Scenery: Mt. Rushmore (South Dakota)

I have been wanting to see Mt. Rushmore for several years. We finally got there this year and it was rainy and foggy. The fog lifted for about five minutes when my daughter snapped this photo.

I really like it because it's a view you don't normally see of the Presidents of Mt. Rushmore. If you go to the on-site museum you will read that Mr. Borglum (the head sculptor) spent a lot of time planning the heads so that they would be interesting in all types of weather and lighting.

Cabbit (American Shorthair)

Cabbit is an 8 year old solid white American Shorthair cat. In April 2001, I found him on the side of the road where there were no other cats or houses around. He looked to be about 3 or 4 weeks old (very small.)

I brought him home and he nursed a momma cat who had just gave birth to only one kitten. She took Cabbit in as her own. I kept him and he has been the best cat ever.

He fetches! He carries around a stretchy rubber frog and stares at you until you throw it for him. When he's tired of fetching he hides the frog under a doormat or furniture. He doesn't meow, instead he makes a chirping sound like "aaah aaah".

Mowgli (Siberian Husky) and Shai (Malamute)

Mowgli the white open faced one and Shai the one with a mask. Mowgli is 7 and Shai is 2. Mowgli is a Siberian Husky and Shai is a Malamute.

I got both my dogs as re-homes from previous owners Shai first as a 7 month old pup and Mowgli as a 7 year old to keep her company because she was chewing my house to bits.

They like to wrestle with each other, swim in the lake and laze about whenever possible. Oh, and eating my work shoes whenever they can. They are both wonderful dogs very loving and loyal, full of mischief into everything.

Today's Tips:

Reusing Old Sheets

Just wanted to share an idea with you. I was at our local thrift shop to buy a sheet to re-cover the pads in our dogs cages and I bought a beautiful sheet for a $1.50 and find it's too nice to use in dog beds. Don't know what I will use it for now but got to thinking about all the decorating possibilities sheets have. I know some people are on very tight budgets. This might be an idea that could help.

Recycle Event Flowers

Remember that flowers can be recycled, too! After an event, many a flower arrangement will end up in the trash! So rescue it, re-cut the flower stems and re-arrange the flowers at home. Why toss them when they still have life in them? With pruning and re-arranging the flowers can often last a week! And having fresh flowers is such a luxury, isn't it?

Reuse Old Hammock as Under Deck Float Holder

Reuse an old hammock by stapling it with some slack in it to the underside of your deck. Makes and excellent holder for pool floats to keep the wind from blowing them away! Bonus: the floats can drain through the hammock so no mildew!

Fill Detergent Cup at End of Dishwasher Cycle

Immediately upon emptying my dishwasher I put the detergent in the cup. That way if the cup is closed, the dishes are dirty. I use the little packets and they don't dry out. Saves a lot of "are the dishes clean or dirty".

Cleaning Wax Off Countertops

Anyone who's ever said "just wait for it to dry and chip it off" has never actually tried to clean wax off a nice shiny countertop. I spilled candle wax and it wasn't the kind of wax that gets hard. It stayed soft and gooey even after I laid a bag off ice on it to freeze it.

Here's what I did to get it off. I scraped up as much wax as I could with a non-metal instrument (I used a wooden chopstick, but I bet a credit card or Popsicle stick would work). I got a small stack of paper towels and my clothes iron. I put a paper towel over the wax and ironed the paper towel. I repeated this a few times with new clean paper towels, sopping up more wax as I went along. Once most of the wax was gone and while the remaining wax was still warm, I cleaned the rest off with window cleaner.

I even tried this on an old wax spill and it worked beautifully!

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

Nancy went to the emergency room for medical treatment on two badly burned ears . "What happened" asked the doctor.

"Well, I was ironing while I was also watching a soap on TV, when the phone rang. I answered the iron."

The doctor nodded, "But what happened to the other ear?"

"Well, no sooner had I hung up," said Nancy, "when the same guy called again, asking what all the screaming was about."

Refinishing a Bird Cage

I have a bird cage that my feathered friend has removed most of the painted from. Is there a safe and inexpensive DIY way to refinish the cage? New cages for that size bird are over $200 new and the cage itself is still in good condition just the finish is damaged. I don't care so much about looks but the exposed metal gets rusted and I'm sure that using her beak on the metal can't be healthy for my bird.

Repairing a Steam Machine

I bought a steam machine about 1 year ago. As I am not very organized and not a good housekeeper I haven't used it but a few times. I was using it today and two of the scrubber head things came off. The one is a scrubby that I guess was glued onto plastic and the other was like a large scrub brush attached somehow to the base. They both came apart. What can I do? Should I try the company? I bought this thing to help me clean my bathroom and it breaks while cleaning the tub.

Pool Vacuum Not Filtering Water

The vacuum filter is putting back dirty water into the pool. Every time we vacuum the pool, within the minute even after we cleaned the filter out, the returning water from the filter is just as dirty as the water that was vacuumed out. Any suggestion? We'll appreciate it. Thank you.

Bathroom Paint Color Advice

I am trying to update a small bathroom. I have an acrylic, marble toned vanity. It looks sort of like a tan, grayish swirl, with a few faint reddish streaks. I love the light greens and blues for paints, but have tried 3 and they either look like way too much color, or dark and boring.

There is little light coming through the window. The faucets are brushed nickel. I thought about a neutral, but it seems too boring. I need some advice before I end up way overspending on paint choices I don't like.

Thanks,
