my daughter's learning.

  • I made flash cards by buying card stock and making my own addition and subtraction problems.
  • At the thrift shop, I would buy old beat up children's books, and use them to decorate the poster boards that I made.
  • I would use construction paper to cut out shapes. They could learn thier colors and shapes at the same time.
  • I took an old white plastic table cloth and cut it to the size of a small rug. I traced my daughter's feet and shoes, so she could learn how to put her shoes on as well as her left and right.
  • I made a clock out of an old Frisbee. I just used straws for the hand and used stick on numbers for the times.
  • I would cut up the poster board into strips and made number and alphabet lines. The lines I pasted on the back of my daughter's door.

There are so many imaginative ways to help your child to succeed in school, with spending a lot of money. Next post, I will have some web sites to visit, where you can print worksheets for free.
