Visit from a Woodpecker

I had a woodpecker visit me today. (2-11-2005) We have and are still going through a blizzard that has dropped roughly 15 inches of snow. The birds are coming out of every where to eat the seeds and suet. By kate

Pictures with Pizzazz!

To add pizzazz to your pictures, add something extra to them as I have done with this one. I picked this cute dog frame up on clearance for $1.00. Then, I took a piece of brown textured scrapbook paper placed it behind a slightly turned picture of my dog, Gabe. Then I printed out this quote by M. Siegal, "Acquiring a dog may be the only opportunity a human has to choose a relative." It took less than 5 minutes and didn't require fancy equipment or skills: just a printer and Microsoft Word. I've done this to other pictures now and have received several compliments from visiting friends and family. So simple anyone can do it.

Today's Tips

Repair Ripped Window Shades

Here's a quick tip on how to repair your ripped window shades. Take down the shades and put them on a table where you can work with them. As you hold the sides of the tear together, apply several thin coats of clear nail polish to cement the ends back together!

Whiter Whites - Tips For Washing White Clothing

Tips for washing white clothing. Post your ideas.

Ammonia to Wash

A little ammonia added to your wash water with your whites will help make them brighter. Be careful using this with delicates, though, and also don't use it on bright colors as they color may fade.

By Robin Editor's Note: CAUTION! Do not use if you are using bleach.

Shopping Cards

If you shop at a store that has a shopping card (like so many do nowadays), make sure the cashier scans it BEFORE any groceries are rung up. Otherwise, you might not get the sale price. I learned this the hard way the other night when we were overcharged almost $40 because the cashier scanned some items first, then scanned our card. It took almost an extra hour at the service desk to get it straightened out.

Creases in Slacks

To really secure the creases in slacks, make a mixture of half water/half vinegar and saturate a pressing cloth in it. Wring it out and press slacks till dry. Your creases are permanently set.

Melting a Snow Pile

You know how when it snows, and you have to go out and shovel all that "stuff" and the snow piles keep getting higher and higher? Well on days that it is warmer out, go out and put the snow back into the driveway so that it can melt away! My hubby did this today, he went out there 3 times to do this, and we got rid of a lot of snow!

Inexpensive White Boards for Fridge

I have a lot of lists on my fridge and was going to buy dry erase white boards for each list... too expensive. So I purchased clear overhead transparency sheets and pens, Mounted them to the fridge with magnets. Now for little cost I can have as many "white boards" I need.

Bag Balm for Pet's Dry Feet

If your pet gets dry crusty foot pads during the winter, the product Bag Balm is safe to use. If they lick it off it won't hurt them. Try to massage it in if your pet will let you. It's good for dog feet, cat feet, chinchilla feet and other feet I'm sure. (It's good for human feet too.)

Cleaning Up Winter Slush and Salt

A great way to clean up the winter slush and salt that your vehicle leaves behind on your garage floor is to use fresh "snow"! Just scoop a few shovels full on the wet areas and sweep it back and forth with a push broom. Works just like sweeping compound! I've done this for years! Keeps the mess out of your house!

Broken Glass Slivers

When cleaning up broken glass, sweep up as much as you can, then wipe the area with wet (not quite dripping wet) cotton balls. The cotton balls will catch any tiny slivers of glass that the broom can't catch.

Keeping Water Warm When Soaking Feet

Use a styrofoam or insulated cooler to keep water warm when soaking your feet. I was using a small plastic dishpan, but found that the water cooled off too quickly. I took an old cooler, warmed it first with hot water, then refilled it with foot soak solution and water as warm as needed. The insulation kept the water warm/hot for a long time.

Organizing Jewelry Tips

Tips to help you organize your jewelry. Post your ideas.

Organizing Jewelry

To keep my jewelry organized, I got some small plastic resealable bags at the craft store. Each set (necklace and matching earrings or ring or bracelet) is stored in a separate bag. The bags were pretty cheap and this way I don't have to search for all the parts of a set and the necklaces don't get tangled together. It also keeps the sterling silver pieces stay untarnished longer since they aren't exposed to air as much.

Tuna Cream Cheese Spread

Ingredients:

  • 1 can tuna, drained
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • Green olives, chopped (optional)

Directions:

Blend all ingredients well. Use olives to taste. This makes a great spread for sandwiches or crackers. You can also use black olives if you prefer the taste or pickle relish (well-drained) for a more traditional tuna salad flavor.

A Guide to Successful Obedience Training
By Jon Dunkerley

Showing off your dog in front of friends and family is something that I personally love to do. Having an obedient, happy slab of lab is like having an obedient happy child. Have you ever been in a supermarket only to come across a screaming baby and a blushing parent? I know I have, and my first reaction is to get as far away from the disturbing scene as possible. I have also been in the undesirable situation of being in public with an disobedient dog and I can say, I feel the pain of the frantic parent!
