Make sure they are throughly cleaned. Especially around the handles, as that is where most buildup occurs. I would suggest updating all of your hardware after your painting is complete, that will really add to the look. Here is a complete step by step on how to paint kitchen cabinets.

I painted my stained cupboards in my last home. first i washed them very well with TSP (found at Home Stores), then rinse, rinse and rinse. Sand with a palm sander. Prime (I used Zinssers water based). then paint. i used white hi-gloss enamel by Behr (Home Depot). Loved the cabinets. Beautiful!! Good luck.

Depends on what you have cleaned them with. Is there a heavy build up of wax or oil? Then that would need to be stripped off
