Give Trick or Treaters a candy container if they come with plastic bags to your door. We live in town where we get at least 75+ treaters to our door on Halloween. Two years ago, my husband noticed some kids who came to the door were only carrying a grocery plastic food bag to get their candy in and not even wearing a costume of any type or just had painted faces. They look so sad as well.

So we started buying any kind of candy containers that were a Halloween theme that we saw in yard sales or after Halloween discount sales in stores and stock up on them throughout the year. Then when we have at least 20 containers we'd fill those with lots of extra candy and I print out a little card that hangs from the side of the container that says "Here's a special treat just for you, enjoy your candy bucket, Jesus Loves you too!" And we have them placed by the doorway at easy reach so that any child that comes to the door with just a plastic bag gets their own candy container. Their faces light up so big with a smile. Happy Fall and Halloween Everyone! It's just around the corner. :-)

well, I may have it say God Loves you or etc. I just know that alot of the treaters who come here are dropped off in cars while the parent waits in the car for them and we have a very BIG Steep concreate driveway too climb and the ones I speak of (and I mean little kids some less that 2yrs) are the ones walking up with the drivers waiting and those are the ones with just plain plastic grocerie store bags and they do not seem excited at all about treating for candy they even seem sad as though they are exspected to do it. Believe it or not there are some grown ups who have them go around simply so they have the candy, I have had grown women come to the door with no kids saying the candy is for the baby in the car. While I do not know the situation or the kind of life that those sad looking children lead from there parents, I do know it breaks my heart to think if they are going to trick or treat for any reason it should be fun and enjoyable on there part. So to give them the candy bucket filled with extra candy lets me HOPE that they will get to enjoy the night a little more than if they see others with costumes, candy buckets, who have them and they don't not understanding why. It may be that the parents cannot afford them, it may be that the parents are having them to treat just for there selves, it may be they are sad because they are abused. I don't know. I just know that to bring a smile to a childs face and let them know that they are loved by others and there CREATOR is what we felt lead to do by the means of adding the note. We also add just for them to there containers items like pencils, little toys, stickers etc. things they may not get to enjoy that will brighten there hearts. Alot of people do not even believe in halloween or go treat or treating because they fill it is wrong. I guess due to the way its portaryed with ghosts, witches etc. I feel its just a night of fun with treats given & nothing more. When we are passed literature on the streets by hand or at the knock of your door. Each person can choose to read it or not and come to there own conclusion of what they feel it means to them. So I hope that the poster who left her comment saying I should not put the note in side can see now why I do for those kids and maybe even the parents who might read it. And let them know that God does love them. And note or not, the opportunity to see there faces lite up to see they got something as others were carrying is a blessing in its self to know they felt thought of. So I hope others will do this too if you have extra pails laying around that you do not use and let a child with less have that special moment. We all get that opportunity to do the same thing at christmas time with the shoe boxes and giving out coats to the ones who need them or food packages. And so when we saw there sad faces and having less the same idea arrose for halloween night to be able to give to the ones with less. And I would of done the same thing even if I had not thought of adding the note. I do respect everyones oppinion though that was posted here. I feel thats part of what thriftyfun is all about to give ideas that were not thought of and oppinions on those ideas to make them better or differant. Julie

oooooooo thats a tricky one

i hope i dont get told off for saying this , my daughter is 11 and her best friend for the last few years is a very devout little muslim girl, i have always listened with interest to her way of life and her customs etc

one day when we were talking about the koran and the bible etc and the differences and similarities i couldnt resist saying to her that in the bible it states "Nobody comes to the Father except through Jesus Christ" and i explained that to her as best as i could ,

i wouldnt dream of ramming it down her throat in any way and i would hate it if her parents said dont play with that girl or her family anymore , they are very strict and religious and i cant imagine what would happen if thhis girl ever converted when she was older.

However sometimes as a christian you just have to do what you have to do and take risks and be brave and i would say to the lady providing the trick or treat buckets to show gods love in Jesus name lto carry on regardless of the denominations who knock at her door,

you have to stand up for your faith and that might be the only christian love those children get,

it also might sow a seed that leads that child to God they might remember that act of kindness and get to thinking about the fact that Jesus does love them

so i think its important to witness in this way as there are a lot of people who have been led to God through such small acts ,, in short well done to you and keep up the good work in my opinion

I think it's a great idea but the phrase regarding Jesus loves you. The kids that come trick or treating in our are are of all denominations. I would consider using a phrase that does not have a religious reference.

What a great idea. You made some underprivelaged kids very happy, I'm sure. I will keep this in mind when/if we move back to town and have trick or treaters again.
