This is Braveheart. I've always enjoyed the birds, squirrels, and butterflies in my yard. I often sit on my front steps and toss peanuts (in the shell) to the squirrels. This one became a "friend" about three years ago when she began edging closer and closer to me. Instead of tossing the peanuts, I began holding a peanut in my hand and talking to her. Eventhough she is female, I named her Braveheart because she had the courage to come close, and now she even likes to be petted. She also chases away any other squirrel who gets too near. When I'm stressed I find that spending some quiet time with her is very calming.

You are so lucky..we have been feeding our squirrels for over 20 years now..we have the same mothers returning to our boxes year after year, not one in all the years would EVER venture close!!
Wish I knew your secret. I raised a family of 5 one time and finished raising two of my sister in laws.
It is truly an experience!!
I also used to have a squirrel buddy,I called him digger.
He used to stand up and look in my Mom's storm door
until I would come and give him peanuts.
After I moved out, they still had to give him the nuts.
Enjoy it!You truly are lucky.
wow....that sure is special to make friends with a cute animal...hubby has been making friends with squirrels and rabbits in our backyard this year. its so adorable to watch
Hi Cindy,
Consider yourself among the chosen. To be able
to make a friend of a little wild creature is one of
the greatest joys. My husband and I have raised
6 baby squirrels from the time their eyes were barely
open to the day when each of them were set free on
the big oak tree and didn't return that night. It took
weeks for them to feel secure enough to remain outside, but we wanted them to be free and to live
their lives in a normal squirrel way.
We raised 2 sets of nest mates, (twins maybe) and
twice, we only had one at the time to care for. They
are the most precious little fellas and the most
entertaining of "pets". If you have 2 together, it's
much easier, as the ones who you raise alone must
have a playmate, and they'll take up all your time.
That's what little squirrels do...play all day long. The ground squirrels are totally diurnal.
We are trying to make friends with the large numbers
of wild squirrels around us now, but there are so many of them, and they need us only to provide
the peanuts and other treats they love. They also like cracked corn, so they're getting a lot of that which our 5 pet laying hens leave as they range free
every day.
I'm so glad that you are enjoying your little friend. I'm sure she is a very special one. Thank you for sharing her with us.
Wishing you all the best,
