As a special surprise for your college kids, mail them a roll of quarters. That way, they can do their mailing (and laundry) on you and maybe even have something left over to buy a treat from a vending machine!

NEVER a good idea to send money in the mail !!
besides most colleges have a card that can have money put on it from relatives,etc.. and they use this card for pop machines, washers, dryers etc...
my daughter e mailed and called me more than anything and she too had a dorm size fridge in her room

As a college student, this is an excellent idea! My school also has card access to laundry machines and vending machines, but they are often times broken. Having quarters is like a delicacy in college and you never know where to go to get change. While e-mails are fast and cheap for keeping in touch, packages are much better. Transfering money into our accounts and homemade cookies are definitely a good idea as well, but the quarters are too.

It's an idea...but I'd beg to differ with you as to a "great idea" because...

The college that my son goes to...he puts money down on a card that looks like a credit card and each time he does the laundry, he swipes the card through the washing machine and/or dryer and it deducts the amount off the card. So much better than making sure that he has enough quarters in his room to do his wash.

Letters...not teenage boys... emailing us at home is so much faster and cheaper. It would be too much bother to go buy stamps.. and address the envelope.. and write the letter.. and find a postal box.. and walk to the postal box...than to go onto hotmail.com and type a few words and press send or to pick up the phone and call home.

Transferring money into their account that they were not expecting or a surprise package from home with homemade cookies, etc. would be much more appreciated than a roll of quarters.

As for vending machines...he rarely uses them...we bought him boxes (one litre/4 cup size) of juice and as he opens them he places them in the mini fridge that we bought for him to have in his room. Much healthier than pop, which he rarely drinks.
