I have a small male pom weighing nearly 4 lbs. He is having trouble in the potty training area. I let him out in a safe place and also keep potty pads on the floor for emergencies (he
uses the pads fairly well but when I allow him out of the enclosed area he pees again on the carpet even after just eliminating on the pad).

He is shy and doesn't like to come when he is called. I have tried coaxing with treats but he just wants to run and play. When it is time for him to come indoors he will scratch to let me
know but then will not enter unless I move across the room and then return to close the door.

He lets me hold him and cuddle when I do catch him. I have been very gentle in scolding when he makes mistakes and always reward his good actions with treats. Could it because I am the "one" that always puts him in his crate and scolds him?

Please, someone give me some advice. My main concern is the potty training - he is nearly 6 months old and knows because when I say outside he is eager to go.

Thanks,
Nelwyn

Hey, Okay i recently just bought two puppies, brothers. Their Pomeranian mixed with Chihuahua. Now, we ended up getting two, thinking they would keep each other company & there would be less stress... BIG MISTAKE. One constantly picks on the other, bites me & growls ALL THE TIME. it's getting out of control. we think that if the problem continues, we'll have to get rid of one of them. I havent slept in weeks because they refuse to sleep, they would rather fight to the point of hurting each other, & im tired of yelling, and stressing out.
help! : (

EVERYTHING will be ok! When training your pom, anything, always make it a positive experience. Your little baby is so ignorant to the world; you need to positively train them. Read books, buy magazines - become an educated teacher. You are this little dog's teacher.
my handsome pom learned his name, sit and the come command within 20 minutes when he was just 8 weeks. You can do this :) just become educated and adopt a way of training that will best suit you. learn about the breed, recognize his personality traits vs. his breed traits.
I live on the 17th floor of an apartment building and I am a full time student. potty training is obviously not simple because I leave his food out all day with his water (he grazes). I have pee pads in three spots around the house and I take him out at least every three hours for a walk. At 16 weeks, my pup is finally potty trained to pee/poop outside and use the pee pads to pee on in between outings. Fine with me!
Good luck everyone! I hope all smoother your poms as much as me :)

I have a two year old pom that I just got. Her previous owners did not properly house train her. She does go on a potty pad, but I think that is just a crutch that is keeping her from being fully house trained and so I do not have it in the house. Are there any tips for training an older dog like this?

hi I read your concern about potty training and I will give advice. It is not your fault for him not potty trained! 50 % is your puppy and 50% you. I am 13 years old. You may think "how is she going to help me?", well I have a chihuahua, and a pom. If he marks the pee, it is about the size of a half dollar coin.

If he is not neutered then that may be a wise investment. My pom. is turning 10 months. She has accidents still, but they are from excitable pee when I return from school. So don't count those as accidents. When your dog has accidents, do you use cleaning spray designed for potty accidents? If not buy some. I used natures miracle and let me tell ya, it is a miracle. If you don't use special spray then your dog will smell himself and will keep going where he smells himself.

I would suggest getting your carpets cleaned professionally. So its a clean slate and he won't smell himself. Do not free feed! This will make it unpredictable for when your dog has to pee or poop. At the max. 3 times daily watch your dog all the time!

After your dog is done eating/drinking take him out some dogs take longer or shorter to pee or poop so let him take his time outside try to not use puppy pads because if you do then they get used to going in the house. If he does go in the house don't hit or yell his name at all! He will become confused and scared. Schedule feed your dog and water give water after playing while eating, etc. I hope this helps you so let me no how it goes. Remember don't give up and it may vary when the training is complete. Thanks, shelby

My pom is 10 weeks old. He has a horrible habit of going pee pee and poo in his cage. I am gone from the house only for a few hours. I feel he does not care if he pottys where he sleeps. How can I fix this? I take him out at least 9 times a day and when he shows he needs to go out, but he still comes in the house after going outside and goes potty. How can I fix this? How can I get him to not soil his cage. I'm tired of cleaning towels an his cage.

I have a 13 week old Pomeranian and am still having issues with her not being potty trained. She will go where ever she pleases. I have a litter box for her and keep her confined in the kitchen when I am not home but return to poop on the floor and several potty spots. I have been working with her for 3 weeks now and am getting frustrated.

I am getting a new pom in a few weeks. This is my first dog and I am a little concerned about training him. I leave for work at 7:00 and I usually arrive home at 4:45. I know this is a long time to be away from him. Do you think litter training him will be the best way to take care of him. I can keep him in the bathroom while I am at work and my dad can possibly check on him at lunch time.

Also, should I leave some food out for him when I am at work. Would he be ok not eating all day.

I own a little pomeranian girl who is potty trained now at 11 weeks old. I live on the 9th floor of a condo so I trained her on wee pads and a litter box. When I first brought her home she went on the pads every time she had to go. Once in a while she would get excited and accidentally let out a little urine when she was playing, but otherwise she goes on the pads. As far as going #2.... She used to go poo on the floor and then I would put it in the litter box and show her that that is where it belongs. She finally got the hang of it after a little while and now she goes in there all of the time Pomeranians actually are known for being intelligent (despite what the person below wrote).

My beloved cousin loves pomeranians. She has had many. She has potty trained them all, without 100% success. They are cute animals with small bladders, require a lot of time, and unfortunately are not known for being highly intelligent although they are trainable to a degree. You may need to put a diaper on your dog when you cannot monitor it with your full attention at all times. You can also put in in a pen or crate lined with pee pads when you are not able to monitor it at all, and when you must leave the house. They are high maintenance animals with special needs. One additional difficulty is the long, thick hair, which also becomes a challenge with bowel/bladder hygiene. What can I say? Beagles are easier.

Hi I'm Cassidy I'm 11 years old and I just got a pomeranian puppy and wanted to help you. to potty train your puppy get a thing called a pee pad you can get them at the pet store. When the puppy goes to the washroom on the pee pad her or his sent will stay on there until you throw it out. If the puppy misses or does not go on the pee pad take him or her to the acsident and point to it and say NO!! or BAD!! Next time when you see the puppy sniffing and circling a spot to GO you know what take it outside to the spot where you think it will work for the puppy to go to the washroom at. To train your pom buy some treats that you think the puppy will like and show her or him what you want it to do. For an exsample shake a paw. sit the puppy down and take it's paw and shake it your self and say SHAKE A PAW then give the puppy the treat. Then the next couple of times you do that tell the puppy Shake a paw and see if the puppy does it it's self if it doesn't keep trying it yourself. And do that for all of the other tricks. To groom you should start brushing her right when you get the pom so she gets use to it quickly! I hope I could give you some tips on training your pom when ever you get it that is and I hope they work. Well got to go bye!!

Ps-Never give up!!!!!!!!!!!!!
