Making a Silk Bridal Bouquet

Thank goodness the days of HUGE Bridal bouquets has passed! Small, round bouquets with stems showing are being used more often in Weddings. Your local florist would be glad to bunch up a cluster of roses and tie with ribbon but believe me you'd pay dearly! And within a couple of days there is nothing left but photos of your flowers. By making a silk bouquet you have it for years to come, to keep with all your other wedding momentoes.

To make a bouquet you will need:

  • A Wilton bouquet holder (less than $3 at Walmart)
  • 10-12 silk roses
  • wire cutters
  • A roll of green floral tape
  • Ribbon you choose to tie on and make ribbon loops (optional--for added color).
  • Stiff wire

Instructions:

The bouquet holder is a small circle of styrofoam incaged in a plastic holder with an attached handle.

In choosing roses, to make them more realistic looking, remove the end of the flower (I think it's called the calyx) and remove extra petals which make it look fully bloomed, leaving the last row and middle of the flower. This will make a small but more realistic looking rose. When buying roses, choose a more CLOTH feeling rose.

To form the bouquet, clip stems down to 5-6" long and beginning in the center insert a rose. Following the circle pattern fill your holder with closely fit roses, using the leaves as well for greenery. Make small loops of ribbon and attach to stiff wire, and wrap tightly with floral tape, inserting them into the cluster of flowers. To have stems showing at the bottom cut the end of the stem to your desired length and holding them around the handle, wrap tightly with floral tape at the top (so as not to show) and leave the rest of the stem showing.

Tie on ribbon and wire onto the top of the handle also wrapping with floral tape to cover the wire. This makes a beautiful rose cluster bouquet your Bride will be proud to carry. Many people at my Daughter's wedding were surprised to find out that hers was not real--but silk flowers and she proudly displays them in her Curio cabinet, still as pretty as the day she used them.

Backyard Drive In Movies

A fun summer party idea is a back-yard drive-in. You simply need a laptop computer that can play DVD's, a projector that connects to the laptop to project your image onto the screen, and a screen. We borrowed the projector from my husband's office, and made our own screen out of leftover TYVEK house wrap (the kind they put around a house under the siding). We used packing tape to attach the Tyvek to PVC pipe at the top and bottom, and then ran rope through the pipe to hang the screen from hooks on the back of the house. The bottom PVC was narrower, and weighted the screen to keep it straight. For storage we got a large diameter PVC pipe and put a cap on one end and a screw cap on the other end, and just rolled the screen and slid it inside.

You can decide what dimension screen works best for your house - the bigger the screen, the bigger the picture - but if your projector is not that bright you should not try to go too big. Also be aware of "light pollution" from streetlights as that will affect how brightly the movie shows up.

We borrowed a popcorn popper (theater style) for a concession stand, and bought candy as well to serve.

Be sure to have some mosquito repellent available for your guests as well.

Unique Wedding Dress From A Vintage Pantsuit

When I got married, OK, it was 10 years ago and it wasn't for the first or last time, but let's skip over that part. Great wedding, though, and my dress has an interesting story. You see, it began life as a brocade formal pants suit, of 1960's vintage. I found it at an antiques show, and while I detest the pants suit in general, I thought it was beautiful and had an attractive neckline. So, with a little help from my mother-in-law, it was turned into a dress (let's just say there was plenty of material in the legs!), and she added a simple tulle train to the back. I took it home, and spent quite a few evenings stitching pretty crystal beads on the brocade at the neck and bust area. It looked very beautiful and expensive, and cost, oh, probably $50.00 ($20.00 for the pants suit, $10.00 in tulle, and $20.00 in beads) and I recently saw a dress in a bridal show that looked a great deal like it for around $2800.00. I still have the dress, if not the husband!

Making a Bed

When making your bed, put the fitted sheet on one corner of the foot then go around to the opposite side to the head of the bed and put the sheet on and finish. You will never again make your bed any other way, no more of the sheet slipping off.

Wall Baskets For Bathroom Organizing

Need more storage space in your bathroom for all of your toiletry items? If you're like me, your bathroom cabinet can't hold all of your beauty items and causes constant disarray. We found a simple solution by purchasing inexpensive but well-made rectangular baskets (without handles) and arranging them on our bathroom wall, securing them with screws. It provided immediate decor for the bathroom and tons more storage space for all of your beauty items.

Look For Free Putting Greens

We are lucky to live very near to a lovely urban park. My husband is a golfer, and we can get out and use the putting green at the municipal golf course gratis. So I am learning to putt! And a bucket of balls is cheap, too. It's a lovely setting. No wonder people like to golf...

Print Grocery Coupons From The Internet

I have always been an occasional coupon clipper, but it always seemed like taking the time to cut out each coupon was more trouble than it was worth. Fortunately, I have found a much easier way to get coupons, on the Internet. There are actually hundreds of websites with grocery coupons, including brand websites and newspaper websites.

I use http://thriftyfun.coupons.com because it has a bunch of coupons in one place. Every week before I go grocery shopping, we check this site to see if there are any coupons that I could use. Then you can just print them out and take them to the store. They scan at the register just like traditional paper coupons. I usually end up saving about $20 each trip. It is easier than clipping coupons from the Sunday inserts, and we have found that these coupons are often worth more than paper coupons.

By Irene from Flagstaff, AZ

Editor's Note: Thanks, Irene for posting something about this. Coupons.com created that site for us about a year ago and we stopped promoting it because some people complained that they weren't able to redeem the coupons. It's wonderful to hear from someone who is having success with it. Has anyone used our coupon page and been able to redeem the coupons? Please post your experiences below.

Frugal Way To Hang Curtains

I was at Home Depot with a friend today and I found a less expensive solution for hanging curtains. While in the plumbing aisle, I spotted some Copper Plated, Galvanized and PVC 2-Hole Clips in various sizes. I realized that instead of spending the usual $5+ in my local closeout store on each set of curtain rods, I could screw 2 of those clips above my windows and then just buy dowels (or pvc piping) to hang my curtains from. My friend thought it was a good idea so I thought I'd share it here.

Empty Milk Carton for Watering Plants

I really didn't know where to put this tip, it covers so many aspects! Instead of lugging home a bottle/packet of commercial plant fertilizer, try this quick and easy tip. When you finish a carton of milk, fill the carton with water and use it to water your plants. Your plants will flourish, your wallet will flourish and the land fill will have one less carton to worry about as you didn't have to buy a special product to do the job! And there is one more plus, as you finish the milk carton you stand a better chance of remembering to water that poor house plant in the corner!

Use an Old Freezer as a Pantry

Someone gave us a huge used upright freezer. It worked fine, but I didn't really need THAT much freezer space and it needed to be defrosted way too often for me. So I started using it as a 'pantry'. I have very little cabinet space so I keep all my canned goods, pasta, cereal, and even paper products in it. When I have company they get a kick out of when I go into the freezer for paper plates!

Starting a Budget

I am asking for help with my finances. Just recently I stopped working my second job because of the very long house. Now I just have one job and the problem is that it pays bi-weekly. Because I have just one income I have been behind on my bills the credit cards are at the limit and above some are in collection because of late or non-payments. I just need to be able to pay of the bills and save some money. I tried the envelope budgeting. How do I start a basic budget without any large problems, something very very simple on a bi-weekly paycheck of a small amount. Once again, how does the old fashion envelopes work?

Buying New Foam for Cushions

Any idea where to get new foam for sofa cushions? I found a site online where you can measure your own cushions and send away for the foam, but measuring myself makes me REALLY nervous, especially since I have 5 cushions to replace and the price is $75-$100 per cushion - that seems really high. But the foam on this sofa just DID NOT hold up from us using it, and it's only 3 years old. BTW - no warranty left on the sofa.

Cleaning Antique Metal Fighting Hands

I bought some ancient, as in really old, metal fighting gloves. When I received them they are covered with rust. I cleaned them with paper towels, then used olive oil. There must be something better to clean and preserve. I had to scrub the rust off my hands. I didn't want to wash the metal because I thought it might hurt them. I've attached a picture.

Something is Burrowing Holes in My Deck

I've noticed something is burrowing a small holes on a railing of our backyard deck. I've not seen or heard anything unusual, but there are new holes (about the size of a dime) and a small mound of fresh wood shavings located directly beneath it. I know it's not termites, but is there another type of insect, bird or rodent doing this? I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Food Savings While Visiting Disney World

This will be my daughter Mackenzie's first time going to Disney in Florida. We saved and saved for this trip. I found a FANTASTIC deal on the non stop flight there and back for $76.33 and we got a 4 star hotel for $31.00 a night. Passes for Disney were a huge chunk out of our money, but again I found a fantastic deal on those. 6 days of passes for 215.00. We are super, super excited about this trip.

The reason I am writing to all of you is to ask for cheaper ways to eat while we are there besides packing our lunches. Maybe some of you know of little places that you maybe have been while you were there or just thriftier ways to get our meals and we do need to get those little souvenirs. : ) We are going when it will be the MOST hottest, but again that saved us money. We leave at the end of August.

Any tips please send them.

Thank you,
Tracey from Gregory, MI

Free Landscaping Programs

Are there any free programs that doesn't come with spam, viruses, or spyware that I can use to plan my landscaping on? I'm just moving into a place and there are many things I'd like to have, but I know what it would look like if I don't plan it... like a disaster. I can see great things in my mind, but they sometimes come out horrible! LOL

I live in Ohio and it's now the end of July. I won't even be in my new place until August. What kind of plants can I enjoy until it gets too cold?

Also, I'd like to plant some evergreens around the skirting of my trailer to help insulate it from the cold. Any ideas?
