Depending on where a plant evolved and also how plant breeders developed it, it may be more or less able to withstand cold or hot climates. Plants originally from tropical or subtropical regions are generally tender. Those plants that can tolerate cold temperatures and frost are considered hardy --to a lesser or greater extent. Choose plants appropriate to your region by considering the limits of your hardiness zone.
