Hello,

We have a bonus issue of the Daily Thrifty Tips today. There were a lot of requests submitted yesterday so we wanted to make sure they got published before Monday.

Also, we got a call from a writer for the Hartford Courant who is writing an article about coupons and hopes to interview someone from Connecticut about their coupon use. If you are an avid coupon user, live in Connecticut and wouldn't mind answering some questions about coupons, contact us at the form below and we will forward your email address to the writer.

Baby Powder for Sandy Kids

We love to visit the beach in the summer and inevitably everyone gets covered in sand. My toddler hates the feeling of having the sand rubbed/brushed off his skin (especially if the sand is really wet and hard to get off). We've found a great way to remove it: baby powder! Just sprinkle baby powder on your feet and legs and the sand will come off so easily! Both our son and the car end up dry and sand-free.

Credit Cards with Rewards

Don't be fooled by a credit card company's claims that credit cards can help you save money. Finance charges quickly erase any benefits that credit cards offer in cash back incentives unless you pay your credit card off at the end of each month.

Opening Clams

Never open clams with a paring knife or other sharp instrument. You can cut yourself badly. It's best to use a flat knife made for opening clams or some flat kitchen knifes may do the trick. Use a thick towel, glove or pot holder to protect the hand that is holding the clam. Hold the flat knife in your other hand, pull the shell opening towards knife until it penetrates between the shells, then stop. Simply rotate the knife to pry open the shell. Fresh clams open easier when they are cold.

Softening Butter

You can soften butter quickly but putting it in the microwave for 10 seconds. If the butter is frozen, you may have to repeat this, but be careful not to microwave it for too long, it will quickly become liquid. If you have hard butter that you want to add to a something you are cooking, simply use a cheese grater, the grated butter will quickly melt.

Keep Track of Your Saving Progress

I like to keep track of all the money I was tempted to spend but didn't. I do the same when I am counting calories. I count what I almost ate but didn't.

Watch Those Wholesale Club Prices
By Kelly Ann Butterbaugh

While wholesale clubs (bargain bulk warehouses like Sam's Club, Costco and BJ's) can be full of savings, the shopper must be extra savvy while shopping in them.

Know Your Prices

The common misconception is that if it is sold in bulk in a warehouse setting it must be cheaper than shopping in a large chain grocery store. However, many of the items are actually more expensive in the bulk store. Do the math and calculate the price per piece at the bulk stores while comparing the items to your regular grocery prices.

Where's the Store Brand?

Most wholesale clubs aren't interested in offering generic or store brand products. This could mean higher prices if you're used to generic items at the grocery store. While the wholesale club could offer a great deal on a dozen cans of Green Giant peas, if you're used to purchasing the store brand you'll notice a higher price when buying wholesale.

No Coupons?

Many wholesale clubs do not accept manufacturer's coupons while most frugal shoppers don't hit the stores without them. If you only purchase Cheerios when you have a $1 off two coupon, that means the wholesale club needs to offer a double pack of Cheerios $1 less than the retail store to compete with the prices.

The Price of Joining the Crowd

While some wholesale clubs once offered memberships for $25, some have risen to $45 for a yearly membership. True, for many this cost is justified throughout the year in savings, but if you're a once is awhile shopper it's just not worth it. I recently consolidated my membership with my family. Three of us went in on the price of a membership ($45) and we make a family outing to the club together, allowing the person who holds the membership card to pay for the items in the end. Now I get to spend the afternoon with my family and save money; my two favorite things.

Do I really Want This?

Your last decision when deciding to join the club or not is to ask yourself, "Do I need this in bulk?" Many items have short lived shelf lives, and without proper storage and preservation you're forcing yourself to consume them quickly or waste your money. Focus on those items which store well or are consumed in high quantities. Watch out for bulk packs of cheese and luncheon meats that might be a great deal but won't be used before they expire. In essence, know what you need and what fits your budget and lifestyle.

No Bake Treats for a Bake Sale

Our church will be having a rummage sale and bake sale next weekend. It's too hot to turn on the oven. I'm needing ideas on No Bake treats or desserts I can fix, that won't require refrigeration (like pudding), afterwards. Nothing with chocolate, as it'll melt in the temperatures we're having now. Thanks for your help! (At our last bake sale (in May), I fixed mini cheesecakes, they didn't sell very well.)

Glenmont Red Floral Pattern #5804230

I hope somebody can help me. I renovated a bathroom 1 1/2 years ago and used a beautiful border called the glenmont red floral pattern #5804230. 2 Months ago in that same bathroom i had to install a shower unit and peeled back the border that is located at 1/2 wall to reuse it when the shower was completed and walls were painted. The painter accidently removed the border and discarded it. I have searched high and low. Only to find out it has been discontinued. This border can be viewed at usawallpaper.com. All I need is about 8 feet of this border. The homeowner is very sad. Can you please help me.

Thank you,
Dante Pierson from Westtown N.Y.

Fixing a Corningware 9 cup Stovetop Percolator

I have a Corningware 9 cup Stovetop Percolator AND I love it. The problem is that the seal around the metal rim is corroded, so when I pour a cup of coffee, some goes in and leaks out down the outside of the pot. I have left an e-mail with Corningware and posted a question on howtomendit.com. Does anyone know of a way to mend this without chemicals (like silicone sealant)? My DH would like my skin to not turn green!

I spent $4 and much time looking for this, so any amount of money and time is fine by me. I love it so much more than the coffee machine!

Bread and Butter Pudding Recipe

We spend a large amount of each year in South East Texas where we often eat 'Bread and Butter Pudding' this is unlike the British dessert of the same name and I would love a recipe for it. It is quite lemony, with a kind of custard and fruit in the bottom, the bread and butter bit is on the top. Can anyone help?
