Roll up a thin section of newspaper to use as a tube to wrap your holiday lights around. They stay organized, compact, and it makes it easier to string lights right off the 'tube'.

Another alternative is to use the empty gift wrap rolls. I cut a slit on each opening to slip the beginning of the light strand in and at the end of it also.
I use the extension cord winders. Guys use these to wind their big orange shop cords on them. I have noticed something similar last year in the stores for Christmas lights. But these are much cheaper and hold a lot more lights.
