Costume for Church Play

My church is putting on 'A Night in Bethlehem'. We are all responsible for our costumes. I will be a woman in a Jewish home in Bethlehem at the time of Christs' birth, I need clothing ideas. I have a black under garment that goes to the floor and has long sleeves, that I wear when I serve on the altar. So my body is covered but now what do I do for a robe effect? I have some white material that I got at church today.

Hi,
We have a Bethlehem Walk every year at our church. We have a Bethlehem city built out at the back of the church. Our church gives tours on a first come basis. God has blessed us by being able to do this. My Mom and I make the costumes for this. We have roman soldiers on foot and horseback. We have the tax collector, market place, candle shop, carpenter, blacksmith, innkeeper, kings, the Manger, animals, etc. We go to a store that sells patterns and look in the costume section and there you will find it.

Hope this helps you. By the way, if you're ever down around Alabama the first couple of weeks in December, look us up! You will get a blessing going through the Bethlehem Walk and give God the glory for all the blessings He bestows upon you. This is our last weekend for the Walk, but if you're close enough to us now, just get back to me.God Bless all. Hope this little hint will help on your costume.

Thanks, Carol

You could make an oblong top(just a rectangle folded at its width) with a v slit for the head to put over the black robe - (hopefully the material will be earth-colored, as they didn't have bright dyes then - and of a rougher material so it looks hand-woven) and then tie with a sash of robe or better material and don't forget the head scarf - then wear sandals on your feet...

How about a colorful caftan? You could put it over the black item and tie at waist with rope. Remember women at that time were required by rabinical law to cover their heads when in public. I would love to see your play. We are doing a live Natvity at our church. Merry Christmas everyone! and Happy New Year.
