Make a Handbag from Chenille Bedspreads

If you have any of those old chenille bedspreads around, put it to good use and make a handbag. I made this one to show off the pink center in the daisy. That part is the flap of the bag. Then on the other side I put on a pocket to hold my sunglasses and phone.

Cookie Bear (Poodle/Terrier Mix)

My doggie's name is Cookie Bear. We think he is a mix of a poodle and a terrier around 4.5 years old. A caring man heard Cookie crying in the bushes late one night as he walked home from work. He was about 6 months old and someone had abandoned him. Thank goodness he was found by a caring animal lover and taken in.

I had never had dogs before (I love cats but developed allergies as I got older) but decided that maybe it was time to get another pet. So I put an advert in the local paper asking for an older dog that was house trained. All my friends told me that I would never find such a dog but lo and behold, the first person to answer my advert was Leandros' mum. She told me that they had had Cookie for about a year but could no longer keep him since he was a one-person dog and she had three large dogs of her own. Every time one of them got close to her, Cookie would growl and chase them away. As much as she loved him she knew that he would be better off being the center of attention in a one-pet household. So, after several attempts at a meeting, she drove him up to me. It was a 1.5 hour ride!

Cookie and I bonded the moment we met and although Pauvlina wasn't planning on leaving him with me that day, she felt that it was the right thing to do and so that is how I got my lovely little Cookie Bear!

Cookie enjoys a two-hour walk around the city each morning that ends up at a large park where he plays with all his doggie friends. He was so shy and scared when he first came to me but now, three years later, he is very self-assured and comfortable with me. He also loves to chase cats but if one turns around to stand its ground, Cookie freaks out!! He grew up in his first home with cats so he likes them and is only chasing them for the thrill of running.

Cookie is a wonderful companion and is just the right thing for me at this time in my life. He is a good watch dog and a joy to watch as he confidently walks around the city with me. He was very easy to train and has never done one thing bad in the years that I have had him. He is just a perfect little thing. Well, he has a weight problem as I do so we both need to diet!

Homemade Oil Diffuser/Warmer

I made my own oil diffuser/warmer. I recycled all of the items I used. This is really cool. Here is a list of the items used.

  • an old glass light shade
  • an old shot glass
  • a child's round plastic mirror that I was about to throw out
  • a rope light leftover from Christmas
  • a part leftover from a discarded ceiling fan
  • a few drops of orange essential oil - my favorite scent ;)
  • optional: a couple of pieces of a new sponge
You would put these items together, very simple, then put however many drops of essential or fragrance oils to suit your scent in the shot glass, and plug in the rope light and enjoy for hours while the rope light gently heats the oil. Be careful not to go to sleep with the light plugged in.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Donate Blankets To Feed Stores Or Vets

Before tossing out old blankets, bedsheets, comforters, towels and jackets that you no longer need or want, check with local feed stores. One local feed store accepts donations of these product to use, for cleanups or for comforting, when they have shot clinics for local pets. Other uses could be for kennels, animal rescues, animal control, or at your local veterinarian's office.

Buying a Wedding Dress on eBay

I purchased my brand new Mori Lee Blu Line wedding dress on eBay for $185 including the shipping. The dress was being sold by a bridal shop that was clearing out unsold inventory. It is BEAUTIFUL and fit me perfectly, without alterations. You may be unable to return it, unless the seller specifies that you can, so read the description very carefully.

Repairing an Imitation Oak Finish

I bought a nice oak look cabinet at a thrift store for my redecorated bathroom but it had some scratches and nicks. At the dollar store, I bought a bottle of brown liquid shoe wax and with a cotton ball went gently over the nicks, scratches and worn spots. It looks like a new cabinet. Now, if I could only remember where I put the knobs I would like to put on it. LOL

Making Pillowcases for Gifts

Are you looking for a fun, inexpensive and easy craft to make as gifts for the Holidays?

Try making pillowcases. There are many simple patterns online (the link below is one of a few different ones that I have used and has good illustrations) and since it takes such a little bit of fabric, you can really stretch your dollars and give everyone a nice gift. I have 19 nieces and nephews, and last year EVERYONE got pillowcases - I was able to pick out fun colors or themes that matched their personalities, hobbies or interests - and since I bought the fabrics a little at a time when they were on sale or I had a coupon, each one cost me around $3 to make, so I was able to stay within a very tight budget. The kids love them, and some of the parents even asked if they were getting ones this year.

Use Perfume Samples As Air Fresheners

Sometimes I receive gifts of perfumes, colognes, etc. that I don't particularly like the smell of for wearing myself. I never waste any of them. I use them as room fresheners. Just squirt a little toward the ceiling of the room and the smell will stay around for quite a while. Saves on buying air fresheners and you are using something that would either get tossed or just sit in a cupboard. If its not aerosol, just put it in an empty spray bottle and use that. I've even been known to mix two different fragrances together with no problems! Just test a little on your arm first if you are not quite sure.

Laminate Wrapping Paper For Themed Cake Decoration

Quickly, easily, and inexpensively, create a cake decoration for your child's birthday cake. Find gift wrap or other paper with a themed picture on it such as Spiderman or Barbie. Cut it out and laminate it. Just before presenting the cake, lay the laminated picture on the cake, and pipe a little icing around the edges, if desired. The picture can be as large or small as you like. I have done this for my twins' birthday (two cakes!) and used wrapping paper with 5-inch pictures of the various Disney princesses.

Reusing Printer Paper

I decided a bit ago to recycle the paper that comes from our printer, we always for some reason get an extra one or two when we print something. I used to tear them up for scratch paper, but I started turning them over and put them back into the printer to use again. My husband thought that was a good idea.

Removing Age Stain From Silk

I think there is an age stain on a pure silk blouse. I've tried soaking in napisan but the stain has spread (a friend gave the blouse to me so that's why I'm not 100% sure about the stain - it's rust coloured!)

Garbage Bag Made From Newspaper

A few days ago someone posted a tip to use newspaper as a garbage bag. They said to line garbage with loose newspapers and at the end of the day just crumple papers with the days trash up into your outside garbage can. I like this idea but was wondering if their is a way to make an actual "bag" from the newspaper that would work as well as a normal plastic garbage bag. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

Good Quality Fabric Scissors

Good scissors for cutting through multiple layers of thick fabric. Any suggestions?
I just dulled out two pairs and they cost between $20 and $30 each.

The more expensive one was re-sharpened and I am not impressed. A friend told me that the quality of the re-sharpening has more to do with the steel content than the skill of the operator.

Chicken Noodle Soup Stain On Blue T-Shirt

My daughter got a large yellow stain on her shirt while she was eating Lipton chicken noodle soup. I have tried several things unsuccessfully, the yellow base in the chicken bouillon seems impossible to remove. HELP! This shirt was only worn once! It is 100% cotton (t-shirt material) and it is blue so I am unable to use bleach, any ideas?
